Scotland / Re: Is anyone researching Scottish Cobbs?

Hi Snowolf,

I have a John Cobb in my tree born in 1849 - I'm not sure where though. He had a brother Alexander and a sister Mary Ann. I think he's a distant uncle of mine.

Maybe we should swap trees?

Perthshire / Re: Is this a total dead end?

Yes, that's them - they were fruitful and multiplied! I've been contacted by other descendants from Donald & Charlotte's children, but no-one's got past Donald.

There are also records for three children born in Caputh to Donald McKenzie and Elizabeth Duncan, which might be the "other" family that the tombstone hints at.

There is another McKenzie family in  the Clunie/Craigie/Caputh area around the same time and I've often wondered if they might be siblings, but I doubt I can prove it!

It's a very frustrating hobby isn't it!?

Perthshire / Is this a total dead end?
« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 08:27 GMT (UK)  »
I've been tracing the McKenzie family of Craigie, near Caputh in Perthshire and I think I've hit a dead end, but I'm wondering if anyone can think of a way round it.

My ancestor, Donald McKenzie, married to Charlotte Isles, is on the 1841 census, but not the 1851 census, so he must have died sometime between the two. There's no tombstone, and his parents aren't mentioned on the marriage record for him and Charlotte. Is there any other way I can find out who his parents are?

There are a lot of family legends, such as Donald's grandfather came to the area with the 1745 uprising (not a Jacobite unfortunately) as a farrier and then settled in the area, before the local Laird set him up in the Smithy in Craigie, but I don't really know if this helps me....

According to the 1841 census Donald was born in Perthshire, and I think he may have been married twice - there's a tombstone in Caputh church (with no date, annoyingly) which reads "Donald McKenzie, sometime smith in Craigie, erected this in memory of his wife and children." It's probably my Donald, but as he predeceased Charlotte he must be talking about another wife.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Thank you both. They do crop up in the census and the OPRs quite often, especially around the Perth and Dundee areas, it's just an interesting distribution and an unusual name.

I often wonder if all the Scottish Cobbs are descended from one family - the one mentioned in Brechin in 1530? Which of course begs the question where did that one come from!

Wow! Yes, that's him alright - apart from anything else, he's the spitting image of my Dad!

Thank you so much! Is there any chance you could email those pictures to me Jorose?

Scotland / Is anyone researching Scottish Cobbs?

Hello all,

I'm very interested in the Cobb branch of my family, which is concentrated around Forfar and Angus from about 1750. It seems to be a fairly unusual name in Scotland, and according to my dictionary of Scottish surnames, the surname appears in Brechin, Angus around 1530. There's another group of Cobbs concentrated around Dorset in England that don't appear to be connected, but I'd be interested in hearing anything about any Scottish Cobbs and their origins.

Thanks!

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Menzies family in Surrey (I think)
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 08:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm trying to trace a Scottish family that moved to Surrey shortly after 1901. James Menzies, born in Perthshire married Elizabeth Mary Cobb born in Coupar Angus, Scotland. James died in Coupar Angus in 1943 and Elizabeth died in Richmond, Surrey in 1959. They had at least two children - Lawrence, born in 1906 (I think) who went on to become deputy governor of the Bank of England, and a J Menzies who signed his father's death certificate.

I'd love to know more about this family, and whether there are any descendants who might remember my great grandma and grandma. Any information would be very gratefully received!

South Africa / Anyone know anything about this lot?
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 08:28 GMT (UK)  »
Amongst my great grandmother's papers I've found a letter dated 1956 from South Africa from a Jack Cobb, informing her of his father's death. He never mentions his father by name, but since my great-grandma's married name was Cobb this Jack must have been the son of her husband's brother Andrew.

Andrew was born in Perthshire and I have him on the 1901 census as unmarried, so he must have married after this date and left for South Africa. There's no marriage certificate on Scotlandspeople, so I think he may have married in South Africa. According to the let Jack was born about 1908 and his brother Albert 1915. There are a number of sisters too, but as he says in his letter "you know how women are about their ages." Jack also says he has two sons.

Trouble is, I'm not massively sure about how to go about researching South Africa at all, or even if it's possible. Can anyone help me trace this line?

Aberdeenshire / Re: How likely is this?

Yes, I have a Theodore as a grandson of James as well and another one as a great-grandson. It's an unusual name to crop up so often isn't it?

There is still a Baron of Bognie today apparently....I'm tempted to write to him and see if he knows anything!
