The Common Room / Cause of death help please..
« on: Monday 13 October 08 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Is anybody able to make out what is written in the line under "Pneumonia 7 days" ?  ???

I'm not sure, but the second word looks a little bit like "Incompetence" to me, but what does that term mean as a cause of death??

I'd be really grateful for your ideas!

Hi Valda,

Thanks for that information :), sorry I am slow to reply. That would explain why they are nowhere to be found if the pages are missing - very frustrating though! :(

Thanks for your help,

Hi Louisa,

Thank you for having a look for them :) - they really do all seem to have gone AWOL, don't they! :o ::)
Those certs for Harrison are definately next on my list to order, it will be intersting to see where he was living in June 1901.

You could be right, the family may have gone abroad for a while, though it is unlikely to be visiting Carolines family - she was born in Ireland only because her father's regiment was based there for a short while, her family came from Wales and Buckinghamshire.. :-\

Looks like I will have to wait until the 1911 census to find out more about this family!

Many thanks again for your help!

Please can somebody have a look for this family in the 1901 census, I have spent so many hours looking for them with no luck, they just seem to have completely vanished!  :( ::)

Benjamin John Bulley b.1848 Romford Essex (He was a Widower in 1901) - he died in 1913.

and his children:

Harrison Bulley b.1875 St Pancras
Eliza Alice Bulley b.1877 St Pancras (She turns up in Ely, Cambs in 1903)
Margaret Rosetta (also known as Rose) Bulley b.1880 St Pancras

also:
Henry (or Harry) Bulley b.1846 Romford Essex

In 1891 they were all living in Upper North Street, Islington, Thornhill Ward.
I have an address for them in 1896 as 63 North Street, All Saints Battlebridge, Kings Cross - and in 1904 I have 61 North Street as their address (both from marriage certs).

I would be so grateful if anybody could spot even just one of these people!  :)

Many thanks in advance,

Hertfordshire / Re: Letchworth Garden City - Is this house still there?

Hi Mark,

There seems to be a modern photo of Melverley on this site ;D

I'm sure somebody local will be able to tell you more about the building, there is also a museum just down the road from the house, it might be worth sending them an email to see what info they might have!

Best of luck in your quest!

Thanks for all the help! I hadn't even thought of looking for births for Fanny Blakes!  :)

Frances gives her birthplace as Bethnal Green in the 1881 and 1901 census', but in 1891 her place of birth is Whitechapel. Her address on the marriage cert is 31 Palm Street, but I know that address was the home of the Miller family - they are still there in the 1881 census. In the 1881 census Frances and family were living at 30 Wennington Road.

Hollie - perhaps our elusive Blakes are related...they seem to share a love of hiding in the census'! Best of luck in finding your Blakes!  ;D

Just had a look at my tree and realised that Catherine Wensley married the other witness, Henry Miller a year later... ::) :-[ My memory is getting terrible these days! I thought the name was slightly familiar! :o Sorry if I have confused anyone!

Hi Meliora and Jorose,

Thanks for your thoughts on this - I am having a lot of trouble with this Blake family!  ::) ;D

I guess it is possible that her father may not really have been George Blake, but I'm not really sure how I can prove that that Frances is "my" Frances.. :-\ Unless my Frances has her age recorded wrongly on the census, that does seem to be the most likely match for her birth..

One of the witnesses on the wedding cert is the grooms brother, Henry Miller, but the other is a lady called Catherine Wensley, so I have no idea who she may be!? The marriage was on Christmas Day in 1877 at St James the Less, Bethnal Green.

Also, I noticed that whereas her husband James Miller signed the register with a "x" to represent his mark, Frances seems to have signed her own name, so presumably she has had some basic education?
