Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Can anyone help my friend in need?
« on: Tuesday 22 July 08 19:40 BST (UK)  »
It's happened to all of us as soon as someone finds out that you are into genealogy they ask the question...Can you do mine?
Well I've started to help my friend but I am completely, utterly stuck. Can any of you RC geniuses help me please?
Thomas Eliston/Elliston born 1853, Hook Surrey.
Married Mary Ann Fox 1884.
His father was also Thomas Eliston born abt 1823 Moriton? according to Ancestry. Which is also Surrey. He married a Sarah? I have no idea what her name was as I just cannot find a marriage. She was born in Cobham Surrey about 1828. I have never heard of Moriton or Cobham so may be a transcription error but I really have no idea of the place names in Surrey.
I have searched for the Eliston family on the IGI but with no luck. :( ???
Everyone on here is so good at finding things that others seem unable to.
Can someone help me please? :)

Occupation Interests / Spinette
« on: Friday 18 July 08 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what a spinette is.
I have just received some papers from a researcher I hired in Belgium and the occupation of spinette has come up.
I assume it's something to do with spinning. Was it simply a woman who span? ??? ???
Thanks

The Common Room / Lookup offer Find My Past
« on: Sunday 29 June 08 10:03 BST (UK)  »
I have a few units left on FindMyPast which expire today so I would like to use them up.
There are only 24 so not a lot but I would rather use them to help others than see them go to waste.
EG...Passenger list transcript is 5 units but the full info would be 30 units so I would only be able to look up the basics but just enough info for a start.
I will be out from 11 to about 2 today but if anyone needs a look up please ask.

The Common Room / Mr Coverdale
« on: Sunday 29 June 08 08:37 BST (UK)  »
This is a real long shot ....
Mr Coverdale, no idea what his name was, ran The Grove childrens home (cottage home) Bromsgrove Worcs  in the 1930s to about the late 50s. He kept personal records on the children in his care.
As no records seem to exist for the home this is my, almost, last attempt at finding information. We all say that don't we but never give up. ::)
Did anyone stay at the home? Does anyone remember Mr Coverdale?
Or maybe he was a relation.
I said it was a real long shot but we all live in hope.  :'(
Many thanks

The Common Room / Completely stumped can anyone help please.
« on: Monday 23 June 08 20:32 BST (UK)  »
This is a bit long winded and if you don't fall asleep before the end I appreciate any help and suggestions.
My gran had 2 husbands / basically she didn't marry either of them/ and it has taken me years to find my grandad. She had several children including my mum.
She left /or he left/ my grandad and had more children and they all ended up in children's homes.
This is my problem.....
My cousin has a different grandfather to me and we just cannot find him anywhere.
All she knows is that he was born in Yorkshire in abt 1886. My gran left him to go back to my grandad and he died having to put his children into care as he knew he was dying.
I have told my cousin I want to help her but I am just clueless.
I need some suggestions.
So.... His name was Arthur Hancock and all his death certificate says is that he was 67 and from Yorkshire. He died in 1953.
My cousin has been told that he was a dispatch rider in WW1 but that is it. Is this a lost cause  or can anyone suggest what to do next. :(
I have been tracing my family tree for 20 years but this has got me completely stumped. ???
Many Thanks

The Common Room / BMD Place Names
« on: Friday 20 June 08 11:08 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a birth by process of elimination. It's a very common name but I know the county they were born in.
One entry for the name has Stoke T as the place of birth.
Any idea where that is?
I thought Stoke on Trent maybe.
Thanks

World War One / From engineer to flying corp
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 11:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out a bit about my husbands great grandad.
He was in the royal engineers up until at least 1915. I have his company and reg number. Then he joined the flying corp as an air mechanic. His medals are in the possession of another relative and his number for the F C is on them.
I cannot find any details for him anywhere. No medal roll or service records seem to exist.  Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough although I have tried very hard.
I can understand there may not be any service records but there must be a record of his medals.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of a good web site for researching the Royal Engineers and the Flying Corp.
Many thanks.

Technical Help / Why can't I email this tree?
« on: Friday 06 June 08 10:44 BST (UK)  »
I was trying to find out some information for a fellow roots chatter when I came across a family tree on Ancestry containing the same ancestors.
I emailed the link to the tree but this person couldn't open it. So I downloaded the tree and sent it to him. First in document form then a gedcom file but still he can't access it.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong.  ???
I have emailed it to my sons address and it was fine.
I'm stumped.
