Hi tootsiepie
I know my family of that time were roman catholic, I think st johns in port glasgow would have been church used by catholicis of that time do you think if I contacted the church they may have bdm's registers as far back as this?  I have heard of church records but ive been unsure as to how you would contact church about access of them!!

Hi robeena
just looking over ur replys there, I think maybe some research in to what you were suggesting about the lodgers theory, I did notice my family on 1861 census as having lodgers but never thought a lot of it  thank you for this helpful insight and will start some research on it as soon as I can manage.

Ireland / Re: Marriage - John COLLINS & Catherine FAULKNER
« on: Tuesday 11 September 07 20:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi Aghadowey
thanks for taking the time to reply.  On birth cert of a daughter they had born in port glasgow, it states they were married nov 17 1854 ireland.  Good point about asking of their religion, i've always assumed they were roman catholic but I am not 100% sure on that assumption.

Lanarkshire / Re: help drowning
« on: Monday 10 September 07 03:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I dont know if you have the info you need, but I can add this wee bit of info for yourself or anyone that finds it useful.  My ancestor had drowned also while fishing one night, I managed to get his death cert and noticed some writing in the margin beside his entry, I couldn't quite make out what it said so I contacted New Register House in Edinburgh and was given the name and contact details of a lady at new register house in edinburgh that deals with deaths of this kind.  If there is a death like a drowning or similar it, has to be established if it is accidental or otherwise, so they have a inquest of the death. If you want details of the inquest you can contact the following:
                       Roslyn Roberson
                       Extract Services, New Register House
                       Edinburgh EH1 3YT

        or email: roslyn-robertson[AT]groscotland.gsi.gov.uk

She is a lovely lady who is very helpful with info relating to this.
