Flintshire / Davarn Dowill
« on: Friday 09 March 12 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find a John Hughes who was born in the Mold - Gwernaffield - Halkin area about 1799. I found one baptised in the Halkin area on 14 april 1799 to a Edward Hughes and his wife Elizabeth of Davarn Dowill. I presume this is a place in the Halkin area - has anyone heard of it, or where it is.

The birth looks promising as he had a son Edward and daughter Elizabeth.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / understanding dna results
« on: Tuesday 21 July 09 17:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I sent off a sample of dna for a 12 point check, to compare against other related surnames. I have now been told that I have a 100% match with someone.

Does this mean that somewhere in the past we definitely share a male ancestor?

Am I right in saying that anything less than a 100% match means that the two people have no common male ancestors?

John

Lancashire Lookup Requests / my gggggrandmother
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 07:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, trying to find what happened to my gggggrandmother.

She was born Priscilla Grier, in Liverpool in 1781 (ch St Nicholas 19/8/1781) - her father John Grier was a mariner.

In march 1801 she married an american sea captain John Davall (or Duvall, it sometimes changes) at St Peter, Liverpool (6/3/1801). She signed her name on the record (does this mean she was quite well educated for the time?).

In july 1801 she was widowed, when John was killed in Savannah, USA (a cannon blew up when they were celebrating july 4). She was pregnant.

In december 1801 she had a son John Greer Duvall. She lived at Bridgewater St, Liverpool. Her son grew up to be a mariner. He married, and the family stayed in Liverpool, but nothing about Priscilla. The name Priscilla crops up in later generations of the family, so she was remembered.

After that I can only find two references to her:-

Gores 1805 - Mrs P Daval - boarding house, 13 Bridgewater St.

Gores 1807 - Priscilla Daval - victualler, 14 Bridgewater St.

So I am looking to find what happened after that. Any suggestions (or facts - second weddings or a death?) would be much appreciated.

Thanks, John

Lancashire / Duvall family in 1851 census
« on: Thursday 09 October 08 14:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I can't find this Duvall family in the 1851, wondering if anyone can come up with something. They are from Liverpool both before and after. The details I have are -

John Greer Duvall is a mariner (b1801), who married Mary Ann Templeton (b1799) in the 1820's (can't find marriage, but assume in Liverpool).
They have 3 sons - John in 1826 (address Brownlow Hill), William in 1829 (address Pembroke Place) and James in about 1831 (can't find baptism record).

I have them in the 1841 (from findmypast, but not in ancestry(?)) at Finch Street North Buildings (can't find this on a map) as -
Mary Ann Duvall (36), John (14), William Henry (12), James (9), Charlotte Templeton (79, Mary's mother), Eliza Plat (17). Presume father John was at sea. Charlotte dies in 1843. No idea who Eliza Plat was.

In 1847, son John married (address given as Deanormi (?) St - I think it was between Brownlow Hill and Parliament St).

In 1856, son William married (address given as Minshull St (blurred)- still in Brownlow Hill area)

I think father John dies 1856-1861, as in the 1861 census they are at 97 Howe St, Everton
Mary Ann Duvall (59, widow), plain sewer
James Duvall (30, unmarried), sailor
also in the same house is son William (32, tailor), Sarah (31, wife), Charlotte (eight), John Green (6, son), Sarah (4) and William H (1mth).

Further census' have them in the Everton / Kirkdale / Walton area.

Hope someone can find them in 1851. Thanks, John

The Lighter Side / early census
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 17:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have used the 1841-1901 census records for tracing families, but have no idea how they were taken. Looking at the parish records for marriages, a fair number of people were not able to write (or read?), so did a man go from door to door and ask relevent questions -
who is the head, how old, where born, and who else lives here?

Could this explain why so many wrong entries, depending on him understanding the various dialects, and also if he had a hangover from the night before?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Formby parish records- early 1800's
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 15:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Wondering if anyone has access to Formby parish records?

I have a ggggrandfather (William Mulvey) who, in the 1851 census, says he and his wife Ellen were both born Formby. He was age 45 and a shipwright, wife Ellen was 44, in 1851 and they lived in Sparling Street, Liverpool.

What I am looking for is a birth / christening for William Mulvey in about 1805-7 and a marriage to an Ellen (don't know her maiden name) in about 1824-7 (their first child was born 1827). Don't know which parish, but I am pretty sure they were CofE.

If you can help, it would be much appreciated.

Best wishes, John

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Holy Trinity, Chester baptism 1806
« on: Saturday 24 May 08 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I think my ggggrandfather William Mulvey was baptised at Holy Trinity, Chester on 6/4/1806 (from familysearch site). I would love a look-up of the parish records, to confirm his father was William Mulvey, shipbuilder, and any other info available from the record.

Also any info on his sister (Elizabeth Mulvey) baptised there 1/4/1804 if poss.

Many thanks, John

edit - he was born 25/2/1806 and baptised 6/4/1806

The Common Room / latin translation?
« on: Wednesday 30 April 08 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I got a copy of a RC christening record (1905) from the Liverpool records office, which has some latin added by someone(?) beneath the address of the parents. Hoping someone can give a translation for me.

Some info - The baby's father had died before the birth, his name was Thomas King and he married a Mary Curry in 1950. Although why this was on his christening record, I've no idea.

It says (may contain mistakes due to my not knowing latin) -

"Ipse die 13 Maii 1950 Qual(i think) couteaxit cum Maria Angela Curry in Zec B.M.V. de Mt Carmelo apud Liverpolium: Winifred Curry et hiabel upham V.OR"

Also, what is the "Matrina fuit"?

Thanks, John

Lancashire / occupation

Hi
Can anyone decipher this occupation from the 1841. In another place I have him as a 'fringe card maker'.
Thanks
