Hi Freckles

There is this link to Manor Park cemetery here.

http://www.eolfhs.org.uk/eolcem06.htm

As you have names, dates and the plot numbers I suggest you give them a ring or email to confirm that you are searching in the right cemetery. According to the site, there is no charge at the moment for lookups, might get away with no charge as you have all the details, you just want to confirm the right cemetery.

If it isn't the right cemetery....

A map of the City of London Cemetery in Manor Park can be found here.

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/our_services/health_safety/cemetery_crematorium/map.htm

Their areas however, have number squares not lettered ones. They make a charge for lookups. But ditto above, might get away with no charge as you have all the details, you just want to confirm the right cemetery.

Tell both or either you are making a visit and don't have the time to waste wandering around looking for plots that may be in the other place.

The Common Room / Re: When were they married?

Cant get to the LMA to check out the registers for the bride's church and published transcriptions only exist up to 1653 which is too early for 1766.

People have married in the church and in the banns book for later dates, wedding dates have been added in.

Will enquire about the BT's.

Hi Andrea

Thanks for the reply.

It is the parish archivist who has given me the information. There is no separate marriage register only a banns book, the last banns were published on the 29th December and yes they could have married in another parish as the bride came from elsewhere. But all the entries in this banns book are of the same format, 3 dates for the banns and nothing else entered even when both parties were 'of the parish'.

The Common Room / When were they married?

I am working with another Rootschatter and helping out with a parish look-up for a marriage.

The church in question has not deposited their records which date from the 1500's, there are no IGI or other transcripts.

I have been given a photo of an entry in the Banns book by the parish archivist, the page couldn't be photocopied as the register is in a sad state.

In December 1766, the Banns were published on 3 consecutive weeks but there is no mention of the actual wedding date.

Would a wedding service have actually taken place either immediately after the 3rd publication or within a couple of weeks or were the couple considered married after the 3rd publication?

All the entries in this Banns book have no actual marriage date just the 3 dates for the banns.

Also there is no space for the couples or witnesses signatures.

However, at some time between 1766 and the early 1800's the official Banns book format changed and there are now spaces for a wedding date and signatures.

Clarification would be appreciated.

Hi Russell

The registers are still at the Parish because the PCC have decided not to deposit them. As a result the church get many requests for look-ups, especially from America, and requests to see the books themselves which they try to accomodate. However, some of the books are in a sad state of repair and taking copies is tricky, photocopying is often not an option so the archivist uses a digital camera.

So, I have received an email from Holy Cross Greenford with a copy of the entry in  their Banns Book from 1766 for Robert Ambrose and Elizabeth Marnham. Can you send me a personal message with your email address so I can send it directly to you?

Their entry is in the standard format for that time and no actual date of marriage is shown. As the banns were published 3 times you can assume that they were considered married either at the very end of December or very early into January.

The photo is slightly cropped and, as far as I can tell, 'Banns' is missing from the top left, as are the first letters of 'published' on the third line and from the right, the last letters of the curate's name 'Campbell'. No other vital information is missing.

The archivist is still looking for a baptism, do you have a name to go on?

He will email with their address when this is all sorted.

Hope this helps.

Hi Sirus

Just to add, the National Archives has the Doric return journeys from Nova Scotia, can't find outward bound, but the ship always sailed into Liverpool.

The National Archives may have more info, but I can't find it, I don't use their site very often!
