Lancashire / Re: Place name - near Heywood

Hi, and Thank You  everybody.  I'm stunned by the amount of effort you put in!

A bit more background.  I don't have the book myself, but we had a look at a transcription by one of the big societies, - I can't remember exactly, but I can check.  It was one of the well known societies - I think quite a new addition - of the Parish Church in Heywood.  St Luke's, I think.

My aunt had noticed the reference first, and I immediately thought, "Oh, Base born", but she was right, it was written where we would expect a place name to be.

It appeared in quite a number of entries, as she was trailing a family name through, and we looked on all sorts of maps, books, etc.  I decided it must be an old, defunct name, or somewhere now under a reservoir or something.  We have our share, but it seemed abnormally regular to refer to illegitimate births, too, especially without comment from the rector!!

That was before I knew about Rootschat.  Can't think how we missed you!!

(Actually we were looking at Diggle(s).  Ours are definitely Pendleton, Salford, and we have quite a lot on them, mostly frommiddle to late 19C, but we know they originate in the Heywood/Bury/Rochdale area.  We just didn't know how many there were!)

Thank you all again.

Best wishes.

Emms.

Lancashire / Place name - near Heywood

I wonder if anyone with detailed local knowledge can help us.  We've used transcripts for Heywood area Church registers with reference to a "Base".  We know there can be references to "Base born" or illegitimate children, but from where it was in the publication, it seemed to mean a place name.  We've searched all sorts of places without finding a "Base".  The best I could come up with was an Abbreviation for "Besses O'th Barn", but there was no list with such an abbreviation.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for your attention.

Cumberland / Re: Cockermouth Businesses

Hi Gillian

I hope I get this right.  It's my first post.

I've been in the Local Studies Library in Carlisle this morning and I looked in a couple of old Trade Directories.  I didn't have long, so there may be others and I will look again either there or in the Archives.

It looks as if the Robinsons were busy people!

I found:

  Robinson P & Co,

builders, contractors, cabinet makers, house furnishers, painters & decorators & undertakers,

The Mayo Furnishing Warehouse, 64 Main Street, Cockermouth.

Also

Robinson, Rt & Thos Tanners (sheepskin), St Helens tannery

Eobinson, Ada Jane (Mrs), game dealer, Market Place.

Robinson Isaac , grazier, Croft Terrace

Robinson, William, agriculturaal implement manufacturer, South Street.

Then in Kelly's Cumberland and Westmorland 1925 I found:

Robinson P & Co,
Joiners, funeral furnishers, cabinet makers, house furnishers, painters, decorators

and undertakers,

The Mayo Warehouse, 64 Main Street, Cockermouth.

T N 32.

Also
Robinson, Isaac, grazier, 5 Croft Terrace.

Robinson, John, Horse slaughterer, St Helen's Street

Robinson Wm, Agrictl impl mfr South St T N 79.

I think that means he had a telephone by 1925, too.

I don't know if the others are yours, but no doubt you will.

Position:

I looked at the number for a shop I know and it is odd.  Yours is even, so it is on the same side of the street as the river part way down.

Also, if you let your eyes focusm the right way, on your photograoh, you can see the reflection in the window, which shows trees and country and also, a substantial looking building, so it's a position where you could see beyond the street.

Between the locals and my next visit, I will work it out and try and get a modern photo.

I hope this is useful.  I love looking at local old buisinesses anyway.

Best wishes.

Emms.

Sorry it's quite long with no formatting, but I haven't sorted that out yet!
