Lancashire / Manchester Mayors
« on: Thursday 07 June 07 20:33 BST (UK)  »
There is a family rumour (don't we all love then :D  :D ) that one of my ancestors was the Mayor of Manchester. There is no further information from family but I have found the following Mayor

Sir John MARK - Mayor of Manchester 1890-91 & 1891-92. I have contacted Manchester town hall but all they could do was confirm he was Mayor.

Does anyone know where I can contact to find any further information about Sir John MARK to either prove (or more likely disprove) the rumour

England / Help Reading these, Please
« on: Sunday 03 June 07 12:43 BST (UK)  »
I spent yesterday searching for my paternal Grandmothers family and found census returns on Ancestry from 1841 to 1901, however I am unable to read either the place or occupation on one of them.

The details are 1871 Census, Chesterfield, Source Ref RG10, Piece 3612 Folio 54, Page 10

I am trying to work out where they were living at the top of the page and the occupation of Thomas GOULD (he is with William, Catherine & Sarah GIBBS. I think it says Labourer at Gas ????.

All ideas welcome

Technical Help / Virgin.net PC Guard- Completed
« on: Saturday 12 May 07 11:00 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone else out there that uses virgin.net as their ISP.

I am looking at giving their PC Guard internet security a go but wondered if anyone else has used it and how easy & reliable it is.

I currently have NIS2007 running and it seems to be eating away at my PC. It always is updating something or another, running some process that I can't find/stop, etc and am ready to bin it.

Advice welcome

Technical Help / Can't send an email - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 06 May 07 12:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I recently received an email from a friend and have been trying to reply to her for about 5 days. I choose reply (so I know the email address is OK) typed my message and hit Send.

I keep getting the following message back

501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments to RCPT command

Her email address is name@name-name.fslife.co.uk.

Does anyone know what this error message means and how I can send my message, or if this problem is her end or mine?

Canada / Mary Jane Gates - Halifax marriage, next steps?
« on: Sunday 15 April 07 15:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I have recently received a certified copy of the entry for my GGGrandparents marriage as follows

Thomas HILL married Mary Jane GATES, 13/01/1868, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA.

As this is a copy of the full page, it is almost impossible to read the witnesses names (i've tried enlarging but no use). Does anyone know if NSARM provide copies of the certificates or is this the best I will get.

Also, I now know Mary was 25 when she married so how would I find her birth registration from c1843.

All advice greatly appreciated

Kildare / Curragh Camp, Kildare
« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 22:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, as my irish history is not good.

I have recently found a possible birth of a GG Aunt on the IGI. The details show Emily Hill, born 23 December 1879, Curragh Camp, Kildare, Ireland. Parents Thomas Hill & Mary Jane Gates Hill.

I believe Thomas was oroginally born in Ireland but do not know where at the moment. I have found a possible marriage for Thomas & Mary in Canada (Mary was from Canada) and he served in the British Army. His regiment were in Ireland at the time of Emily's birth.

Please can some-one let me know if, and how, I may be able to obtain a copy of Emily's birth certificate or find out more about Curragh Camp.

Cheers

Technical Help / PC Memory
« on: Wednesday 10 January 07 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
My PC is running slow and I think it needs some more memory (only has 256 RAM) and have been talking with our PC support guy. He has asked me to find out what motherboard I have in my PC - is there any way I can find out what board is inside if I can't find all the stuff that came with the PC.

It's not a PC 'make' but a shop built model and about 2 years' old. Sadly, the shop is no longer there so can't ask them.

Cheers
