Hi Carrie,

I hope you are are still around on RootsChat!  I am not sure why I missed your reply back in 2012 but I was just looking back through some old posts on the site and saw it.

I am very interested in the Barbara you have in your tree that inherited money and stipulated in her will that no money went to her husband - do you have any more info on her you can share with me?  Specifically, birth/marriage/death dates (or details) and whether she was married to James Christie.  Also, if it is the same person is there any chance I could get a copy at the will (assuming you have it in an electronic form)?

The fact Barbara ended up in a Sallies home is still one of the mysteries of my family I haven't cleared up but perhaps you were right that her husband was abusive or inadequate due to alcohol... very sad if it's true but I know that side of my family were pretty hard working class people.  My mother told me that my father and his father never talked about their family so one would have to assume there were some secrets and/or some shame there.

And just out of interest, since we're related very distantly, where do you fit into the Fettes/Finlayson family?

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks folks - I just found out it is indeed Whitlaw or Whitelaw as I did an IGI search and found her marriage to Robert Christie in 1799.  (IGI seems to think the name was Whitelaw)... I could have sworn it said Alistair though!

Canuc, that is a great idea re turning it negative... I can do that in Photoshop CS2 quite easily so will try that in future.

Cheers for the help...

The Common Room / Help deciphering Death Cert please

Hi,

I hope this is the right place to post this - I did look for a specific topic to do with deciphering certificates but there doesn't seem to be one (which surprises me a bit actually) so I guessed this would be the place to post it.

Anyway, this is the death cert of my g.g.gf James Christie and the only thing I can't read properly is his mother's maiden name. I can see his father was Robert Christie and his wife's first name was Isabella but what is the name next to "M.S"?  I *think* it says "Alistair" but if anyone can look at this file and let me know what they think what it says I'd appreciate it.

I attached the image but you can also find the image at the link below - it's the first entry on the page (just so no one is confused):  http://www.41south.com/familyresearch/DeathCert_JamesChristie_17-Jun-1889.TIF

Many thanks in advance,

Mike

Thanks so much to both of you for doing these - your efforts are truly appreciated and if you ever need any Aussie lookups do not hesitate to let me know.

Riley, turns out the G.J Christie is indeed my father's father.  At first I thought there was a child (Henry) I did not know anything about but I realised from the birth date it was actually Nancy.... guess the handwriting wasn't so hot as usual with these old documents.

The W.J. Rowe does not appear to be my Mum's father unfortunately but it's good to be able to eliminate that anyway.

Helen, I've sent you an email privately for the probate info as per your request.

Many thanks again to everyone who helped me out with these searches.

Great - thanks so much Helen... photos would be great or else just a handwritten copy of what's important in it.

RootsChat is really so cool - it's amazing there are so many nice people who will do looks ups!  :-)

Thanks Riley - much appreciated!

Ok, so that at least means the number in the archives NZ record title should match that in the cenotaph records... so they obviously don't have all the NZ servicemen/women from WW1.

Keeping my fingers crossed some kind Wellingtonian can do this lookup for me.

Thanks MkII - I really appreciate it.

Stephanie - I did search by name initially but the matching records do not seem to include my grandfathers and searching by their serial numbers did not find anything at all... so I am hoping the archive files will be conclusive one way or the other.

I know both men were originally from Dunedin but searching by name I could not find any Rowe's or Christie's that fitted with what I know about them... hence still needing someone to do the Wellington lookups if possible.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for that - I didn't know about that site so it was very useful!

Does anyone know whether the number quoted after the name and war (eg: ROWE, William John - WW1 86593) in the Archway reference was their actual military service/serial no?  I've done a search for 86593 and 84935 but the Cenotaph database does not find any matches... but many others have 5 digit numbers starting with 8 so I am assuming I am correct it thinking it was their serial no.

I guess it's possible the Cenotaph hasn't got all the NZ soldiers on their DB - or at least not my (possible) grandfathers - if those numbers are their serials... so I'm a tad puzzled.

I guess only an archives NZ lookup will prove it either way but thanks for the website - it's been bookmarked for future research.
