Montgomeryshire / Re: Mary Ellen Lewis b April1842 in Guilsfield area.
« on: Sunday 26 February 23 02:17 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to all these wonderful people who have answered my article.   I've been busy in all free time I've had today reading them all & checking what each one of you has said.   I live in Canada so am out of your time zone.   I'll attempt to answer you 1 by 1.
DUNDEE, they had 3 children I believe, Mary Ellen b 1842 & Sarah b 1854 both in Guilsfield & John who was b in Bangor.
MADDYS52, yes you are correct Mary b 1842 mmn Dicken.
GADGET yes 1841 parents in Broniarth & James is a publican.
Baptism on Mary Ellen is correct.
In 1851 they are in Bangor & in 1861 but James is no longer a publican but a fruit dealer.
I'd love to hear about your Curetons who migrated to the US please.
GADGET again, Yes there are several documents that give her parents as James & Mary & no I have not relied on just the ancestry trees as several of them are incorrect [as usual] I've checked everything out
SANDRA Yes I found Mary Ellen's death cert & it indeed gave the correct parents.
SANDRA again, I don't believe I've found any suitable people on passenger lists beside which I found Mary Lewis died in 1872 aged 57 & was buried on June 4th in Bangor.  James remarried in Oct 1872 to a Margaret Peers in Bangor.  Marriage cert said James widower 53 a fruit dealer & Margaret Peers 43 a widow, father's name John EVANS a cattle dealer.
GADGET you are correct with Mary's death date & James'.
DCB I think what you say is correct .

No time to answer any more of you but will do tomorrow but it will be after lunch with you by the time I get up.

Just to say I found a FT belonging to a Kathleen Willits & heard back from her today & she believes we're both talking about the same lady, but we have to communicate some more yet to establish certainty,
More tomorrow ladies & thanks again for all you efforts.

Montgomeryshire / Mary Ellen Lewis b April1842 in Guilsfield area.
« on: Saturday 25 February 23 01:43 GMT (UK)  »
One of my rellies named Mary Ellen Lewis b in April 1842 & bap 18 April in Guilsfield d/o James Lewis of Broniarth, innkeeper & Mary of Pentre Broniarth Upper who married in Guilsfield in 1836.  Mary Ellen was their first child but I have never been able to find her living with them.   From Family Trees on Ancestry I found her married & living in the US.

According to the 1900 US Federal Census she immigrated to the US in 1848 & she would have only been 6 years old at the time. I've searched passenger lists etc & cannot find her emigrating at all.  At 6 years of age she wouldn't have gone alone would she & why??  It also said she'd lived in the US 52 years so therefore her given age of 58 would be correct.

On the 1920 US census it says she immigrated in 1860 & naturalized in 1890. Have searched but can't find trace of these either.

However she married on 4 December 1864 in Knox, Ohio to a man named Morton Hugh WILLITTS, had several children & the last one was named Edward Cureton Willitts & this really caught my eye as this Mary Ellen's grandmother was Mary Ann Cureton & she had a father & a brother both named Edward Cureton.  So I'm pretty sure this is the Mary Ellen I was searching for BUT can anyone shed light onto her emigrating in 1848 when she was 6???   Any suggestions please as this seems to be quite a conundrum.
Thanks to anyone who replies with any info.

Cheshire / Re: Thomas Boswell m Rachel Firat, Sirat or Pirat?? 1773 in Tarvin.
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
I've been searching whenever I have had spare time & have found Joseph Tarrat of Tarporley & a Joshua m in 1770 to an Ann Hancock in Barthomley  & a Rachel Tarrat buried in Nottingham in 1780 but we know Rachel was m in 1773 so by 1780 would no longer be Tarrat but Boswell.  There were 2 families named Sarrat in the 1500's fathered by either John or Roger of Mouldsworth, Tarvin with numerous children, but no Rachel to be found.  I even tried Parrat & found an Anne P b 1595 in Tarvin d/o John.  Sadly that's all I could come up with.   Anyone with any other ideas, please??  Although they m & d in Tarvin they may not have come from there!  Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions but haven't totally given up but not sure what to do next.  Amberly.

Thanks hanes teulu,  I have had a good look at those with your suggestion & believe it could be a T especially comparing it to the Thomas of the vicar's name & the Thomas of the Church warden at the bottom of the page.   So I'll see what I can find for T this morning & let you know.    I'm in Canada hence the time change!
Thanks again, Amberly.

I understand that & I'm not complaining I just want other people's ideas to see what they think.  Two heads or more are always better than one!   I just don't like giving up because somewhere there may be an answer to it & so I persevere.   So I'll see what I can come up with for Tirat.  I think the 2nd letter is I not E as I believe I can see a dot above it.
Thanks for taking time to write again.

Lots of answers & suggestions, thanks to all of you.
Rosinish, thanks for returning to the initial thread of 4 years ago.  I really like to go back to brick walls & see if I can climb over them sometime, & in this case 4 years, later.
Goldie, like you I went through all the possible letters it could be but to no avail & came to the same conclusion as you that it could have been something quite different.
Garstonite thank you for finding a Rachel Sirat, that was quite a surprise & even more of a surprise that she was from Algeria. I'm disappointed it didn't go far enough back though.  Then the one from FS gives it on the page you referred to as Sirat BUT if you click on similar historic records on the same page it then gives it as Firat!!
So I'm really no further forward than I was 4 years ago but I don't like giving up so no doubt will have another try 4 years from now again!
Once again thank you all for your efforts, much appreciated.     Amberly.

Cheshire / Thomas Boswell m Rachel Firat, Sirat or Pirat?? 1773 in Tarvin.

I can't go any further back in my Tree than this couple above as I can't really read the wife's surname.  Any ideas anyone please?    Also I cannot determine where either of them were born as they had both died before the 1841 census which at least would have told me if they were born in Cheshire.
Thomas' birth date was established from his age at death, aged 79 in 1825 & died as Thomas Boswell of Kelsall.  He married Rachel 25 April 1773 in Tarvin as Thomas Betwizel. Rachel died in 1803 as Rachel Boswell of Tarvin.    They had 5 children I believe.  Sarah born 1773 as Sarah Betwezel dau/of Thomas & Rachel of Kelsall, James Betwesel 1775 but signed his name on his marr cert as James Boswell. Then Thomas 1780, on his marr cert as Thomas Barswell [probably sounded like this when he said it??] but could write & signed it as Boswell. Then Mary b 1783 on birth cert as Bettweasel & lastly Hannah b 1788 as Betweasel.
Also can anyone explain please why Boswell was written in so many different spellings, apart from possibly pronunciation & minister' s spelling???
Any suggestions would be gratefully received to any of this post.    Thanks.     Amberly

England / Re: Intent to marry.

Thank you for your reply but that's for now, I'm interested in the 1700's & why it would take a year later for the marriage to take place??   Back then it wasn't common as far as I can see for that to occur.

England / Intent to marry.
« on: Wednesday 18 March 20 16:42 GMT (UK)  »
Firstly please could someone explain to me why intent to marry papers were written up?  Also the 2 people concerned seemed to be only 16 at the time, could this have been the reason?   They did marry in fact on year later in 1781. Also is there somewhere were one can look these up to read?
Thank you to anyone who can help.
