Good question, all my knowledge is of family medals and they were impressed with the regiment the individual was officially in, but I stand to be corrected if that is not always the case.

Have you tried the British Library for more info. I think they are supposed to get a copy of all books published.

In 1901 census, listed at being at home, but that doesn't mean he was . No trace of his real name in the records I have found. The medal rolls list all the people who received the QSA and KSA, and my brother remembers seeing at least the QSA when he was  with grandad.
Maybe I need to trace all the people on the roll

He was born in 1880. He may have told my mum who and why he signed up as  but so many years later she could not remember.
That he used an assumed name is not really under question, I'm just trying to figure out a way of discovering that Identity.
WW1 he used his real name , no mention of an alias. Service record lost.
