Alva,
The book, Home by Julie Myerson is available from ABE
                     http://abebooks.com/
They have 11 copies listed. You can buy online, but they are all offered by UK dealers. Since you live in B.C.
I looked for a closer source and found that Powell's in Seattle have it.  http://powells.com/
Could not find any in B.C.

The Lighter Side / Re: Strange funny place names

What a wicked thought! Gives me ideas, but perhaps you are right; better not go there.....

Yes, I wondered about that too. It seemed like a very strange way to spell Lydia. Also thought that perhaps
Belinda was a middle name and when the census enumerator came, they decided to give her real first name. I have come across that in census records before.
All I know for certain is that there was a sister who died when Belinda was 9 years old. I have a sampler
sewn by Belinda on which there is a little poem about
the death of her sister. Unfortunately, the sister is not named and there is no date, but it is "signed",
 "Belinda Stevenson, age nine".

No one has mentioned Newfoundland, home of the strangest place names in the English-speaking world.
Here is just a small sample:

Come-by-Chance
Blow-me-down
Run-by-guess
Ha Ha Bay
Bleak Joke Cove

Bleak Island
Misery Point
Famine Point
Breakheart Point
Famish Gut
Savage Cove

Heart's Content
Heart's Delight
Comfort Cove
Little Paradise

Lion's Den
Horse Chops
Little Cat Arm
Fox Roost
Cow Head

Stocking Harbour
Petticoat Harbour

God Bay
Devil Cove

There are dozens more, but I think this lot prove my point.

EmPers,
Thank you, thank you. I am almost certain that the Belinda in the 1861 Cen. is the right one. I could have been wrong in my guess of her age(based on family info., not written records).
I noticed that there is a similar family in the 1841, John and Martha with daughter Martha. Ages same as 1861, but no Belinda. Curious. They are not there in 1851, then re-appear in 1861. Also the first John is a baker and the second, a grocer. Could well be the same family. Perhaps Belinda was away from home in 1841  or the enumerator got her age wrong and she had not yet been born.
Oh, well,I am sure it will all make sense, one day,if I can get a look at the West Hanney PRs.
I am simply delighted  to have found that my deductions from very flimsy evidence have proved to be true.(I think)
The extra Stevenson families may turn out to be useful
at some time. In such a small village, there is a good chance that they may be related, somehow. Thanks for including them.
Thanks again,
Carmela

Hi,
I am new to RootsChat and I wonder if some kind soul could help me find a most elusive gt.grandmother. Her name was Belinda STEVENSON and she would have been about 8 in 1851(I am guessing her age). Since
Belinda was an unusual name at that time, I don't suppose there was more than one in East Hanney. I have no information about her family and I am hoping find names of her parents and siblings. She died young
after giving birth to her only child, my grandmother. After her death, her husband's family took charge and made sure that my grandmother never met her Stevenson grandparents or learned anything about them. I could not find her birth record in FreeBMD. It was not too long after civil registration started, so perhaps she was not registered. PRs for West Hanney(closest church) do not seem to be available anywhere
for events after 1812.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Carmela

Completed Census Requests / Re: 1851 Census, Berks, E. Hanney, STEVENSON
« on: Tuesday 21 September 04 02:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi Kazza,
Yes, I did think of looking for a christening record, but this has proved difficult as East Hanney did not have a church and for the most likely place, West Hanney, no records after 1812 seem to be available, anywhere.
The 1851 Census seemed like my best bet for making sure of her birth place and providing me with names of her parents.
I am not sure how things work on RootsChat. Is the Census Lookup section entirely seperate from the county sections under England General? In the Berkshire section, I noticed that someone was offering
1851 Census lookups. Would I be breaking a rule if I re-posted my query on the Berks Lookup Request board?

Australia Lookups completed / Re: TYMON - Australia Passenger Lists
« on: Sunday 19 September 04 00:04 BST (UK)  »
Tymon,

"Rosw" and "Henty"are almost definitely typos in the transcriptions. If you look at your keyboard, you will see that "w" is next to "e" and "t" is next to "r".  Having made the same mistakes, many times, the cause was obvious to me.
