:) I think this is for Sue,

My husband's ancestor Benjamin Thomas b.1868 St.Clements, Oxford, is to be found in 1881 census at this school. I have been unable to find him in 1891 and would like to find out what happened to him between 1881 and 1901 when he turns up in London married to Emily Hooker.

On looking at information about the school it appears that some of the boys were encouraged to migrate to Canada but a search of the 1891 census for Canada hasn't thrown him up either.

During the 3 years to 1884 14 had gone to sea and 28 had emigrated to Canada; the remainder were dispersed in various ways.

Is there anyone who would be able to look at the Annual Report for 1884 to see if any names were given and whether Benjamin Thomas shows up, please?

Surrey Lookup Requests / POTTER, Mary & Richard Guildford births?
« on: Sunday 12 September 10 04:55 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone who could check Parish Registers for Guildford area 1785 to 1796, please?

Siblings Mary and Richard POTTER were both convicted and transported to Australia within 3 years of each other.

Richard's Ticket of Leave gives his "Native Place" as Guildford and his year of birth as 1790 (see below).

His crime was in Surrey and his trial and conviction were at Kingston, Surrey.

His gravestone gives lie to the year of birth stated on the Ticket of Leave as it says that he was 45 years old at death
and the year of death was 12 April 1841 - making his year of birth nearer to 1795/6.

Mary ("wife of William Wilmot") is assumed to have been born about 1786 based on later information. Her trial took place at St.Albans, Hertfordshire but to date, I have not been able to
find any detail other than her conviction from the Liberty of St Albans court date was 3rd May 1810 -

"Easter Sessions Class HO27 Piece 6, Page 94 Larceny
.
Mary Wilmot, Elstree convicted for larceny with Mary Taylor, a wooden box 2/0d, 2 club books and £12 in notes at
the Plough Inn Elstree property of John Drinkwater, William Howell, James and Robert Pegler"

So, knowing for a fact that these two were siblings, I have been trying to find births to match. I'm assuming that Mary
was working in Hertfordshire. But it's also possible that Richard's claim to being from Guildford could also just be
that he worked there and committed his crime there.

I've looked through IGI for the Richard/Mary combination Surrey and Hertfordshire. The only couple I have come up with are:

RICHARD POTTER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 28 DEC 1790 Godalming,Surrey
C013332 Parents: Richard and Mary
THERE IS A MARY WITH THIS COUPLE BUT ch.1797

Thanks for anything.

South Africa / Grave - Thomas Price d.12 Feb 1897 Johannesburg
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 06:55 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please tell me how I can find where this ancestor of my husband is buried? I'm hoping it might give us a clue as to the cause of death and why he was in Johannesburg at that time, having been born in Wales in 1864.

Thanks,
OzzieJoan

Essex Lookup Requests / Ellen (Elain) BUTCHER b.ca.1778
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 07:06 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help find the cause of death of this lady?

I have found 3 IGI references to her all giving her DOB as 1782 and her name as Elain. However, I was given to understand that her DOB was 1771 and her name Ellen, and that she died 1811.

She married Daniel BROWN in Belchamp Walter in 1803. They had 2 daughters - Maria b.15 May 1803 and Elizabeth b.1808.

In 1811 Daniel was convicted of an unknown crime and sentenced to "life". I don't know where this sentence was carried out. Subsequently he was transported to Australia where he lived out his life.

I'm wondering whether his crime had anything to do with Ellen's death and would appreciate help in tracing this, please.

Hertfordshire / Mary WILLMOT Convict sentenced 3.5.1810
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 06:29 BST (UK)  »
A real shot in the dark. Does this lady mean anything to anyone, please?

That might be a married name and she was Mary POTTER but nothing certain as no marriage can be found.

The only clue I have that she was from Hertfordshire is the following:

Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868 - states she was from the "Liberty of St.Albans"

Any help would be appreciated.

Australia / How do I find what the crime was?
« on: Monday 28 June 10 05:29 BST (UK)  »
I have 2 members of my Tree who met and married in Australia in 1813. Both had been transported from England. Him I know about but I would like to find out about her.

She was Mary WILMOT (née POTTER) born 1786. No idea where and I cannot find a marriage for her to any WILMOT.

Arrived in Australia on 10th October 1811 aboard "Friends" from England.

During the voyage to Australia she gave birth to a daughter Elizabeth WILMOT in 1811.

Can someone please tell me how I find out why she was sent to Australia?

Does anyone know how to access the shipping list for "Friends" arriving in Australia 10.10.1811, please?

Hope someone can help. These 2 children surname OLDHAM are on the 1841 census as age 4 (Sarah) and 7 (Margret) living at NetherGreen, Leeds with their father Jas.OLDHAM age given as 30, no mother. Father has N for place of birth but the girls have Y, so presumably they were born Leeds area. The father was born Rochdale.

I did find one Sarah age 14 living as a lodger at Watering Trough, Werneth, Cheshire but she gave her place of birth as Werneth.

Thanks for anything you can find.
