Completed Census Requests / spares family/ Williams death
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 20:31 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find a death for a William Spares.
I can't find him on the 1841 census but his wife is a widow by 1851.
Ancestry returns nothing, in fact the family are missing from a few census [ should that be censii].
In 1851 the family,
wife Hannah aged 35
daug Agnes 16
son Herbert 12
son Nicholas 6
are all living Worcester St Paul's [folio 599 page 27] transcribed as Spores.
Any help much needed.
Thanks

Sorry mods
I posted this then realised it should be under census help :-[

Gloucestershire / Blockley silk mills
« on: Sunday 15 March 09 20:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have tried to find a book or even a website that may have some information about my ancestors but with no luck.
I know that Westmacott Mill is now called Blockley Court, and I think converted into flats, but that's it. Westmacott Mill was the largest silk mill in Blockley so I would assume that I could find something but no luck.
I've been to Blockley and couldn't find the mill ??? although plenty of ancestors in the church yard.
Can someone tell me if there is a book out there about the silk mills.
Thank You

The Common Room / 1826 Marriage question
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
If neither the bride or groom came from a certain village how long did they have to reside there before you could be married in the local church?
Sorry if this has been covered before.
Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Smarted up my soldiers please
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 07:48 GMT (UK)  »
This is not the original but a scan I received yesterday.
Is there any chance that it can be improved upon? I'm not hoping for a miracle but if someone could improve it even slightly I would be most grateful.
I hope it comes out OK.
Thanks in advance.

World War One / How much are WW1 medals worth.
« on: Friday 06 March 09 09:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am not trying to sell any but I've had the most amazing news.
Someone has all of my grandfathers war medals, Victory,Star and Service. I would like to try and buy them back if he will let me but I don't want to pay too much even though I am desperate to own them.
A little over the odds would be fine.
Any medal experts have any advice.

I am trying to find out what the newspaper for Bishops Itchington was in around 1915. I was going to contact Warwick records office as I have found them very helpful in the past and I assume if there are any on microfilm that is where they will be. I can't find anything on their website though.
So before I phone them, if there is anyone with local knowledge or anyone who has researched the village can you help please.
Thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / 1911 transcriptions
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 18:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have reported a lot of transcription errors to the web site and today had some replies.
They have said that they believe they are correct. ;D
So if you are looking for an ancestor in Sedgeberrow try typing in Surlgeberrow and if your great uncle was Jack try Vach as an alternative. Oh almost forgot Cropthorne is Crowthorpe, but hey, I must be wrong. ;D ;D ;D

The Common Room / Stupid question but....
« on: Friday 09 January 09 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
Would there be anything to gain from putting people at an address when they are living elsewhere?
I am referring to the 1911 census ( in other words they are in 2 places at once)
Thanks
