Hello,
I can only help by noting that my g grandfather of the same area, an Ag. Lab. worked and lived at different villiages in the various census records, and his children were born at different places as well.
Tracking his moves:
married 1866 Registry office Hexham (lived at Lincoln Hill Humshaugh Hexham)
ch. son 1866 Simonburn
ch. son 1869 St. John Lee
ch. son 1870 Charlton, Bellingham
1871 census Clarewood, Halton Hexham
ch son 1872 Hexham
ch. dr. 1879 Simonburn
1881 Leemailing Bellingham
1891 Wall, Hexham Union
1900 death Lanehead Bellingham (age 60)

I don't know how they were hired, but seem to have moved around quite a bit.

Devon / Re: Devon Middle Names Traditions
« on: Monday 22 February 10 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
My Devon ancestors all had middle names, at least the group that came to Canada.
The children born here in the 1850-70's all interchanged their names which made it difficult on census records as one year they would be Simon T, the next Thomas S. Cockwell.
My Grandmother had the name Elizabeth Tyra Cockwell, a rather unusual name for the 1870's.
This family also had a branch in Devon which used 'Orange' as a first name for their girls. I was able to trace it back to the early 1700's.
Does anyone know of the name 'Orange' being used in their family.
I wonder if the origin has something to do with William of Orange? Perhaps they were followers?

« on: Thursday 11 February 10 04:48 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for your help,
Yes the 1851 census in my Harriett Yorke.
I didn't look as far as 1891/1901 when I couldn't find them in 1861/71.
These may indeed be mine, I will do some more checking.

« on: Thursday 11 February 10 02:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have found the marriage of  a couple I believe to be related but am having trouble finding them on any census!
Does anyone have any new ideas?

The marriage record is from St. Pancras Church paris of St. Pancras Middlesex
1857 Nov 23
John Lake  full (age) bachelor glass maker of Link? Randolph St, father Thomas Lake, silversmith
Married
Harriett Yorke (not sure what it says under 'age', but not full) spinster, Aldenhamm? St.
father Joseph Yorke dead

My Harriett Yorke was born 1840 in Sussex, her father was Joseph Yorke. so this could be her...
I haven't been able to find John or Harriett Lake on the 1861/71 census.
Thanks for your help

Hello,
You can check the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census' online at
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/
If she was born White and that was the surname of her father.... you might find it with a lot of looking. Ella might be short for Eleanor or a number of other names as well.
You can check early births indexes in British Columbia to 1903
http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm#indexes
Manitoba to 1909
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
Saskatchewan to 1909
https://www.isc.ca/VitalStatistics/Genealogy/vsgs_srch.aspx
New Brunswick to 1913 or so
http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/Govrecs/VISSE/default.aspx?culture=en-CA
Nova Scotia to 1877 or 1907
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
Ontario can be checked through Ancestry, if you can access the world or Canada editiion. I don't have access to those.
I am not sure about the online availability of records or indexes from Alberta, Quebec,  , PEI, Newfoundland or the territories.
The Archives of Canada have attestation papers online for WW1
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php
I checked the archives search engine and came up with this:
Surname: White
Given Name: Ella
Age: 4
Sex: F
Nationality: Ir
Date of Arrival: 1928/12/16 (YYYY/MM/DD)
Port of Arrival: Halifax
Ship: Calgaric, White Star
Reference: RG76 - IMMIGRATION, series C-1-b
Volume: 1928 volume 15
Page Number: 25
Microfilm reel: T-14817
Note: Due to the poor legibility of the original indexes, some information in this database may be incorrect and/or incomplete.
Source: FINDI76-693650

Which may or may not be yours. The age is wrong, but  - see note above.
Perhaps she travelled to Canada in 1928?
Not a lot to go on, but you might find her somewhere, If only you could find her father's name! Have you not been able to find a marriage record?
Let me know if you find anything!
