The Common Room / Workhouse survey documents now online
« on: Friday 07 September 07 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Just read an article in todays paper (Daily Mail) regarding Victorian Workhouses and accounts recorded by the children there. The article says that the interviews are now avalable for the first time on online. They were taken across the country in 1840.

the address is www.originsnetwork.com

Haven't checked it out myself yet but looks interesting

:DNow that I've had a lay down in a darkened room for a few hours I can now embrace my addiction and realise that there is no cure and even if there was I would not be interested, I'm having too much fun.

Hi,

Thanks for everyones help, I think he must have been born before they were married, not the first time (or the last) this happened in my family, but where its happened before they have used their fathers name.

Thanks for that,

Whats confusing the issue is that there is a Frederick Holden born 1849/1850 in Steyning to Thomas and Harriet and up until recently I thought that must be him, however on the census reports (apart from one I think) Frederick is down as being born in London Pimlico. The only birth that I have been able to find is the Frederick in Steyning, so maybe I should get that certificate to be sure but I think that must be the one with Thomas and Harriet as Parents not Harvey and Sarah but I suppose theres only one sure way to find out.

Sussex / HUMPHREY/HOLDEN Surname change any ideas?
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 14:35 BST (UK)  »

Hi,

I've been trying to find the family of my gg grandfather Frederick HOLDEN born 1850.
I recently received his marriage certificate to Mary Puttick in 1870 in Storrington Sussex. I was very surprised as his fathers name is Harvey HUMPHREY.
Anyway I've done a bit of digging and have found Frederick and his father Harvey and Mother Sarah on the 1851 census, after a bit more digging I have found that Sarahs maiden name was HOLDEN.

Sarah and Harvey are listed on the 1871 census with the rest of their children all as Humphrey and Sarahs mother.
The decendants of Frederick and Mary were all HOLDENS but really they should be Humphreys?

Any ideas as to why my  gg grandfather would take his mothers Maiden name when his father is still alive and living with his mother after Frederick was married?

Any ideas/suggestions greatfully received

Thanks

Hello,

Mines all in a Asda Carrier bag!, haven't been doing it very long but I will need another carrier bag soon, perhaps I'll go up market and use a sainsburys bag next, Then again maybe I should get properly organised with folders and things, I think my ancesters properly deserve better!
