Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Varied Results from Different Sites.
« on: Thursday 02 January 20 18:42 GMT (UK)  »
but where did the the 2nd great grandfather come from five Generations before you know he was German?

Martin

Signed his marriage entry Johan Michael Meyer and worked at times as a sugar baker in London, classic occupation of an immigrant from that part of Europe.  He later worked as a violin and harp string maker suggesting he couldn't get work as that when he "arrived", otherwise why work as a sugar baker?!  OK I accept its circumstantial but in the case of the marriage entry it is definitely signed Johan and not John, albeit the parish clerk wrote John at the top of the entry.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: 23cM 1 Segment but two possible ancestral lines
« on: Thursday 02 January 20 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks avm, the more I look into it, the more I think that is the case.

Even though they are two separate copies of the same chromosome, it would still show as only one segment then?

I wish Ancestry would show 5-8th cousin shared matches, there could well be some other similar matches at lower level as there are quite a few matches on both those lines.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / 23cM 1 Segment but two possible ancestral lines
« on: Thursday 02 January 20 17:22 GMT (UK)  »
If the DNA match is across one segment is it only going to match one particular ancestral line or could if they coincidentally inherit sufficient on both sides of the chromosome it would show?

I ask because Dad has a match with someone with 23cM across 1 segment yet they share two separate unrelated (apart from when later generations marry separately) ancestral lines.  In both Dad's and the matches' case, one is on their father's side and one on their mother's side.  I appreciate that without a chromosome browser on Ancestry and the other party hasn't uploaded elsewhere, its difficult to know for certain.

For Dad, the father's side is a 2xGGF but the matches is 4xGGF and on Dad's mother's side it is his 4xGGF and the matches' 5xGGF.  I'm assuming, perhaps wrongly, that it's likely to be on the paternal side as that is much closer generational level to Dad.

Of the mutual 4-6th cousin shared matches with this person, 3 are confirmed on Dad's paternal side and 1 on the maternal side.  The mutual maternal side match matches a number of Dad's other maternal matches on that line but only this other person with an apparent overlap on both sides of Dad's family at 4-6th cousin level anyway.

I know there are two sides to each chromosome, would anyone have any views on whether it could just be that they both inherit sufficient DNA on that chromosome from both sides for it to show as that amount across 1 segment please on Ancestry?

I hope this makes sense, I have revised it a few times. :D

From what I can gather, Ancestry's secondary analysis removes what has been described as 'background noise'.

That would probably explain why Ancestry claim in their (I know not exactly accurate) ethnicity results that I've 6% Germanic DNA but Dad has none, yet his 2xGGF was German.  MyHeritage haven't picked it up either.  Living DNA show it as 8.7%, I've not uploaded mine yet to them but would expect it to be lower since Mum has no known German ancestors and DNA ethnicity shows none either.

Living DNA is supposed to be the most accurate for British Isles DNA, but they have only a small database, and their matching facility can't be compared to Ancestry's one.

I uploaded both my parents' Ancestry raw data to LivingDNA and paid the upgrade fee.  I knew there would be little or no matches but was interested in their regional breakdown.  Apart from the fact they're the only company that has actually picked up Dad's German ancestry at 8.7% (2xGGF), the breakdown pretty much matches the paper trail and there are some other regions that may account for a number of brickwalls.  I'm currently waiting for them to launch their German regions to see if it helps try and research his elusive 2xGGF who died in 1837.  We've no idea where he came from and the name is very common out there.  It may or may not help, have a couple of good matches on MyHeritage with people who have only German ancestry but unfortunately little or no tree.  Only time will tell.

Oh and Dad has 1 match with them, someone he matches on both Ancestry and MH and we know where she fits in anyway, and Mum none but that wasn't the reason I uploaded.

The Common Room / Re: What has happened to GenFair?
« on: Monday 30 December 19 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
Interesting they've gone back to running their own shop again, which was the situation before the societies' data went to FindMyPast and the sales went to Genfair.  They appear to have taken over Parish Chest and that's what is going to be used.  Parish Chest were always cheaper on postage than Genfair, if what I was after was listed on both I'd always use Parish Chest.  Be interesting to see what happens, albeit I've not purchased much in some years.  I did purchase some parish register indexes last Christmas to make use of the digitised registers on Familysearch at one of their centres, and then indexed copies of the registers appeared on Ancestry in the summer. :-\

Glad to see you taking advantage of those lower prices again.

Happy New Year
Sandra   :) :)

Thanks Sandra, yup just renewed at the reduced price again.  Now renewing 29/12 instead of 28/12 as recent years but that's because I just get later in the day renewing each year and just tipped past midnight. ;)

Interestingly I've not seen anything on the website nor their Facebook page about a Premium offer this year which posted about here, I'm sure last year it was definitely visible to all by the 27th as Mum made use of it on the 28th.  I wouldn't expect an email anyway as had subscription and unfortunately Ancestry seems to think I live in Australia and only sends me offers for there even though my account and subs have only ever been taken out on the UK site.  Seemed to happen after I purchased a DNA test from the UK site last year, ever since just get Aussie offers which aren't much use. ::)

Happy New Year
Nicola

When I checked on the 'my account' details it says I will pay £179 - any ideas what I might be doing incorrectly?

It would do as that would be the renewal price if you had not cancelled.  Mine expires this evening so shall be making use of the offer, particularly as got Dad's DNA tested this year. :D

Every time I request an auto-cluster's report, I seem to lose matches who were on previously yet their match details remain the same.  They seem to change the goal posts all the time. ::)
