Just would like to add my appreciation for an excellent resource which unlike some appears to have struck the right balance in many areas.

The following are extracts fom the FAQ section of the Copyright Office's web site ......  :D needless to say copyright rests purely with that body and any organisation nominated by them

Copyright Office: Changes to UK Copyright Law
A joint note from the British Library and The Copyright Licensing Agency Ltd ("CLA")

Frequently Asked Questions

1. General
1.1: What is changing in copyright law?

A number of changes were made to UK copyright law, taking effect from 31 October 2003. One of the most important was that copying for commerical purposes is no longer allowed under the existing exceptions whereby limited amounts may be copied without the consent of the copyright holder, providing the copies are for research or private study. For copying for non-commercial purposes, rules such as the amount that can be copied, the requirement for it to be fair dealing or the need to sign a declaration, are unchanged.

3.2: The following examples would certainly be viewed as copying which does not have a commercial purpose

    * R&D in educational establishments which is not related to any commercial venture
    * Individuals' own private research or study, unrelated to any commercial venture
    * Research on a genuinely pro bono basis

The Common Room / Re: Who do you think you are ? Vic Reeves
« on: Thursday 16 December 04 00:05 GMT (UK)  »
Although not a Reeves and Mortimer fan I did like this episode ... perhaps because of the chord it struck in my own research as my mother has finally confirmed  that she has known for 40 years what I have suspected for only a few that her father was a bigamist.
...... bang goes a lot of research  :(

Now I know why a lot of "minor" points just weren't adding up.

As regards the show I believe that this one may have been better as the first episode  given that it actually showed some research being done (blink and you missed it) ..... however my wife's comments echo those above as she found the series boring and kept asking "why do they only do the grandparents every time?"

The shows could have been so much better but in an article the authors of the book were quite critical of most of the celebs. Clarkson was singled out for his constantly derisory remarks about his ancestors (off screen) and many of the others had absolutely no interest in carrying out any actual research.

Will there be another series .........  does anyone care ?  :-X

Occupation Interests / Re: Waggoner/Carter/Coachman?
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
Waggoner and Carter are I believe almost interchangeable although it is possible that the waggoner was responsible for larger loads and therefore of a higher grade or rank in the farm hierarchy.

A coachman is I believe generally the description of the coach driver for the estate / land  owners. Often the better drivers were chosen for the posts. ... unless it was a post for one of the commercial concerns which provided coaches between areas (akin to a modern day bus driver) .... In either case they were good at their jobs and (most) could handle horses very well.

If this was an Anglican minister try looking at http://www.lambethpalacelibrary.org/holdings/Guides/clergyman.html which has some guides on tracing anglican ministers
