Family History Beginners Board / Parish registers, the IGI and all that...
« on: Tuesday 09 August 05 21:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have a marriage of a Joseph TIMM to a Fanny (about 90% certain her maiden name was MARSDEN and they married in Hope, Derbyshire in 1817.) Fanny died in 1849 and her age was given as 55 on the death certificate.

I've just had a look on the IGI and there are 2 likely looking Fanny Marsdens. One was christened in 1792 and one christened in 1794 both in Hope, Derbyshire. One of them comes from a family of 10 girls with parents Ambrose and Betty Marsden.  The other comes from a famiy of 5 girls with parents John and Hannah Marsden.

My question is this. Once you get back to this point, how do I decide if I have the right Fanny Marsden out of the two and would you "claim" either of them (and their siblings and parents) and enter them into your family tree  or would you check other sources (and if so, what?)

Thanks in anticipation!

:)

Hi Sue

just got in from work - been thinking about the TIMMs all day long!  ROFL how sad is that!  ;)

Once again thank you so very much for taking the trouble of looking into other sources.

I have got the family on the 1861 via ancestry and I've realized that I'd put Hannah as a "possible" mum for Joseph but not a 100% certainty as she was living with the family in 1851.  And of course, I can now be sure that Fanny was Josephs mum not Hannah who was wife number 2!

This is also very good news because I can now tie in the 2 sons Joseph and Mathew as defiantly being brothers.  I was in contact with another researcher last year who is descended from Mathew and although we were pretty certain Mathew and Joseph were brothers we didn't have the evidence to be 100% certain.

Indeed, the marriage of Joseph TIMM to Hannah HAWLEY is Joseph Jr and I feel confident that the marriage in 1850 was that of Joseph snr.  You're right, he didn't waste a great deal of time. Maybe a year-ish? Fanny died on 2nd January 1849.  Maybe my Joseph snr liked his home comforts?! ;)

I'm assuming that you have the 1841 census on disc?  Is it possible to print off pages from the disc or save the pages to jpg? I'd very much like to have a copy of the entry for the family. If it's on disc can you tell me where I might buy a copy and give me an idea of the cost?

Many thanks again for your time.  You're a star  :-*

Hi Sue
 :)
Thank you so very very much for doing this look up for me - yes, this is them and your other info confirms that Fanny was the mother of my ancestor Joseph TIMM.  I had until very recently thought that his mother was named Hannah.

I'd recently spotted the marriage of Joseph to Fanny in 1817 and have a death certificate for Fanny (which came yesterday) who was indeed the wife of a Joseph Timm, farmer. She died in 1849. This got me to thinking that she was most likely the mother of my Joseph born c1822
I'm going to have to re-check my sources and reasons for having Hannah down as a possible wife of my Joseph snr.  It could well be that there were 2 Josephs around of a similar age and I've confused them.....?  Believing that Hannah was the wife of Joseph snr is probably the reason why I'd missed all those christenings for the children!

I wish I didnt have to go to work this morning now!   ::)

Once again, thank you very much. You're a star  :)

Hi

I'm hoping that Some Kind Person can look up the TYMM or TIMM families for me.  The family I'm interested in were almost certainly living in Little Longstone / Monsal Dale in 1841

Joseph TIMM/TYMM a farmer born c1792 in Hope
Joseph TIMM/TYMM born c1822 in Woodland Hope
Ambrose TIMM/TYMM  born c1834 in Monsal Dale
Betty TIMM/TYMM born c1840 in Monsal Dale

I need this look up to try to confirm the wife of Joseph snr although Im interested in any other TIMM/TYMM family members living in Little Longstone or Monsal Dale at that time.

I hope this is enough information and I'll be keeping my fingers and everything else crossed that you can help me.  Many Thanks :)

Family History Beginners Board / Re: James CROWLEY b1894 - birth cert puzzle

 :)

thanks, that link was very interesting and helpful.

Since I made my posting yesterday I've  managed to find James CROWLEY (age 6) on the 1901 census living with his mother who has married a Frederick DREW.  Mary Anns mother also appears to be living with them - she's a Bridget DORICKS although I'm pretty sure this should be HORROCKS.   I have a ref for the marriage of Mary CROWLEY to Frederick DREW so  I'm hopeful that getting that marriage certificate will clarify her status as widowed or spinster.

Was divorce freely available to the "common man" at that time?  (c1894-1901) And what would the status of a divorced person be shown as on a subsequent marriage certificate?

Family History Beginners Board / James CROWLEY b1894 - birth cert puzzle
« on: Wednesday 22 September 04 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

this is my first posting on the site so please be gentle with me!! :)

I'm hoping somebody out there might be able to give me a few ideas as to why this is.....  ???

I have a copy of a birth certificate but the name of the father just has a line through it as does the occupation of the father.  Presumably because the fathers details were not given at the time the birth was registered.  The mother is listed as being Mary Ann CROWLEY formerly (looks like) HORROCKS although I've not found a marriage between John and Mary yet.

My puzzle/question is this - if Mary Ann CROWLEY was married to the childs father (or claiming to be married to him when registering the birth) why would the fathers details be left blank?

Anybody got any thoughts on this?
