Gloucestershire / CLEMO 1820's Brickwall
« on: Thursday 26 February 09 12:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have Matthias aka Matthew and Sophia CLEMO living in Gloucestershire in the late 1820's.  Their daughters were all born there according to various censuses. Mathias was a carpenter.

Ann CLEMO was born c 1825 in Gloucs
Sophia was born c1831 in Bristol, Gloucs
Margaret CLEMO was baptised 28 Dec 1835 in Cheltenham.

After this I have Ann and Sophia on the 1841 Census in Birmingham in Lodgings and no sign of Margaret. Margaret then pops up in 1851 in Birmingham but nothing is known of the parents again. All girls 3 marry and remain in Birmingham.

Does anyone recognise this family.  My cousin and I have been on their trail over 10 years and have searched for deaths, second marriages etc etc  in Gloucester Records office and on the internet. Most Clemos came from Corwall and we have unable to trace them there and have not found any other children although we would have expected some.

Aberdeenshire / LEWIS, jews, Aberdeen 1900s
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I posted this a long time ago and wondered if it was worth doing again as I've got nowhere since.

My Uncle Bernard LEWIS was apparently born in Aberdeen about 1903.  He moved to London in childhood and in fact we all thought he was born in London but his death cert says Aberdeen. On his marriage cert he says his father was Louis Lewis a tailor.

He had several older brothers one was called Hymie (James) his mother may have been called Rebecca. I can not trace any sign of this family on the 1901 or 1911 census in London and they are not on the 1901 in Scotland.

I understand that many jews changed their names so I have searched under Levi and Levy as well.

Does anyone have any knowlegde of this family?

Where do I go from here?

Travelling People / Nipton - first name
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
Someone was asking about a Nipton, can't remember where but maybe this will catch them.

I have found a Nipton John aged 14 months b Herefordshire, place illegible, parents William and Ann John in East Dean, Gloucestershire in 1861. He had several siblings William, David, Carnation(?), Drousilla, Martha.

More details if anyone claims him.

Norfolk / BOND Brick wall, ideas please
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping my cousin who lives abroad search for some of her family.

We have Edward Bennett BOND who said he was born at Mundesley about 1842 son of Robert Lightfoot BOND and Elizabeth EARL.  He was an Insurance Agent who eventually moved to Birmingham although he married Lavinia Clothier in Street Somerset in 1869.

The thing is Edward B BOND doesn't appear in any census until 1901 nor can we find any birth record for him.  His parent's info was gleaned from his marriage cert and then from earlier censuses.  He has several brothers who are all quite visible.  They were mostly Insurance Agents although their Father Robert was a Norwich City Missionary in 1841 then progresses to being at Erpingham Workhouse as Relieving Officer, then became Returning Offcier and Registrar.

There is a possible siting of Edward Bennet Bond in 1851 at a school with one brother but he was definitely not with his parents.

My cousin has no internet access and when she was in the UK she made extensive searches of Norfolk Parish records on Fiche and even paid researchers in Norfolk to look for info about him.

Bearing in mind he was quite likely to be Non-Conformist are there any other avenues we could persue?

Travelling People / HUGHES/DAVIS/DAVEY
« on: Friday 20 February 09 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Following from our discussion last week or so I sent for Joseph Hughes' birth cert and this is what came back:

24 Jan 1855 Joseph son of Robert HUGHES, basketmaker of Cotleigh (Devon) and Sarah HUGHES formerly DAVEY.
Registered in Honiton 27 Jan 1855.

I have always found refs to Sarah being a Davis or Davies before, never DAVEY so this is new info.

I can't find any other definite birth records for any of the siblings to compare this with. I wonder why they only registered this child?

Europe / ZUMACH Pommern, research tips please.
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 08:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have Richard Christian ZUMACH living in Dublin in 1851. I have often wondered where he came from and someone once suggested Pommern in Germany. There certainly seem to be a few Zummachs there on Ancestry.

I have never found anything definite about him and wondered the best way of finding out. Can anyone give me any pointers please?

Dublin / MIHILL/ZUMACH/WOODWARD mystery
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 08:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have had a brick wall for several years over this lot.

Emma Mary ZUMACH was born in 1848 apparently in Dublin.  Her father was Richard Christian ZUMACH and was a shipwright. She married James Henry MIHILL in He was in the Royal Engineers. They had 3 children Alfred, Edwin and Emma and another James who died in childhood.  James Henry MIHILL died about 1881 and Emma Mary then married George WOODWARD who was said to be a 'Baker in CJC' on his marriage certificate. They then had a son also George in 1883.

By 1887 the whole family (minus George Snr or so it would seem) moved to Birmingham UK where my Grandmother Alice Wood ward was born. Emma Mary died in 1899 Birmingham and was registered as MIHILL and Alice also used the name MIHILL in 1901 becoming WOODWARD again at her marriage in 1910.

I have never been able to find any of these:

1. A birth record for Emma Mary ZUMACH
2. A death record for James MIHILL
3. Any mention of George WOODWARD other then his marriage cert and his name on Alice Woodwards Birth cert.
4. What 'Baker in CJC' means

As for Richard Christian ZUMACH, he was on the Charts Head of Household list in 1850. I can't find him other then that. He also had a son exactly the same names ((typical!) and he married a Catherine SEALE and had several children - I can trace that family up to 1911 minus Richard Christian ZUMACH.

Does anyone have any ideas where to go from here? Short of a visit to Dublin which is fairly impossible I am totally stuck.

Travelling People / ROBERTS - Born in America??
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have Fed and Rebecca ROBERTS on the 1861 Census with their 2 children Mary Ann and Sarah in Minchinhampton. They were Hawkers or Gipsies.

In 1881 they were in Symondsbury, Dorset with 11 other children, two of which Mark and Brittania were born in America.  William was born in Devon in 1861, Mark in America in 1863, Brittania in America in 1865 then they were in Devon again by 1868 when Thomas was born.  All the rest were born in England. Their daughter Sarah appears to be travelling with them married to a James Cooper.

Mark Roberts' son also Mark went on to marry Patience Manley in 1919 and Brittania I think married Powers Manley, Patience's Uncle, about 1889 when she was 23.

Can anyone tell me why they would have gone to America, and for such a short time?

I am finally sorting out all these lines but very unknowing about  travellers as a whole.
