Ive just been sorting out some old notebooks and found this reference to Ocean arrivals 1919-24, but headed "Sask"  probably meaning the person was headed for Saskatchewan,  but ive no idea where i found these references. Probably relating to the surname BANKS.

Mikan (?) no 161349    Microform t-14591, page 2262
t-14851, page 99,  24 March 1928 SS Melita

Australia / Charles J DOLPHIN: Battle of Jutland
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 20:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am involved with a research project in Portsmouth UK about the 1916 Battle of Jutland casualties and "my ship" has been HMS Black Prince.  One of the men was a Charles James DOLPHIN, born supposedly in Portsmouth but he is listed on the Australian Commemorative Roll as well as Portsmouth Naval Memorial,
His mother Martha Florence is listed on UK War Graves Roll as Relative Notified of his death, with an address given as St Heliers, Barton Road, Artamon, North Sydney. The family were living in Portsmouth in 1901 & 1911 censuses.

We are researching the families of some of the 6000+ casualties and the impact it had on them and Portsmouth for an exhibition next year.  I would like to try and find out why Charles should be listed in Australia - was he in fact an Australian citizen?- and why his mother was apparently in Sydney by 1916.  Any information about either Charles, his mother and maybe the family would be appreciated!   There was a young sister Nellie Florence born 1902 and their father was Charles Alfred who was also in RN.  Was the family in Sydney or just Martha??  what may have happened to them?
Thankyou so much!
Richard

Durham Lookup Requests / Hurworth /Haughton leSkerne Baptism, c 1793_BANKS
« on: Friday 18 October 13 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello I am looking for a Joseph BANKS,  born/bap Hurworth  c1793.   Parents possibly John & Mary CUNDELL.
There is a Joseph buried in churchyard died 1846 aged 63 and wife Jane, d 1877.
There is also a Joseph listed as butcher in 1829 Pigots directory.
At the moment we think Joseph may be a sibling of Fanny, b1788, John b1790,  Thomas b1791,  Elizabeth b1793 - last 2 bap Hurworth, but parents John & Mary from Haughton.
Not sure if Fanny & John were born Hurworth, but would like to find any confirmation for them & if Joseph is a sibling or part of wider BANKS family.
Thomas is my 3x grt grandfather.   Many in the Banks family down the generations were butchers.
Thankyou!

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Inns & Breweries
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 20:08 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor and family was a tenant innkeeper at Black Bull in Great Smeaton for 50 years from mid 1800s.   He was also the village butcher and had stables as well as a slaughterhouse!
As the village was on the Great North Road i presume it was a coaching stop for drinks and overnight stays?
What breweries supplied the inns in this part of North Yorks?  Would they have only had one brewery supplier in those days?  Or were inns the same as todays free houses?!
Thanks for any local / social history info on Yorkshire hostelries!

Durham / Hurworth local history
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 19:47 BST (UK)  »
I have found a village website for Hurworth but its photos are modern ones.
Would like to find any historical ones from late 1800s early 1900s!

Are there any local history sources, (topographical, trades directories)  for late 1700s early 1800s?  what were its main occupations? Mining? Agriculture?
My ancestor John BANKS (b c.1753)  came from there and many family descendants were butchers from early 1800s in villages just inside Nth Yorks.   Is it likely John himself was a butcher?!

Thanks
Richard

Canada / Nevis, Alberta / BANKS marriage
« on: Tuesday 09 April 13 23:46 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking any info on Nevis residents in 1912/13 and a possible Alberta marriage - I have a great uncle Richard Nightingale BANKS who arrived in St John from Liverpool in March 1912, and described as farmer on the pax list. He was followed in June by Nellie YEOWARD, a widow, and her 2 children Dudley & Brenda - on their pax list they were apparently headed for Nevis, Alberta "going to join son, farmer".  Nellie had an older son  Eric born 1894 who could already have been in Nevis.    Nellie & Richard were to return to UK by mid 1913 as their own son was born in Warrington Cheshire in June, with Nellie's name as BANKS not YEOWARD on the birth certificate.
This would seem to indicate a marriage but nothing is listed in the UK. They are on the Isle of Man  1911 census together.
Therefore i am trying to answer 2 queries:
1) Did they actually go to Nevis area?  From maps i see it is a tiny hamlet. Any info about it appreciated!
2) How do i find out if they married in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada?
Richard was to return to Canada in 1923 (Immigration Form 30A)  and died in LA in 1933, but only a "wife in UK" on death cert.   Nellie was living in Cheshire in 1930s as BANKS.

many thanks for any help about these questions!
Richard

Canada / Marriage 1912/13 - where to look?!
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking a possible marriage for a Nellie YEOWARD and Richard Nightingale BANKS after June 1912 up till mid 1913, but have no idea how to look for a Candian marriage.!

Richard sailed for Canada 22 March 1912 on Empress of Britain, (Can Pac) Liverpool to St John, NB.
Nellie sailed June 6th 1912 on Lake Manitoba, (Can Pac) Liverpool to Quebec/Montreal.  Nellie ("Mrs N YEOWARD") had 2 children with her, Dudley (master D, age 15) and Brenda  (Miss B, age 10)
They had returned to UK by mid 1913 as Nellie gave birth to a son Nigel,  by Richard, in June in Sankey, Warrington, Lancashire on June 19th - Richard being informant and Nellie as mother with BANKS surname.  Nellie's maiden name was CRABTREE and YEOWARD was her first marriage but was a widow in 1912/13.

We have been unable to find them on inbound to UK passenger lists.  At first we thought that they had never got married and just referred to themselves as married, but this birth certificate seems to indicate that they did so. There seems to be no marriage listed in UK indexes, so the question is, did they get married in Canada?   How are Canadian marriages listed,  in provinces rather than a national index?
Can anyone help shed light on where/how to look?
Richard returned to Canada in 1923, & Form 30A  states he left a wife in Isle of Man. His death in LA in 1933 also says he was married but no name is given.

Many thanks
Richard

Australia / YEOWARD - Melbourne & Adelaide
« on: Monday 11 February 13 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking information about /contact with family & descendants of Dudley Urmson YEOWARD (b 1896 Isle of Man) ) & Eric YEOWARD (b1894, IOM)   Dudley died in Melbourne 1954 and son Dudley Robert married in Adelaide 1949;   Peter Dudley Y,  son of Eric married in 1940s in Canberra or Adelaide.
Particularly looking for what happened to their mother Nellie (nee Crabtree) who  lived in Cheshire, after IOM, till late 1930s  - her husband John died 1908, then she had a son Nigel by Richard Nightingale BANKS in 1913. Richard is my great uncle and we know she followed Richard to Canada in 1912 with Dudley & his sister Brenda,  but they all returned to UK before son Nigel was born. Richard then disappeared back to Canada in 1923 and died in LA in 1933.

Nellie & Nigel were at my grandfathers funeral in 1937 in Stockport, Cheshire and mentioned in his obituary as sister-in-law & nephew,  but we never knew of this family or our grandmothers brother Richard till a few years ago!

We would love to know what happened to Nellie - did she keep in contact with her children in Australia, or did she die in Australia?  I have seen a posting on Rootschat (I think) from a Yeoward grand daughter but cannot find it again!

Many thanks
Richard
