Hi Peter,

No. The 1901 census gives his birth as "abt 1877. Birmingham", while the record of his hanging gives his age as 34, suggesting 1879. I can't find anything else.

By 1901 Frank Greening, reputedly born in Birmingham between 1877 and 1879 (though GRO does not confirm this) was already a prisoner in Winson Green Prison. On 13 August 1913 he was hanged at the same prison for the murder of girlfriend Elizabeth Ellen Hearne. Please can anyone tell me more?

Hi Scobie,

Ok. I live very close to Moseley. I'm not aware of a specidic war memorial in the old village itself though, as you say, there may be something connected to St Mary's Church. During the next few days I'll wander down there and see what I can find.

Regards,

Keith

I have trawled the 1881 census records for all of the names you mention and have found none of them.

I can only assume that they may have been travelling on the day in question and might well have evaded the census altogether.

I'm sorry this is not much help.

Hi Scobie,

Do you know where in Moseley the war memorial is?

We have a constant problem on our tree with people not using the names they wer given ay birth. Despite having a copy of his birth certificate we could not see my grandfather on any census return until he got married. It took a long time to realise that the John shown on the censuses was in fact William John (I later discovered he was known as Jack), both because of the name and the fact that his age was wrong. He suddenly aged 13 years between censuses.
We also have a Frank Leonard who was known as Bob abd a George William known as Mick. Is it any wonder that family history drives us crackers.

It just might pay to contact the archives department at Birmingham Central Library. They may have records or may know where they are held.

Bear in mind that children in care did not always get the best of treatment, so that some organisations now hide behind the current non-disclosure acts in an attampt to avoid providing information. Not long ago I was looking for information on a building used as an orphanage around the time you are interested in. I contacted the organisation concerned, who told me it was 'most unlikely' that it had ever been used by them. Fortunately I had information from the building title deeds and they quickly back-tracked when I was able to tell them exactly when they had occupied it.

Hi,

A quick GRO check shows the birth a John A Robinson registered in Aston, Birmingham in the first quarter of 1921, mother's maiden name Newey. The reference is Volume 6b, Folio 839.

John W Robinson, mother's name Sadler was registered in Birmingham in the second quarter of 1921 (6d 381) and a John Robinson, mother's name Yeomans, in Kings Norton, Birmingham in the fourth quarter (6d 61).

These appear to be the only John Robinsons registered as born in the Birmingham area in 1921.

Regards,

Keith
