Northamptonshire / Grafton Manor - Grafton Regis
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 20:48 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out when my Grandmother came to work at Grafton Manor.
Her name was Pretoria May Adams and, I believe, she was a children's nurse/maid at the Manor prior to her marriage. I also believe she was known as May by the family.
I know she was there when she married in 1926 but do not know when she came to the area.
She was born c1901 at Swanley Junction in Kent,  and spent some time in an orphanage and possibly came from there to the Manor.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanx
Dinie :o

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Orphanages in Kent 1900 - 1920
« on: Sunday 03 April 05 22:06 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of any salvation army orphanages in Kent between 1900 & 1920? My grandmother Pretoria Adams spent some time in a Kent orphanage with her siblings - William, Fred & Annie in the early 1900's but I don't know exactly when or where.
I've emailed the salvation army but they have never replied (not even to say they can't help me!)
I believe they went into the orphanage because their house burned down but again no further info. She did not talk to any of her children so we are chasing ghosts (literally) here and any help would be a great help.
Thanks :(

Family History Beginners Board / Pretoria May Adams
« on: Sunday 26 September 04 19:49 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help point me in the right direction as i feel i am going round in circles ???

My maternal Grandmother, PRETORIA MAY ADAMS was born c1900/01 and i cannot find her birth recorded anywhere. I have a copy of both her marriage certificate and death certificate. Info i hold as follows:
Married Ernest Solomon Gascoyne 28 August 1926,
Died 25 November 1961.
Father - William Robert Adams, Engineer deceased on Pretoria's marriage certificate
Brothers - Jack (possibly died in WW1), William married Maud, Fred married Jean,
Sister - Annie married Arthur Betteridge
I have no dates for the above and do not have her mothers name. She spent some time in a Salvation Army orphanage in the Kent area before going into service in 1914 or 1915.

If anyone has any info or advise i would be most grateful
