United States of America / Los Angeles 1930s
« on: Saturday 10 November 12 09:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have just received a death certificate from LA County for my great uncle  , died 1933 and the address given is 1022 South Hill St.

I have done a Google maps search and the marker seems to be on a parking lot and a factory, so it looks like the original buildings have now gone and area re developed, presuming the google marker is accurate!  can anyone in LA give an idea about that part of LA, or where i could seek out any old maps which would give an idea of the area in the 1930s?

Also, the certificate indicates there was an inquiry and autopsy and though it was probably just routine because he was a foreign (English) national and a short illness.   Is it likely / unlikely that medical records such as these no longer exist, or would they be archived as it was State records? But i probably wouldnt learn anything extra from what is on the death cert.!

many thanks for any info & tips!
Richard

United States of America / 1930s US death certificates
« on: Wednesday 31 October 12 00:10 GMT (UK)  »
It may seem an obvious question, but Please could someone give me an idea what is on a 1930s death certificate, namely California?

Are they a bit different from state to state?  I read somewhere it may have where the person was buried?  I am hoping that the address might help identify a possible cemetery site!  But after looking up LA cemeteries i think i will have my work cutout!!

I am awaiting the arrival of one from LA County in 1933 - being sent to a friend in DC before he can email it to me in UK (saves overseas charges!)  but the storm has delayed things -  How long does it usually take mail to travel from coast to coast?!

Though  I know its been despatched from LA early last week, I have to be patient now, my thoughts and prayers are for  the disaster relief first and foremost.

thanks for any hints and tips!
Richard

United States of America / LA death 1933 - details sought
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 17:07 BST (UK)  »
I have just been sent a newspaper notice (Ramsey Courier, Isle of Man)  of the death of my great uncle in LA in 1933 and would like help to try and find any death notice/obituary in any LA newspaper, or death registration?

His name was Richard Nightingale BANKS,  died January 20th 1933.   No age mentioned but he was born 1886 so should be about 47 yrs old.
His wife was in Cheshire England at the time, apparently 10 years older, but they had lived in the Isle of Man, UK.

He apparently lived in San Francisco for some years prior to LA.
Apart from trying to track his death & burial,  are the US censuses available for 1920s?  He emigrated from UK to Canada 1923 (Canadian Immigration Form 30A) so must have entered US from Canada sometime.
Any help or guidance appreciated!

Cheshire / BANKS/Stockport obituary & newspaper etiquette!
« on: Tuesday 09 October 12 20:02 BST (UK)  »
I have an obituary notice from Stockport Advertiser of 1937 for my grandfather and in it is mentioned his "sister in law Mrs BANKS & nephew Mr  N Banks".  I have been unable to find out any first names for them as husband Richard Nightingale BANKS doesnt appear to be with them and had gone to Canada in 1923. (his father, also RNB, had died in 1922)

My main question is would i be correct in presuming that an obituary in those days would only list adults and not children - so someone listed as MR would be of full age - if the nephew was younger than 21 would they be listed as Master or even not at all? In which case that would be a clue as to when to look for a birth of N Banks pre 1916.!

While Richard had a distinctive middle name of Nightingale i have been unable to find a marriage either. and while i have listed all marriages and births from 1910-40s i cant buy loads of certificates, and even so they could have married in Canada. We dont know if wife and son were separated from Richard or simply visiting from Canada.

Thanks for any advice!

Durham / ORD / Place name mystery!
« on: Friday 05 October 12 20:10 BST (UK)  »
I am reserching ORD families in Durham/Sunderland & Hartlepool and have a George ORD born in 1861-65 on various censuses.   On 1891 he is with his family in Monkwearmouth age 28 and listed as born in Stockton.
In 1901 he is aged 40 and born in Yorks Branchend.
In 1911 aged 46 born Branch end, Yorks.

I  havent been able to trace his exact birth because i dont know where this "Branch end" could be - can anyone help?   ???
There is a George in 1871 census of about  the right age but born Brandon, Durham, so may not be him.
The registration districts for Durham, as in FreeBMD, are somewhat confusing to locate possible births for him and also his son William in 1880, (also apparently born Stockton)  which i havent been able to prove is the same William in 1901 census and marriage in 1905 in Hartlepool but with similar occupations!

Where could this Branch end Yorks,  be?
any help with this place  or with William b c1880 will be much appreciated!

Isle of Man / BANKS - Maughold. 1922/3
« on: Monday 05 September 11 23:35 BST (UK)  »
Searching for info about BANKS family apparently living at Maughold in 1922/3.
My great uncle Richard Nightingale BANKS (born 1885 Manchester) sailed for Canada from Liverpool in 1923 and on his Form 30A Canadian Immigration form he listed his wife as living at Maughold, Ramsey, IOM, but no name. His occupation is listed as farmer / harvester, intending on settling in Canada, and headed for Winnipeg. He is also the informant on his fathers death certificate in 1922 in Stockport, Cheshire.
Unfortunately we do not know his wifes name, but she and her/their son are in a list of mourners at my grandfathers funeral in Stockport, in 1937 as "Mrs Banks, sister-in-law & N Banks, nephew". We have found no trace of the marriage or birth in the England BMD indexes, but the marriage must have taken place between 1911 and 1923.as Richard is the Canadian 1911 census as single, but he had returned to UK by 1912/3. We also dont know if she followed him to Canada after 1923.
I have looked up Manx BMD and no indication of a marriage, but are there other sources which may yield any clues to him or his wife around 1922/3 ?
Any help or advice appreciated!!
Many thanks!

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / 1950s Electoral Registers - Matlock?
« on: Thursday 30 September 10 00:19 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know whether the electoral registers for approx 1958-60 are held at Matlock? and if they live nearby and have easy access, would they please be able to look up the following address:
Old Brook House, Combs, Chapel-en-le-frith

Needing to find out who lived there as my sister and i often visited the house as children as it had some connection to our gran Mary (Molly) GRIFFITH. (nee BANKS) but not sure if it was a relative or friend.  (We still have a missing brother of hers in our research)

Possible name of resident may be BELLAMY.  but would like to find out exactly who was there at the time.  It then had an old Romany caravan in the garden!
Thanks for any help whatsoever! Im down in Hampshire so too far to travel!!

Lincolnshire / NE Lincs history
« on: Wednesday 14 May 08 01:14 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone recommend any history books or articles which give some idea of life in NE Lincs in medieval times?!
My wifes ancestors farmed and lived in Fulstow, South Somercotes, Skidbrook (they were also churchwardens there)   and Theddlethorpe.  from 1592 - late 1700s family name of WALKERLEY in the parish registers and in wills etc.   Must have been pretty bleak in those days.

Is there any record of the population numbers that far back?  I have the Cassini Maps mid 1800s edition which shows there was very little in the way of houses etc. What would they have subsisted on then?   Were there manor houses for those villages?

Hoping someone can can help with this sort of local history knowledge!
Thanks
Richard
