Kent / Speldhurst Burials 1828/9
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 02:06 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access please to the Speldhurst burials for 1827-9?

I'm wondering if there is a burial for a Philadelphus Jeyes in those years?

He was listed as residing there in February 1827 when he wrote his Will which was proven at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 6 May 1829.  I'm looking for an age for him if he was buried there.

I don't require any other information, just looking for an age on the burial please so need to go digging about for information which I probably already have. ;D

Thanks

Nicola

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Kingston upon Hull Holy Trinity Burial 1817
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone by any chance have access to the Holy Trinity burial register for 1817 and could check an age for me please?

FindMyPast, as per usual, have large gaps in the coverage of their digitised registers and unfortunately Familysearch don't include any ages on the burial entries they have extracted.  I'd be interested in knowing the age so I can confirm which person it relates to.

25 May 1817 - Edward Redmore

Don't need any other information just looking for the age (and residence if more than just of the parish). ;)

Thanks

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / Esther Evans widows born c1787 Winscombe
« on: Sunday 18 December 16 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to ascertain the identity of Esther/Hester Evans born c1787 at Winscombe according to the 1851 Census and mother of Sarah Evans who married John Crow at Bristol St Peter in 1840.  The extracted entry of her daughter's marriage on Familysearch does not, unlike many, give the father's name.

I can find only one Hester/Esther baptised at Winscombe within a year or two of 1787, Hester Hemens daughter of George and Maria.  Her sister Elenor married at Bedminster in 1810 and sister Temperance at Bristol St Philip & St Jacob in 1817 so there are links to the Bristol area (albeit Winscombe isn't far anyway).  George and Mariah disappear out of Winscombe anyway so may well have moved to the Bristol area with their children.

Sarah Crow nee Evans lists her birthplace on the 1851 Census as Bristol St Philip and there is a Sally Evans baptised to a James and Hester Evans on 21 March 1819 at Bristol St Philip.  There are a number of other children to James and Hester so I'm not sure its the same family because Esther is with the Crows in 1851 as a widow and if there had been other surviving children you would have thought one or other may have been with her.  The last child to James and Hester was baptised in 1832.  Sarah Evans had a daughter Sarah born c1837 who is with her and John Crow as Sarah Evans on the 1841 Census and Sarah Crow on the 1851 Census.  Later in 1851 the family moved to London.

I've checked the Post 1754 Somerset Marriage Index but the only marriage I've been able to find is an Esther Harding to James Evans 25 August 1818 at Bristol St Michael.  I'm wondering whether she may have been a widow as if it is the correct Esther/Hester Evans she would have been 30 by then as per the Census.

If anyone is able to help with the marital status of Esther Harding on the 1818 marriage I'd be grateful.  It could well be a red herring.  Interestingly Hester Hemens did have an Aunt who married a Harding but I've not found a Hester/Esther to them and they moved to Banwell and then Blackford/Mark after the baptism of their first child in 1778 so I don't think she would be their child.

I know I could purchase the 1840 marriage certificate but am somewhat uninclined to do so because it is a very distant sideline and very tenuous.

Thanks

United States of America / Social Security Applications & Deaths Index
« on: Monday 14 November 16 03:34 GMT (UK)  »
Could anybody enlighten me please on what exactly the Social Security Applications & Claims Index on Ancestry actually relates to?  Was it to do with cancelling Social Security numbers when somebody died or does it relate to people claiming benefits prior to death?

I've found an entry for my cousin's wife's Great Grandfather (who was born in 1897) in the SS A & C Index but cannot find a corresponding SSD Index entry to find a year of death.  The original SSN was issued in April 1945, although it doesn't say where.  The person concerned was in the merchant navy but originally from what is now Sierra Leone.  He married in the UK in 1934 and had children up to 1943 but apart from a possible death in 1952 in the right sort of area of the UK, I can't find anything to confirm the death is correct and, as its not my family, am reluctant to waste money on a death certificate which may not be correct as its a common name.

My cousin's wife is reluctant to ask her grandfather much about his parents for personal reasons (and I will not be posting the deceased person's name for the same reason), but I have been trying to help her find out more about her family history.

Any advice appreciated.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1851 Census - Martha TIMBS - Stony Stratford area
« on: Friday 02 September 16 11:59 BST (UK)  »
Drawing a blank trying to find Martha TIMBS on the 1851 Census.  In 1841 she was in Cosgrove listed as a Draper aged 55 years.  In 1837 1847 when she wrote her Will she was in Old Stratford.  She died in September qtr 1856 Potterspury Registration District which covers Stony Stratford, Old Stratford from memory I think is within that parish.

Can anyone find me Martha on the 1851 Census please?  I suspect her birthplace will be down as Naseby (one of her sister's definitely listed it as that).  I've tried using keywords including Martha, Draper, and Naseby to no avail.  She should be down as widowed as her husband died in 1832.

Thanks

Nicola

Edited for typo.

Bedfordshire / Marston Moretaine Burials 1830-1839 - ILIFFE
« on: Friday 02 September 16 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the Marston Moretaine burials between 1830 and 1839 and could possibly have a look for me please?

Working on a hunch, which could be wrong, I'm just wondering if Sarah Iliffe (wife of John Iliffe) was buried there sometime during that period.  Ancestry trees list her as dying in Withybrook in Feb 1832 but with no source and there don't appear to be any burials for this period on Ancestry.  The family though were in Monks Kirby but using Monks Kirby Baptist chapel in Oct 1830 when they had a number of children baptised.  Their youngest though does not appear to have been baptised there when born c1832.  I'm just wondering if the family moved to Bedfordshire prior to Sarah's death and their youngest son's birthplace is incorrectly listed on 1851 Census as Monks Kirby.  There is no burial for Sarah at Monks Kirby and a quick look at Warwickshire RO's catalogue suggests the Withybrook burials for this period aren't deposited.  John Iliffe remarried in 1839 back in Warwickshire but was residing in Marston Moretaine at the time.  With a number of young children you would have thought if his wife had died in 1832 (as claimed on various Ancestry trees) he would have remarried before 1839.

If anyone could have a look at Marston Moretain's burials for me I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Nicola

PS I do not need any other information as already have it and it isn't relevant to a burial lookup for a particular parish.

Technical Help / Some of Rootschat's font sizes appear to have got much larger?
« on: Tuesday 28 June 16 19:26 BST (UK)  »
Trystan/Sarah?  Have the heading/button fonts on the site grown in size somewhat in the last day please?  On my Windows phone its getting difficult to read and some of the "buttons" aren't showing full text because of the size of the font.  Its a bit large even on my 15" laptop screen but is I accept readable.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Leicester St Mary de Castro Marriage April 1847
« on: Saturday 28 May 16 08:14 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the Leicester St Mary de Castro marriages for April 1847 please?

Clutching at straws a bit but there is a marriage of a George Proctor June qtr 1847 Leicester Registration District.  One of the other people on the page is a Squires Palmer.  An Ancestry tree lists Squires' marriage as being 8 April 1847 at St Mary de Castro.  As George Proctor is on the same reference I'm hoping he also married there about that time.

Is anybody able to check for me please?  I'd be interested to know the details if he did marry there, particularly who he married, his profession, and his father's name.

I'm wondering if he strayed over the border from Northamptonshire. ;D

Thanks

Nicola
