Hi, I've found your thread so insteresting.

My 3 x G Grandmother was widowed twice.  She then took up farming, with no live in laborers or servants.  In the last two census she had increased her acres of land and was farming 20 acres at the age of 77.  She died 9 years later, so I'm unsure how long she continued to farm.

I suspect that it was a tied farm.  I have been to see the farm and it is now a an out building used for storage, linked to a much a bigger newer farm but you can tell it was once a very small old farm house.

I've found very little on the net about independent women farmers.

Good luck with your search.

Hi, I don't know if you have already done this but I googled 'enoch shelton' and the first hit is a family tree that looks like yours.

Also you could try the wishfull thinking site at Genuki and have a look for memorial inscriptions.  I have visited Cheddleton Churchyard and know that there were a lot of Sheltons buried there.

Good luck

Hi Arthington, just a thought but try Newton Heath Cricket Club.

I know it's a bit off North Manchester but I'm sure I remember one of my rellies playing on there in the North Manchester League at one time.

You never know?????

There are plenty of people out there with thousands of names in their tree....perhaps some are name catchers and perhaps some have been enjoying their hobby for 50 years +

My Mum isn't in the best of health and I wanted to print out our family tree.  It took the OH and myself a whole day and a LOT of floor space to put the thing together.  I have approx 500 names but it was hard work and we got through loads of of tape  :D

When Mum wants to look at it she now unravels it bit by bit starting from her bedroom onto the the landing, through to the loo and a bit in the spare room  ;D

This is very kind of you and I would love to take you up on your offer  :)

Where would you like me to post the details, on this thread or via PM?

Many thanks again

Kooky,  I have just looked at your lovely photo and felt a niggling of recognition but I can't think where from ...so I'll have a ponder.  My first thoughts were Whitefield Town Hall but now I don't think it is.

Perhaps it was a registry office marriage?

I'll ask 'me old fella' who was born in Whitefield which borders Prestwich and see if he can shed any light  ;)
