Northumberland Lookup Requests / Tyne & Wear Archive, St Philip Neri, COLLINS
« on: Friday 26 November 10 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
St Philip Neri was in Co. Durham (Dunston), I can't see their records in DRO catalogue but they 'are' on microfilm at TWAS so am asking in here if that's okay.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ajt/

That should take you to a list of baptisms for COLLINS  on the Family Search beta site.

The ones I am interested in are those with James (Jacobi) Collins and Mary Ann (nee Sinclair) as parents. I only have the father, James, in the 1911 census, staying in the house of his oldest daughter Ann and her husband. Mother, Mary Ann, and the rest of the family nowhere to be found in 1911 as yet, which means I do not have the numbers of children for this marriage born/died by 1911.

The dates are odd for some of them
Ann - breg Q3 1889, bap 29 Sep 1889 - which, as catholic back then I would expect, children were baptised as soon as possible after birth.

The others seem to have been a while for most of them before they were baptised, which was not usual.

I think they had Ann, had her baptised, then maybe James drifted from the church ( Mary Ann was C of E).

They had Francis (c1892), John (c1893), Grace Agnes (birth reg Q1 1896,)and James (c 1897) and didn't have them baptised.

Then Grace was baptised around the time of her death (bap 06 Sep 1899, death reg Q3 1899). Perhaps her death sharpened James' view and when the next baby, William, came along he was baptised quite soon after birth ( birth reg Q4 1900 , bap 23 Dec 1900).

I imagine the priest chased them to get the other children baptised, as there is a job lot on 03 Mar 1901

Francis (Franciscus)

James (Jacobus)

Charles (Carolus) - for whom I can't find a likely birth reg, not seen a mention of a Charles in any census entry for this family.

and a child for whom no first name or gender seems to have been recorded

I have no idea who this last one may have been, but if I can suss it and they survived, it will give me another search term to hopefully be able to find Mary Ann and the rest of the family in 1911.

If anyone is at the archives and has ten mins to spare, please could you check the entries for 03 Mar 1901 and see if there is any indication of birth dates for these four in the original registers, that may have been missed from the transcription? Long shot I know, but I am at the stage where long shots are my only option.

Any other advice, straws to be clutched at etc gratefully received too :-)
Thanks

Thanks both for your help and the information.
I am still trying to trace the border crossing records for when this family travelled from Canada ( where they had been for some years) If I find them I will look out for the naturalisation certificate numbers.

Hi Boo!I was just about to" clean the gleen"(glean)oops! of my original post, and here you are with more info.Awesome!!With respect to "certs",my oldest brother and sister were born in England during the war,can I order copies of there birth certificates? They've been landed immigrants without papers their entire lives.I'm thinking it would make an awesome Christmas gift.

Yes you will be able to get copies of their birth certificates.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

That is the GRO online ordering site, not sure how long it takes or what it costs to post overseas  - when I lived in Canada I got them sent to a friend in the UK who scanned them and mailed them to me. I collected a large envelope full when I came home after two years!

We aren't allowed to post details of living people in here though, so if you need some assistance to find the correct references to apply for the certs you are welcome to send me a personal message (click that little green scroll icon below my name). But its late here so I won't see it till tomorrow. :-)

Nearest I can see that would fit with the scenario you gave
National Archive Reference:
RG number: RG13      Piece: 4750      Folio:  93      Page:  25

11, South Bell Street, Gateshead
Durham

GOUCH, Ann   Head   Widow    F   53   1848
Blaydon Durham
SEED, John   Relative   Single    M   28   1873   General Labourer
Hartlepool Durham
WOOD, Ellen   Adopted Daughter   Single    F   3   1898
Spen Durham
FAWELL, Mary   Boarder   Widow    F   83   1818
N Castle Northumberland

Again, you would need confirmation of her birth year to be more sure.

Hello Mike, I see that www.freeBMD shows the marriage for your ancestors: June Qtr 1922 in Bethnal Green district: John A. Wood and May Fowell.  That marriage cert would give you Father's names of the bride and groom, among other things.

Hi, sorry to butt in, I checked the birth registration for  Lily E Fowell (Jun qtr 1924) and that says (as did the original post) that the 'mother's maiden name' was Wood.  So am not sure if that marriage registration is the correct one?

I didn't find a marriage registration in Free BMD for James Fowell and Ellen Wood, so I looked at the data on ancestry.
There is a marriage  Q4 1920 , Bingham Registration District, Nottinghamshire vol 7b page 1215 ( I checked the image and that is correct)  for a James W Fowell and an Ellen M T Wood which looks quite possible.
Free Bmd graphs show that 1920 marriages are far from completed yet, I am sure the transcribers as going as fast as they can though :-)

I did check the 1901 census, there are 4 Ellen Woods in the Gateshead area, none of whom were recorded with middle initial of M or M T. Without some indication of her age its difficult to know which, if any, of them she was. Information from a marriage cert would help, that would give her age and her father's name.

United States of America / 1930 US Census - Naturalisation Codes
« on: Saturday 20 November 10 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have a record of a family in Maine, 1930 US Federal Census. The family had travelled from Shetland, stayed in Canada for a while and then ended up in Maine.

In col 23 ( Naturalisation) I have a variety of codes Na (naturalised) Al (Alien) Pa (first papers)

I am guessing that:
Na means the person had applied for and been granted US Citizenship ( or at least the right to stay in the country)
Pa means they have started the process of application but its not yet complete
Al means they have not applied for citizenship

I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me if my assumptions are correct. If they are, at that time would there have been any conditions to the length of residency for those with a status of Al ?

Thanks

Do you have access to the ww1 service records on ancestry? I have just looked at Robert Reardon's service record (he had two service numbers so check them both) Its very odd that when the family filled out the form listing living blood relatives so that the army could dispatch the memorial scroll to them, the space for his father's name was left blank.
That could mean that Thomas was not alive then, or it could mean that he had left the family, I don't know.
That form was signed by John Reardon and witnessed by the local catholic priest, it was dated Sep 1919.

I assume you have confirmation of Rose Ann's maiden name of Harvey? - birth cert for one of her children for instance.
Do you know anything else about Rose prior to her marriage? If you know her father's name, you could email Sunderland registrars and ask if they would check the register for you to see if her father's name ( and occupation if you know it) matches for that marriage in 1867. Sometimes registrars will help if you ask them about specifics (though obviously wont tell you anything new or do involved searches),  its always worth a shot at asking them.

That looks like the baptism of Peter, which bears out that the family on the 1871 census were Catholic and puts the surname back to Jones again :-)

https://beta.familysearch.org/s/recordDetails/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fpilot.familysearch.org%2Frecords%2Ftrk%3A%2Ffsrs%2Frr_941695252%2Fp1&hash=HloWXpZgU9zB10k5M56iYku8TUc%253D

That baptism is for James (Jacobus in Latin)  now they are Reardon again.

and another catholic baptism in Thornley for a Robert.

Margaret Ann in 1882

John in 1887

There may be others on the family search beta site. To find those I looked in England Baptisms, advanced search, put in surnames for either Jones or Reardon, left the child's first name blank, put in a year range from when they married, location Durham, England and parents first names as Thomas and Rose.
