Hello (waves)

Do you have James Davis hawker aged 68 b Stroud Gloucs at 37 Hewitt St Hightown Manchester in 1911?

His wife was Eliza aged 61 married 37 years 5 children all still alive b Stroud as well.  Only other occupant was Elizabeth Thompson grandaughter aged 13

Wondered if these were Nellie's parents?  Some possible Nellies b Gloucs in 1911 but I expect you've seen all those.

Have you looked with the husbands family see if she was with them in 1911?

From a very icy village!

You might be related to this family then.

Was your grandfather James Manley born 1904 in Axminster?

If so, his father Powers Manley was married to Brittania Roberts.

The cert arrived early.  Thank you GRO for putting me out of my misery.

Robert Palmer was born 29 Jun 1879 son of Edward Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer formerly Bickham in West Buckland, Somerset.

Despite saying he was born in Pontypridd on every census.

Some of his siblings were born in Glamorgan but not him.  In fact when I researched his wider family last week I found several instances of births around Glamorgan between about 1860 and 1880 and it also appears Robert was working in Glamorgan at the time of his marriage in 1905.

So at last the very big family I have found really is his. My friend will be so chuffed. I'm going to print it all out and give it to him for Xmas!

Thanks Osprey, that is the conclusion I had tentatively reached but until I get the birth cert I wont know.  I have ordered it and it will be posted out on 14th so fingers crossed.

Meanwhile I'll wait on the death cert in case it isn't the right one.

Also I'm intrigued as to why Robert was living in Porth when he married in 1905.

It would be brill to get this sorted a bit for Xmas for my friend, he could use some cheerful news right now.

No I don't think it's an outside chance at all I think it may well be him.  They lived (and the family still lives) in Wellington and the surrounding area.

I have found a Palmer family with a widdowed mother with a  Robert and other children  born in Somerset but with another son William born in Glamorgan near Wellington on the 1891 census, this could well be your boy.

I'm going to order the cert to see.

Thanks for that. I had discounted that birth and forgotten about it.

Well the plot thickens.

I have searched FreeBMD and I can't find a birth for a Robert Palmer in Pontypridd between 1870 and 1890.

In the whole of Glamorgan there are only 3 Robert Palmers born in this period all in Swansea, in Mar 1883, Jun 1886 and Jun 1888.

I am begining to wonder therefore if his birth was registered as something else, in which case did his father die before he was born? Well  the only possible death was in Sep 1887 an Edward Palmer aged 48  in Cardiff. A trawl of the 1881 census again brings me back to Edward the innkeeper, the only Edward Palmer in 1881 of the right age to die aged 48, and  who probably was not Robert's  father.

So in that case was Robert born before his mother married Edward Palmer or was he illegitimate?

Running out of ideas here.

Shot in the dark!
1881 census
Edward Palmer, Visitor age 40 widower, Born Blaenavon, Occ |Innnkeeper out of employment.
Living in 1 Tram Road ( now known as the Broadway)
The Greyhound Pub, LLanwit Vaidre,( Pontypridd.)
Heddwch

Yes, I wondered about that one but  the same chap  (who was an innkeeper on previous censuses) didn't appear to have any children, then his wife died before Robert was born so obviously she wasn't his mother.

Oh I see Osprey found the same lot too! I wondered if Edward remarried but I can't seem to find him again after 1881.

I also can't find Robert in 1901, I wondered if by then he was in Somerset but he's not there either, seemingly.
