Cork / Re: Where is Gara? Where is Tullig?
« on: Tuesday 09 July 13 03:31 BST (UK)  »
Valentine, son of John Roche and Margaret Condon, was baptized in Douglas-Ballygarvan RC parish, 9 Aug 1818, parents' residence Tullig.  Tullig More (or Tulligmore) is in Ballinaboy civil parish, about 12 miles north of Kinsale.  It was the location of a large flour mill operated by Daniel Keleher (Keller) at that time.  The area would now be referred to as Ballinhassig.  I show another son of John & Margaret's, Patrick, baptized at Shanbally, Carrigaline (Passage West RC parish), 14 April 1822, godparents Mick Roche and Mary Tuomy.  There was also a large flour mill in Shanbally townland.  A Valentine Roche operated the flour mill at Brownsmills, Kinsale, at some time, and he is perhaps your Valentine.  The buildings were still standing when I saw them in 1983.
'Gara' would be an old spelling of Garraha, a townland in Rincurran civil parish, about 2 miles east of Kinsale town, and maybe a mile from Brownsmills. Frank Thompson

No, there was no child Dennis baptized in Tracton parish.  If a child was born in 1841, the mother can hardly have been Margaret Kiely, a child of whom was baptized in 1809.
There is some way you can send me your e-mail address.  I have never understood how this user-unfriendly site works.

I show a Maurice Russell and Margaret Kiely, of Tracton parish, Co. Cork, having 12 children baptized between 1809 and 1836 in that parish.  A son James was baptized 21 May 1822. What was the name of the other son you know to have been born in Cork?

Cork / Re: Glavin/Scanlon marriage 1860ish. Help please.

At least in some parts of County Cork, Glavin was an 'agnomen' (nickname) for Donoghue, so you may find your Glavins listed as Donoghue or O'Donoghue.

Please note that the irishgenealogy.ie website does include the baptisms and marriages of Crosshaven parish, 1826-1880. Crosshaven and Carrigaline were the same parish.

There are still Hosfords, now Catholics, in Carlingford.  The Hosfords of Tracton and Ballyfeard parishes, Co. Cork, were mixed RC and C of I.

Cork / Re: Connell - can't decipher place names!

The entry in the Tracton baptismal register for 5 Aug 1868 is for a John Connell who was the child of William Connell and Ellen Ceasy or Ceary (spelling variants of Casey or Carey).  Why do you think these would be the people you are looking for?  The Ceasy/Ceary is clearly not Cox.
Considering the distance of Lislee from Tracton (Minane Bridge) I would think it very unlikely that this entry could be made to fit in with the other entries you have found.

'Ballycounane' is one of many variant spellings for what is in the Townland Index and Griffith's Valuation 'Ballyginnane'.  It is in Liscleary civil parish and Douglas-Ballygarvan Catholic parish.
