Argyllshire / Glendaruel House Cowal & Bute area
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 19:44 GMT (UK)  »
I know this is a long shot but here goes. My late grandmother Catherine McColl Stewart (nee Carmichael) was one of the domestic staff at Glendaruel House betwween 1919-1924 (approx). The house was built in 1903 and bought in 1905 by the London surgeon William Harrison Cripps (uncle of Stafford Cripps, the former Chancellor). The house remained in the family till just after WWI. I am hoping somebody out there might - and it's a big 'might' - have some old photos of the family and/or staff taken during the period my grandmother worked there or any other info. of interest.

Argyllshire / What happened to Finlay Jackson after 1871?
« on: Monday 25 February 08 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
Finlay Jackson born c. 1853 in  Ardrishaig. Parents George Jackson (fisherman) and Isabella Mcalpine. Finlay also fisherman. He appears in 1871 Lochgilphead census and then nothing. Maybe he emigrated or drowned at sea, but even then there should have been some sort of paper work, surely. This is one of a few brick walls  that I could really use some help with.

Midlothian / Thomas Hume Plumbers Stafford Street
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any general information about Thomas Hume and Sons of  2a Stafford Street Edinburgh. My great grandfather Alexander Stewart (1867-19250 worked there, possibly as an apprentice in late 1880's/early 1890's before setting up in business for himself on the West coast. I managed via trade directories to establish that Thomas Hume and Sons were still in business till at least the early 1970's. Any info. & photos of business premises etc. would be most helpful.

Argyllshire / First World War Pension records
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
Need help tracing First World War pension/medical records for my grandfather George Jackson Stewart (1898-1964) who was born in Ardrishaig. Served with Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment No S/32166. Had a short spell of service in France. Cannot find details in Ancestry.co.uk's British Army WWI Pension records. In 2000 managed to obtain some other information about my grandfather from records held at Kew (regiment No, service dates and medals awarded etc.). know for certain that he was hospitalised towards end of war (medical discharge 19 May 1919) and received a war pension. Puzzled why relevant records aren't on Ancestry. Would appreciate any help.
