Completed Census Requests / buying vouchers for 1901 census online
« on: Thursday 30 September 04 10:53 BST (UK)  »
hi,
Did i mention i was VERY new at this?? ...lol!
I came across a link through which it was possible to buy the vouchers to enable me to use the 1901 online, rather than the 48 hour session, £5 minimum.
does anyone have a link....I would prefer to use it this way (being able to log out and return a week later rather than having to cram it all into the 48 hour session!)
many thanks in advance!

Family History Beginners Board / research pre-internet!
« on: Thursday 30 September 04 09:30 BST (UK)  »
hi
im still fairly new at all this research, especially via the internet.
im having probs finding info on many in my tree.....how are searches done WITHOUT internet access? If I understand correctly, can I go to the local archives (im in sheffield) and search the paper records (Mostly stored on microfiche now?). will these records only be for the sheffield/yorkshire region....how would i go about searching other resources such as census returns for 1901 and before then?
sorry if im asking stuff already queried...if i am, can someone send me a link to the right page!...its just that i keep getting lost! and I cant afford to keep chipping up £5s here and there for subscriptions etc which usually end up with dead ends anyway!!

thanks in advance....

Cork / any Pynes/Pines in cork
« on: Tuesday 28 September 04 19:29 BST (UK)  »
hi all,
im trying to search for any surname Pine/Pyne from around mid 1800s.
My grandfather was originally (we think) from Cork, he is John Pyne, b.1889, with a brother Thomas b.1891 and a sister Elizabeth b.1895.  I can find no records of any, in sheffield where they grew up, or otherwise. apparently the surname was spelt Pine, but was changed by John's mother as she felt it sounded 'posher' (or so the family tale goes!)
Anyone have any info?
TIA!

Myocardial degeneration (does it say 'infarction' by chance?) - this is a heart attack.

Completed Census Requests / results on familysearch.org
« on: Friday 24 September 04 20:08 BST (UK)  »
hi,
I was wondering if anyone else had come across this wierd result when using familysearch.org?
I searched in the 1881 british census for a specific name, with exact year of birth and birthplace and got 'no matches'.
BUT! when i put in the name and a year of birth with +/- 10 years in all resources it gave me the 1881 census result that i initially searched for!

...What did i do??? :o

Family History Beginners Board / church records?
« on: Monday 20 September 04 13:53 BST (UK)  »
hi folks,
im quite a newbie at this, but doing well so far with about 5 generations of both parents families found so far.
what i wanted to ask - is it possible to go into a church and look at their records? I need to find a date of birth of a great-great grandfather to confirm the info i have on that particular line is correct...there are several births in the same area with the same name so I wondered if this was a possible track to take?  The church they were married in is still standing (not turned into a pub just yet!!) - I have the exact date of the marriage but dont seem able to confirm his date of birth.
would the church allow me to look at the records, or is there another route i can take to find this info?
The other thing i wanted to ask was, a whole family seem to not show up on the 1901 census, the parents are on the 1881 census as children, and I have the names correct, but there is no trace of them on 1901. They have an unusual surname too, so its not like i have missed them!! any advice??

Many thanks for any advice.......this is a great site, ive found loads of info just through here alone!!!!!

cheers!!
