In 1901 your Gt grandfather is living with his large family in Sedgehill not far from his birth place of Semley. On the assumption (something a genealogist should never do) that he remained in Wiltshire I looked through the deaths of John Smiths in Wiltshire during 1927 28 and 29.
I came up with only one that fits the bill in 1929 (4) in Devizes  5a 88  John Smith Age 68 .
Maybe you would like to take a chance and send for the certificate.
