Bedfordshire / Help reading 1891 Leighton Buzz. workhouse census please
« on: Thursday 26 July 07 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Could someone with better eyesight than I have - and maybe a better magnifying glass too!! - please have a look at the following entry in the 1891 census :

Elizabeth Ann Lancaster
Age 36  born abt 1855  Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England
Inmate at Leighton Buzzard Workhouse

She is listed with her children Edith, Harold and Elsie.

In the end column (Deaf and Dumb etc) - there is a word that I cannot read at all - the same word is in the second entry (William Adams).

Many thanks

Hilary

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / Leighton Buzzard Workhouse COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 26 July 07 11:16 BST (UK)  »
I've just found my Gt-Grandmother Elizabeth Lancaster in the Leighton Buzzard workhouse in the 1891 census, along with three of her children (two of whom - twins - must be illegitimate as they are only 2mths old and her husband died four years earlier!). The two elder children Christopher and Rose Lilian, have left home (Christopher to London and Rose to her Uncle Levi in Leighton Buzzard). They were a Quaker family and I wondered whether this was why Elizabeth, in disgrace, was in the workhouse - could she have been disowned by the family? She already had an illegitimate son, (Harry Johnson - who I cannot find after 1881....)  when she married Charles....

What sort of records are available for workhouse inmates and I how do I get at them?!  ???

Also, is there any way of getting info about the Quakers in 19th century Leighton Buzzard?

Many thanks for any help.

Bedfordshire / Robert (Lankenster) LANCASTER before 1841
« on: Monday 16 July 07 17:04 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help me find info about Robert LANCASTER or LANKENSTER.  I have him in all censuses from 1841 (aged abt 55)  and his death in 1872 aged abt 83. He was husband of Charlotte, father of Levi (and others) and - I think - son of Martha  who is on the 1841 census aged 80.  He was a "Plait dealer" - (straw). I would like to find anything about him before 1841. Any hints please?  Many thanks.

Help please!  I can find Charles Lancaster (son of Levi, husband of Elizabeth, father of Christopher) born abt 1847 in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire in the censuses up to and including 1881. Cannot find him, or his wife, in the 1891 or 1901. Have tried various spellings of the surname, but no luck! Many thanks for any help. ???

Quaker Family History / Quaker families in Hammersmith - PERRYER
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 15:14 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any info concerning the PERRYER (PERYER) family who were Quakers in Hammersmith. Michael was the caretaker of the Friends Meeting House in the 1891 census. His daughter (then aged 2), Margaret, born in 1888 or 1889,  died in Fulham in 1975, was my Grandmother. She married Christopher LANCASTER in 1911 in the Meeting House. Christopher was Mayor of Fulham in 1936.
Many thanks!

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / LANCASTERS of Leighton Buzzard COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 14:18 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone else looking into the family of Levi Lancaster (son of Robert), born abt 1829 in Leighton Buzzard, died 1908 in Aylesbury, married Hannah in 1847?  Family of straw plaiters and then shoe menders. His grandson Christopher (who had twelve children) was my Grandfather and I have a lot of info to share!

Also - Levi's address in the 1871 census (thank you John!!) is Lower America - does this road (?) still exist? Where did the name come from?

Many thanks!
