Lancashire / Re: Place name - near Heywood

Hi, and Thank You everybody. I'm stunned by the amount of effort you put in!
A bit more background. I don't have the book myself, but we had a look at a transcription by one of the big societies, - I can't remember exactly, but I can check. It was one of the well known societies - I think quite a new addition - of the Parish Church in Heywood. St Luke's, I think.
My aunt had noticed the reference first, and I immediately thought, "Oh, Base born", but she was right, it was written where we would expect a place name to be.
It appeared in quite a number of entries, as she was trailing a family name through, and we looked on all sorts of maps, books, etc. I decided it must be an old, defunct name, or somewhere now under a reservoir or something. We have our share, but it seemed abnormally regular to refer to illegitimate births, too, especially without comment from the rector!!
That was before I knew about Rootschat. Can't think how we missed you!!
(Actually we were looking at Diggle(s). Ours are definitely Pendleton, Salford, and we have quite a lot on them, mostly frommiddle to late 19C, but we know they originate in the Heywood/Bury/Rochdale area. We just didn't know how many there were!)
Thank you all again.
Best wishes.
Emms.
