I can get over there one day next week, so I'll see what's available.

Thanks again, Genie.

Hi Julia,

I have the same sort of problem. I'm trying to verify the birth of my gg grandfather. I know that there is a birth entry for a James Townsend at St Martins in 1800 from LDS. The problem is that simply having a copy of the record may not prove that this is the right James, so I'm also in two minds.

The problem with the library system as I see it is that once they have your cheque there is no incentive for them to move at a reasonable pace. After all, you're only the customer.

Regards,

Keith

Hi Julia,

I tried to get your parish record entry this morning (along with the one I wanted) but if there is a way to make things complicated our library will find it.

Apparently you have to send in a written or e-mailed request, together with a cheque (not sure how you e-mail a cheque) and they will trouble themselves to sort out the entry some time within the next 20 working days. My belief that I could simply ask and I would receive was met with blank incredulity.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Regards,

Keith

You mean four quid only buys you one entry??? That's outragepus.

My maternal family came from Coventry and I've bought entire books of transcripts for Coventry churches for no more than £4 in the past.

I've takem a mote of what you need. I'll get back to you.

It has just occured t me that the Birmingham  & Midland Societty for Genealogy and Heraldry might have a complete transcript.

www.bmsgh.org

I'll call them first in the morning, before going to the library.

What do you need, Births, marriages, deaths or the whole shooting match - and what period?

I agree, four quid is a bit pricey but have you ever tried making sense of those microfiches? Are they offering a transcript or merely a photocopy of the original?

I need St Martins and am going into the library tomorrow on other business, so will go with freshly printed four pound note in hand.

I'm not even sure the dialect is dying out. I can still make myself entirely incomprehensible to grockles if I have a mind to.

Funny isn't it, how no matter how long we're away, true Devonians always think of the place as home. I get a definite high as soon as I reach somewhere around Newton Abbott. I come from Paignton, all about where all of my mother's family owned hotels or guest houses for many years back in the fifties and sixties. All this is bringing back memories of swims round Paignton pier before going to school in a morning.

I dispute the suggestion that Devon accents are dying out. I was born and raised in South Devon. Even now, after more than 30 years in th Midlands I have no difficulty in understanding the accent whenever I return 'home', though my wife complains that I slip back into the local dialct and accent too easily, so that after a week or so she reckons I sound like someone else entirely.
