Berkshire Completed Look ups / Completed - Broadmoor records
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 11:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have just seen on this BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/berkshire/content/articles/2008/11/20/broadmoor_feature.shtml

that the "Victorian archives of the (in)famous Broadmoor Hospital have been released for inspection by the public at the Museum of Reading."

Would it be possible for anyone to look at the records for me?

Ernest William Vernon Hitchins, admitted Feb 1888, died there Nov 1900

Many thanks,
Barbara

Please could anyone with access to Thurlby by Newark PRs check for the baptism of Elizabeth WOOD, born 1824 - father Richard Wood, labourer (according to her marriage certificate)

IGI has a baptism 25th April 1824 giving parents as Richard & Mary Wood, I'm hoping there may be more information in the actual PR

I have found Elizabeth in 1851 census Sculcoates HO107/2361 fol.377 p.17 before her marriage in Hull to James Predgen in Nov 1851, and think I have also found her in 1841 Haddington, Lincolnshire HO107/619/23 Folio 3 Page 36  as a servant in the same household as a William WOOD farmer and family - in 1851 William had a visitor Richard WOOD widower(edit - married) - hoping this may be Elizabeth's father.

The informant on Elizabeth's death cert was a Jane WOOD, possibly her sister, I found this Jane in 1861 census at the same address in Hull as given on the death cert, and in 1851 census Haddington HO107/2104 fol.136 p.25, she was also born Thurlby and IGI has a baptism 3 Aug 1828 giving the same parents Richard & Mary WOOD

IGI also has baptisms at South Hykeham for both William and Richard WOOD on 15 Aug 1808, parents John WOOD and Susannah - if anyone has access to those PRs I would love to know if there is any more information

Any help very much appreciated

Predgen name frequently mistranscribed, but can't find him in any census, can anyone else?

Thanks for looking, Barbara

In 1861 census (RG9/3541 fol.46 p.14) a relative was boarding at a school in Stutton Grove, Stutton-with-Hazelwood, near Tadcaster.    There was a schoolmaster, seven assistant teachers, 6 domestic staff, and 98 scholars, all boys, so it must have been quite large.

Does anyone know what kind of school it was?

Thanks for looking,
Barbara  :)

Just trying to fill in some background information about my gtgrandfather. He was born Lincs 1837, was in Yorkshire 1861 occupation railway labourer, 1864 married in Lewisham, occupation excavator, and when his 1st child was born 1864 Islington, gt.grandfather's occupation was railway excavator.

Can anyone tell me which railway was being built in abt. 1864 in the Islington area?

Finally found my great-uncle's birth cert 1864.  On all census his birthplace is stated as Holloway or Upper Holloway.  On his birth cert the address is Alexander Terrace, the registration district is Islington, sub district Islington East.  I did an address search for Alexander Terrace in 1871 census and found it in Islington, can't find it in the 1861 census.

Can anyone tell me why census state Holloway and not Islington for his birthplace?  Is Holloway a separate district or part of Islington?
