Chris,
I have a postcard of the funeral of the Maharajah of Cooch Behar in Bexhill-on-Sea on Sep 21st 1911.  I guess that postcards served different purposes in years gone by compared to their purposes nowadays.

Interestingly, there is an International Cemetery Postcard Museum (http://www.savinggraves.org/projects/postcards/).

Mike,
The Free BMD Index lists the following birth:

George Edward Hodges; b Sep Q 1855; Brighton District; 2b, 170

There is the following entry in the 1861 census:

RG9/598 Folio 36 Page 25

18 Frederick St, Brighton

William Hodges; Head; age 28; Porter; b Walworth, Surrey
Charlotte Hodges; Wife; age 25; b Brighton, Sussex
George E Hodges; Son; age 5; b Brighton, Sussex
Charlotte Hodges; Daughter; age 11 months; b Brighton, Sussex
Thomas H Petty; Lodger; age 21; Porter; b Hamsterley, Durham

In 1871, Charlotte Hodges (age 11) is a scholar in Stapleton, Gloucester

In 1881, Charlotte Hodges (age 21) is living in Esher, Surrey with Thomas Hodges (age 74; widow; Pensioner of Police)

Based on the occupation of Thomas Hodges who you have located in the 1881 census, I would have to conclude that Edward Hodges (b abt 1855 in Brighton) was also known as George Edward Hodges.  It would also seem that Edward Hodges (b abt 1833) may be the same person as William Hodges (b 1833).

Sussex Lookup Requests / Sellens Marriages in Ticehurst
« on: Monday 27 August 07 03:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
This may not be that easy, but has anybody come across reference to the following marriages in parish records in the Salehurst area:

Thomas Sellens and Mary Bright (Mar Q 1849 in Ticehurst District)
Sarah Sellens and William Rummery (Dec Q 1872 in Ticehurst District)

The reason that I ask is that the BVRI (vol 2) lists the marraiges as being

Thomas Sellens and Mary Bright (1 Feb 1849 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire)
Sarah Sellens and William Rummery (23 Oct 1872 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire)

The BVRI cites a FHL film 1040810

It looks like there is an error in the BVRI.  I have tried to search the LDS website and can't find any entries for this film.

Can anybody help confirm that this branch of the Sellens family did get married in Sussex and didn't go to Herts to get married.

Regards

Mark

Hi,
Thanks for the information.  I have some slightly different information.  My records show that Eliza Darrcoch's parents were Donald George Angus Darroch and Eliza Scott.  Donald Darroch was the brother of Duncan Darroch who married Susan Parker.  Below is the record of the Bodles emigration to New Zealand along with Eliza's mother, Eliza.

Name BODLEY,
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: July 31 1878 Notes Title: Mrs
Name BODLEY,
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: July 31 1878
Notes Title: Child 3 children. with G.D & Mrs BODLEY
Name BODLEY, G D
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: July 31 1878
Name DARROCH, E M
Vessel CITY OF NEW YORK: Arrived:Auckland July 31 1878
Notes Title: Mrs

Vessel: CITY OF NEW YORK Captain's name: W. B. Cobb Port of departure: San Francisco Date of arrival: 31 July 1878 Port of arrival: Auckland Vessel type: Steamship Tonnage: 3020 Notes: Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Source: New Zealand herald, 1 June 1878

Although there are many other Darrochs in New Zealand, I can't find evidence of Susan Darroch emigrating there, nor can I find records of Louisa Haines.

Hi,
I haven't thought about George Edward Bodle for quite a while now.  I am most definately interested in learning more about him.  It has been difficult to be able to link him to the other Bodles of Alfriston, Sussex.

The information that I have been able to glean from the records and from information from two of his descendants include:

He was born in about 1844 in Sydney, Australia to George Bodle and Anne Butler.  George Sr was in the military.

George Edward's siblings were born in Ireland and one drowned in India.

Anne Butler died in Ireland and George Sr moved back to England.

George Edward Bodle married Eliza Janetta Darroch.  Eliza was born in India in about 1845.  In 1861 she was living in Hampshire, England and married George Edward Bodle in Kensington District, London in 1870.

They lived in Middlesex in 1871 (when their daughter Annie was born) and in Devon in 1873 when their son George Angus Bodle was born.  George Angus died in New Zealand in 1878.  He fell into ship's hatch during voyage to New Zealand and died 6 months later.

The Bodles had travelled to New Zealand via the USA.   I am not certain as to why they took that route

They did have relatives in the US (the Ingrams), some of whom did end up in New Zealand.  The story of the Ingrams, Darrochs and Scotts is a long and convoluted one that unfortunately I don't have time for at the moment.

As for Louisa Haines, I cannot find any record of her travelling with the Bodles to New Zealand.  There are census records of a Louisa Haines living in Brighton with her parents (George and Emily) in 1861.  In 1871 she is in Gloucestershire working as a servant (as is one of her sisters).  In 1881 she is in Paddington, London working as a nurse.

Hi,
Can somebody confirm that there is a memorial plaque to Insp John Bodle, BSAP inside St Andrew's church in Alfriston.  If so, does it give any dates?

Richard,
This seems to be a different John Sellens.  The John Sellens that you have listed was (I believe) the son of John Sellens and Sarah Golden.  John Sellens married Mary Holman in 1814 in East Hoathly.  They sold their property in 1828 to Robert Colgate and emigrated to the US in 1830 (as you noted).  The property in East Hoathly may be the property known as Sellens Cottages.  John and Mary lived in Clay, New York where she died in 1844.  I visited their house and some of their descendants a few years ago.  John followed some of his children to Iowa where he died in 1875.  He is buried on "Edson Merrill's lot."  Edson was his son-in-law.

Hi,
Can anybody shed any light on the following family?

In the 1880 US census there is an entry for a John Sellens in Portage, Michigan.  He is listed as the father-in-law of
William W Brownell (b abt 1815 in Vermont).  William's wife was Mary Brownell (b abt 1831 in England).  John Sellens was born in about 1803 in England.
In the "Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan and Van Buren Counties" it states that William W Brownell was married, Aug 30, 1842 to Miss Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Baker) Sellens, natives of England.  The mother died in Warren County, Pa., while the father who came West, passed his last days at the residence of the subject.  She was the eldest of the two children born to her parents, her natal day and birthplace being November 16, 1825; Sussex England.

I can find John Sellens (Sellins) in PA in 1850 but can’t find him in England or the US in 1840/1841.

The Sussex Marriage Index does not list a marriage between John Sellens and Elizabeth Baker.  However, it does list the following marriage:

Mountfield, Mar 21 1821.  John Sellens and Elizabeth Wimble (wid of Fairlight)

The previous marriage of Elizabeth Wimble can be found in the SMI

Fairlight, East Sussex, 22 Oct 1808:
John WIMBLE and Elizabeth BAKER

So, who was this John Sellens?  Possible candidates are

John Sellens, chr 19 Jul 1801; Son of John Sellens and Sarah Golden
John Sellens; b abt 1801 in Mountfield; Son of Thomas Sellens and Elizabeth Noakes
John Sellings; chr 17 Apr 1803 in Burwash; Son of John Sellings and Mary

Can anybody shed any light on to this topic?

Technical Help / Re: splitting my rellies with legacy 6
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 00:04 BST (UK)  »
Jo,
There are a couple of different ways of doing this.  The first was described above.  Step by step instructions for this are as follows:

Navigate to the individual that you want to use as the starting point for the export:
From the Pull Down menus, Select: File > Export to > Gedcom file
Click Record Selection
Click selected "records contained in focus group" followed by "view/select focus groups".
Click "clear list"
Click on the appropriate button at the bottom (e.g. individual and descendants)
Select "descendants" or "entire descendant line" as appropriate
Click "OK"
Click "Close"
Click "select file name and start export"
Select a file name and location to save file to
Click "OK" and the export is complete.

The other way is to use advanced tagging to select the group of people that you want to export.

Click "name list"
Click "Options" then "advanced tagging"
Select the tag number on which you want to make the changes
Click the appropriate button (e.g. descendants)
Having tagged the appropriate people you can remove the tags from certain individuals if you wish.

From the Pull Down menus, Select: File > Export to > Gedcom file
Click Record Selection
Click selected "records contained in focus group" followed by "all records with an individual tag of" and select the appropriate tag number.
Click "Close"
Click "select file name and start export"
Select a file name and location to save file to
Click "OK" and the export is complete.

This should work.

Regards

Mark
