Armed Forces / South African Light Horse Boer War
« on: Monday 18 August 08 13:09 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone who can do look ups or tell me where to look for service records for the Boer War, my grandfather Henry Langley Cooper born 8th February, 1877 in Surry Hills, Sydney, fought in the South African Light Horse Contingent during the Anglo Boer War. I have checked on Aust. War Memorial and National Archives, the only Henry Cooper that shows up is from Tasmania, whereas my grandfather was from Sydney. I have been told it's possible that his records could be listed on the British Archives, I have emailed them and waiting a reply, not sure if this will have results, and at present am trying to cover all options.

Hi Leonie
Your going to think I'm really stupid , I have read the how to send Personal Message but I am still unsure, do I click on find member icon first or do I type the message first, also when you say to put an x instead of @ , are you referring to in my email address. Now you can see how little I know about computors, it's all trial and error with me.
Help , Cheryl.

Hello Leonie,
Sorry about that last message I must have hit the wrong button. now where was I, as I was trying to say I was not going to look at the computor today , still trying to get through doing our tax for last year (slow poke aren't I ) curiosity got the better of me and I'm glad it did , you will not believe this one, I also was married at St. Barnabas back in 1968 when Reverend Henningham was there. I went to Cabramatta Primary School and Cabramatta High School, so I have stayed within this area all my life, perhaps we may have even known each other, (coincidences)!
I have not had a chance to check details about Sir Danial Cooper, been to preoccupied with finding facts on Captain John Cooper , there have been a few stories bandied about saying that Captain John was a pirate whaler but I have not come across any evidence to substantiate them as yet, dare say I never will, because with what you have told me it would appear that he was a bonafide whaler.

Hello Leonie,
I have another small query which is yet to be verified ,this was found among family notes, it says that Sir Daniel Cooper was grandfathers second cousin, now I'm not sure if they mean to great great grandfather John or to great grandfather Henry in any case it is yet to be proven.
I am in Fairfield in Sydney and as if there aren't enough coincidences my younger brother lives up your way, he is situated at Yarrabah on the Aboriginal settlement, his wife teaches the Aboriginal children at one of the schools up there.
More coincidences,(this one I find a little ironic) as a child my
family lived next door to a family with the surname Glover,(huh!).
I am still searching around to see if there are any living relatives with ties to the Cooper family who may have more information, I remember being told years ago that there was an old great Aunt who had information relative to Captain John, however as most of the older members have now passed on I have lost my leads, I have one Uncle still alive he is up at Port Macquarie , I will contact him to see if he knows of any other distant relatives, (don't fancy my chances though, I vaguely recall going down this path once before and coming up empty).
I also have trouble with my head, I am not completely computor literate and get myself flustered more often than not trying to navigate my way around.
For now I shall have to desist for a couple of days ,as I have to get my head around papers of a different sort (Tax).

Hi Leonie
Do you mean where am I as in where do I live (in Australia) or why am I not answering,( just tuned in).
Henry Shalles Cooper was born in Sydney and died at Market Street, Randwick in Sydney, he was a Sydney City Missionary.
You appear to have had more luck than me, I am still trying to get my head around all the avenues of research and how to interprate some of them.
It would appear I was on the right track though for Eliza, as I have just sent for a marriage certificate for John and Eliza (Glover being the maiden name given on the certificate), I have not received it as yet but your information explains a lot, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
Question ? Where are you, do you live in Australia or England ?
Wouldn't it be lovely if someone else could fill in a few more gaps.
Cheryl.

Sorry i don't have any photos of John Cooper and the information in the bible states that his infant son John was born August 28th 1838 and died March 8th 1839 (interesting) also there is another son of John and Eliza ; Henry Shalles Cooper born January 5th 1843 died March 1st 1928 of whom I am a decendent, Henry married Annie Jane Stevenson June 30th 1875 and they had nine children Henrietta Ellen Blanche Cooper born 1874, Alfred Earnest Cooper 1875-1939, Henry Langley Cooper 1877-1965, Fleeta Eliza Cooper 1878-1961, Annie Amelia Cooper born 1880, Arthur George Cooper born 1882, Ada Bettie Cooper 1884-1971, Archibald John Cooper born 1888 ( Archie went to America and made quite a fortune so i've been told) , Barbara Cooper 1890-1978, I am descendant of Henry Langley Cooper he was my grandfather. Adding to the plot my father was also a twin (an identical one in fact) . All this information is written in the family bible which unfortunately I am not the owner of , my Uncle holds this book and as I arranged a couple of family reunions back in 1985 and 1987 and was doing research back then my Uncle photcopied the pages for me, this was a great relief because it gave me a head start, I have only recently got back into it, and yes you are right this is a great site, otherwise I would still be searching for Eliza's surname and coming up empty.

Hi Leonie
You cant imagine my excitement when i chanced upon this site and discovered your message regarding Captain John Cooper c. 1807 -1852 ,it just so happens this is my great great grandfather whom i have been trying to find further information about.Until i read your message i had no idea of his wifes maiden name or the name of his ship. I do however have his date of birth according to the family bible kept by my ancestors it states John Cooper born at Greenwich, England 10th day of February 1807 ,died at Sydney May the 8th 1852 aged 45years. I would be interested to know if you have more information regarding my ancestors.
