Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Baptism Jonathan Longhurst
« on: Tuesday 08 August 06 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

According to the infamous IGI Jonathan Longhurst was baptised 27 October 1822 at Abinger.

Would be grateful for confirmation his parents were William and Mary Longhurst and a fathers occupation if listed.

Are there any other Jonathan's being baptised around this time and in this part of Surrey but not showing up on the IGI.

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / When were they married?
« on: Tuesday 11 July 06 22:57 BST (UK)  »
I am working with another Rootschatter and helping out with a parish look-up for a marriage.

The church in question has not deposited their records which date from the 1500's, there are no IGI or other transcripts.

I have been given a photo of an entry in the Banns book by the parish archivist, the page couldn't be photocopied as the register is in a sad state.

In December 1766, the Banns were published on 3 consecutive weeks but there is no mention of the actual wedding date.

Would a wedding service have actually taken place either immediately after the 3rd publication or within a couple of weeks or were the couple considered married after the 3rd publication?

All the entries in this Banns book have no actual marriage date just the 3 dates for the banns.

Also there is no space for the couples or witnesses signatures.

However, at some time between 1766 and the early 1800's the official Banns book format changed and there are now spaces for a wedding date and signatures.

Clarification would be appreciated.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Isaac Longhurst Marriage 1857
« on: Friday 30 June 06 10:35 BST (UK)  »
On freebmd there is a marriage entry in 1857 December qtr for Isaac Longhurst ref Kingston 2a 307.

Could SKS check on a marriage index or the 1861 census to see if he married either Hannah Inwood or Ellen Long who are the 2 possibles for that entry.

Thanks muchly in advance.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / COMPLETED Surname query - Haysman
« on: Monday 19 June 06 14:44 BST (UK)  »
A lady by the name of Sarah Haysman married into my Longhurst family in 1809. On the marriage entry she signs her mark as does her husband.

I am having trouble finding any suitable references in the IGI (I know it's not complete but it's somewhere to start) to this surname and later entries in the Freebmd index.

Can anyone with access to indeces just check for me to see if there are any Haysman families in the county. I have a birth date for her (18th August 1786) but I think her surname may have been something else (Heasman, Cheesman) on the baptism register.

Thanks in advance.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Baptism look-up please - Walter Longhurst
« on: Monday 12 June 06 14:35 BST (UK)  »
Born around 1550, his siblings appear on the IGI transcripts for Ockley between 1539 and 1552 but he doesn't (I know the Igi is not complete).

His father was John Longhurst and mother Amy.

Is there a possible sighting?

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / COMPLETED Surrey Wills 1574/1575
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 18:50 BST (UK)  »
I am led to believe John Longhurst of Ockley died around 1574/1575 and left a will which has been proved.

I have looked at the link to the Surrey wills page and tried the national archives but can't find his name in the indeces.

Can anyone here suggest where else to try?

Thanks in advance

Dublin / John Sherry born Dublin 1792
« on: Wednesday 24 May 06 18:05 BST (UK)  »
John Sherry my GGGG-GF  has always been my 'brickwall', but I would like to hope that his birth/baptism date could be found.

By the 1820's he had arrived in London as a tailor, was married to a 'Sophia' from Cornwall and had started a family. The family became funeral directors/undertakers and remained in the Paddington/Marylebone area until the 1980's when my father finally sold his part of the family business.

I am aware that very few records survive from this time and Dublin is a big place but does a Rootschatter out there have any suggestions or research tips for finding this information or should I consider the case closed?

Here's hoping.
