World War Two / COMPLETE SS Empire Bison bombed 1940
« on: Friday 06 February 09 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a letter describing the bombing of the SS Empire Bison at about 0600 on Sunday, 8 Sep 1940.  The ship was three days into a voyage from Liverpool to Baltimore (about 11 days total).  The bomber attacked the ship with machine gun fire, cannon fire and dropped about seven bombs, which luckily missed, but the strafing destroyed the steering and damaged the crew quarters and the captain's bathroom.  The letter does not describe the bomber so I have no idea of its type nor do I know the position of the attack.

Does anybody know of German (Luftwaffe) records that may record this action and if so what do I need to do to access them.

Technical Help / smalldots.gif
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 21:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I just ordered some downloads from the National Archives.  At the bottom of their acknowledgment email there is an attachment smalldots.gif.  Does anybody know what this is for.  I downloaded and opened it and just got a blank Window Internet Explorer page (not my default browser). I tried to view it in my default browser (Google Chrome) and got a blank browser page.

Easily confused and puzzled ???

Norfolk / Military Hospital Dereham 1915
« on: Sunday 28 December 08 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to trace a WW1 hospital where William Herbert Harland was treated for his wounds after 20 April 1915.  A family story places it in the Dereham area and suggests that it had the surgical capability to undertake amputations (WHH managed to escape this).  I have put a post on the WW1 board but Ady suggests that I might also put something here

The WW1 post is

World War One / Military Hospital Dereham
« on: Sunday 28 December 08 11:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

William Herbert Harland, born 1893 in Redcar, was wounded in France between 20 April 1915,when he entered France and 29 April 1915 when he was evacuated home (England).  I have a copy of his medal card and also the original of his character on discharge.  He enlisted in the DLI on 13 Sep 1914 (No 2619 Pte) and was discharged from the Labour Corps (No 219128 Pte) on 31 Aug 1917.  Unfortunately his service record seems to be among the missing and I have not yet managed to trace his unit in the DLI but also I have not yet looked up the medal roll entries and SWB list entry at Kew.

A family story is that his mother went to see him in hospital in or near Dereham, Norfolk, shortly after his evacuation and was asked to authorize the amputation of an almost useless arm.  She is supposed to have refused on the grounds that a useless arm is better than no arm.  I have been unable to find anything about a military hospital in the Dereham area other than a reference to crosses from an ash tree in "the Old Vicarage, which was a military hospital in the first world war." I shall be very grateful if anybody can point me to more data on military hospitals in the Dereham area and if they know where the hospital records are I shall be over the moon.

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry hints
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 20:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Ancestry.co.uk seems to have been revising its programmes quite a bit lately - there are some new pages to navigate before one reaches one's family tree.  On the tree there are hundreds of little leaves each signifying an ancestry hint.  In the past these have mostly been references to American citizens with the same name as the member of my English family but quite unconnected in time and geography.  It was no great chore to plough through them and delete them - and now and again a hint would turn up that looked relevent and required further research.  However, now almost every member on the tree has a little leaf attached but curiously when I click on it I am taken (slowly) to a hints screen that then tells me
Quote
You currently have no hints for Albert James Jackson

Just because we have no more hints to offer doesn't mean there aren't more hints available. We focus our hints on only those records we feel are the highest probable matches. However, Ancestry has billions of records indexed and ready to add to your tree, each of which can add rich details that help tell your family story.

Can anyone tell me why this useless service is provided and is there anything that can be done to stop it?

Scotland / Peter Couper - cause of death
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I hope that this is the right board for help with reading a death record and perhaps a simple medical explanation.

My ancestor, Peter Couper, an agricultural labourer/forester, died in Abbotshall, Fife, in 1881.  The illustration below reproduces the cause of death information and I would be grateful for some others interpretation of what this is and also if any medically experienced rootschatter would care to explain it.

Fife / Complete - Can any one read the last word
« on: Friday 11 April 08 14:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

This is an extract from the Strathmiglo baptism records of 1840.  It records the birth of Janet Dunn.  I can read everything except the last word and shall be very grateful for help and suggestions.

Thank you

Canada Lookup Request / Death - Lily Darling, 1960ish
« on: Tuesday 05 February 08 10:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find the date and location of the death of Lily Darling somewhere in Canada about 1960.  She was a widow, born Lily Hasted Harland in Middlesbrough, England 1900.  The family story is that she had pulled into a filling station and stopped at the pumps but did not get out of the car and was found to be dead when the attendants investigated.  If anyone can point me in the right direction to discover more about this or even look up the Canadian death records I shall be very grateful.

Northumberland Completed Look up Requests / Completed - Possible Whitley Bay wedding
« on: Monday 03 December 07 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have been trying to sort out the date and location of a wedding photograph that I thought was taken in Redcar or Middlesbrough.  With the help of the Rootschatters I think the date is 1950s to 1960s in which case it might have been a wedding in Whitley Bay (1954).  I shall be very grateful if anyone with knowledge of Whitley Bay could look and see if they recognize the location of the photo on
