Hi Ray

I've tried searching further afield, but haven't found any Joseph Nevilles who seem plausible. One possible line of enquiry might be the witnesses to Mary Ann's first wedding to the ill-fated William Jones (without whose death I wouldn't be here), Sarah Woods and Mary "Nevells" [sic]. I don't think it's unreasonable to hypothesise that this Mary might be either Joseph's sister or sister-in-law; if it's the latter, then if I can find a wedding, I'd then have the name of a hypothetical brother who I can search for.

Hello,

This is a long shot and I may be barking up completely the wrong tree here, but I have to start somewhere...

My ancestor Joseph NEVILLE married Elizabeth WOODS in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, in 1809. Their three children, Mary Ann (my ancestor), William and Ann were also baptised in Rickmansworth (in 1811, 1813 and 1815), but Mary Ann and Ann married in Harefield, Middlesex. (I cannot as yet find a marriage for William, but someone of that name was sentenced to be transported to Australia in 1837, which may be why I can't find one).

FindMyPast (I don't have a subscription) doesn't seem to have a baptism for a Joseph Neville (I'm searching the twenty years either side of 1785) in Hertfordshire, so I'm wondering if there is some kind of family link to Harefield (it seems that Ann, their youngest, was born in Middlesex). If he was from Middlesex, however, I can't seem to find a baptism. Is there something I might be overlooking or somewhere else I can search?

I don't suppose you might know what a bease is?

It's a plural form of beasts, in fairly common use around this time.

Think cows or oxen.

Thanks, I didn't know that.

I have tried in the past to study Secretariat Hand especially the Scottish variations.   Eventually you just get accustomed to it.

I found a Guide and Tutorial which I think was from www.sog.org  but it doesn't come up there now.   Fortunately I copied both and could send those pdf pages if anyone wants to study it - just PM me.

Alternatively there is a bodleian page which shows how some letters were written - http://rycote.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/Palaeography-Guide-alphabet

That would be useful, Malcolm33, I'll PM you.

Next set:

now
More
p(ar)ticulerly
first
excepted
flock bed
bease

I think the last word is twelve, but the first letter has been cut from the image.  Is that so?

The first letter is a t, sorry, didn't mean to cut it off. I don't suppose you might know what a bease is?

Wessen

One of the witnesses is a Nicholas Weston, so I don't think it's much of a stretch for this to be the same individual as this Nicholas Wessen.

Gouldfyngr?[/b]  (Is he the man with the Midas touch?)

Let's hope nobody entered his web of sin...

All and singuler

Thanks for all your help, horselydown86. :)

Thanks, arthurk. Weird how the scrivener capitalised the initial letter of "doinge", but there you go.

...and here are the third.

I've got an idea with some of these, but some have me completely stumped (I think they may be abbreviated). A fresh pair of eyes would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in anticipation

Evening all

I've been transcribing a few more ancestors' wills (from the same family), and have a few more words I don't know what to make of. Here are the first four:
