Meath / Oldcastle - Meath
« on: Monday 25 April 11 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a Mr Ross who I believe was a schoolmaster at Old Castle in the early 1700's.

I am also looking for Isaac Henthorn and his wife Mabel and sons James born 1706  and John.

There appears to be no trace of them being born there.  but Isaac and Mabel married in 1696 in the Kilmore area of Ireland.

Can anyone assist please.

St Anthony's  in Scotland Road, has a very active Family History Group.

Why not write to the Group at the Church and see what they can do for you.

The Old Courts were still around in the 1950's as were the wash-houses.  a good book to read about those times is "The Life and Times of Kitty Wilkinson.

I like to find my information from the libraries and records offices,  It is easy to obtain stuff which has been posted into databases without any check ups on the validity of that information, so making it necessary to double check it anyway unless you want to possibly end up down a blind alley.

As a professional researcher  (not genealogy I may add) but in the legal field I find it  a useful tool when doing my own genealogy research.

Some people like to gather everything on offer, that is their choice but I do my work quite differently, from very early childhood I was taken to reference libraries and to bookshops and other venues containing books.   My great uncle was a book-dealer and taught me much that I feel grateful to him to this day.

If I went to a chatroom I would not expect to be pounced on as I have been and asked what names are you researching at which point ,you get a deluge of information which is no relation to the lines you are working on.  People think they are being helpful, when all the while the person who has entered is looking for some friendly chat to get used to how the room works.

I have been in trouble when a very old gentlement came into the room and  said "I don't suppose anyone knows anything about Roman and Celtic History, and I said I did ,  this old chap was 90 years of age but , others didn't want it. So I left and ended up doing the  work with the person in Instant Messages. at least that way he got to know what he desperately wanted to know about.

There are many ways of sharing knowledge, but they are not always appreciated.

The reference to people being "plebs" is offensive and unwarranted.  here is the definition of Pleb.    "English pleb is a back-formation; a derogatory term for someone thought of as inferior, common or ignorant"  so anyone different are considered  a "pleb" are they?

People do not go to the chatroom for various reasons.  I for one do not need nor want look-ups  which seems to be the main usage of the rooms.  Asking for look-ups is not doing genealogy it is collecting data.

I like to talk about historical facts, local history within the pre 1974 Lancashire boundaries is my main area .  Ancient & Roman History are also of great interest as is archaelogy and much more, none of which comes within any discussions that I ever found.    I do talks on the subjects and consider  I have a lot to offer but it does not come within the chatroom ethics as far as I can see, so I stay away.

As Earlestown is part of St Helens Borough, the records should be at the Lancashire Records Office in Preston.

The records of Marriages for St John C of E church 1879 - 1930 have been published by The St Helens Townships Group on DVD and also the Newton le Willows (adjacent to Earlestown) St Peter's C of E Church from 1845 - 1930

You would need to purchase this as look-ups are not allowed the disks are copyrighted.
