Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Parish Registers Birth
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 10:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Kate

The censuses indicate that George was born at Fairlight which is the next parish to Pett.  You need to find someone who can go to Hastings library to look at the baptisms for St Andrews church at Fairlight.

I hope that this helps.

Kind regards

Roger

Hi Chris

Just got back from a few days away.

Thanks for the answers to my request.  Two out of three aint bad.  Mary Gutsell was always going to be difficult.

Kind regards

Hi Joe

That's brilliant.  Thank you so much.  Fred was my great uncle and I always believed that he had died young because the rest of his family remained in the Fairlight area at least at the time of the 1901 census.  I have sent you a PM.

Kind regards

Roger

Hi Everybody

I am looking for Susan Emily Balchin born Brighton 1872 and Fred Thorpe born Fairlight 1878 in the 1901 census.  They married in Brighton later that year.  Susan was a widow.

Thanks in advance.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Charlotte Thorpe 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses

Hi Everyone

I am looking for an ancestor of mine who was born as Charlotte Thorpe in 1816 and died in 1900 at Pett, East Sussex.  In 1881 she was unmarried and living with Henry Smith as his housekeeper at Brede.

Can anyone find her in the 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses?

Thanks in advance.

Roger

Hi Chris

How are you, mate?   It's a while since we met up down in Hastings and I haven't used the Sussex boards much since then because much of my family history research has been recently concentrated on my Staffordshire ancestors.

Thanks for your kind offer to do look ups at ESRO

I hope that you can help me to sort a few problems  identified with my Sussex ancestors.

1. I am looking for the baptism of Mary Gutsell. Probably this took place between 1748 and 1758 at Sedlescombe but could have occurred at Brede or Ewhurst.

2. I have somehow got two baptisms for James Manser Thorpe.  The first is a private baptism at Fairlight on 09 May 1824 and the second is also at Fairlight on 18 September 1831 (James's parents are William amd Ruth).  I think that the first baptism is correct since it corresponds with the months following the birth. Who was baptised at Fairlight on  18 September 1831?

3. James Manser married Harriet Wilson in 1846 and I have two daughters both called Alice.  The first is called Alice Louise is thought to be born at Fairlight about March 1863. The second is Alice Matilda baptised at Fairlight 23 August 1868. Are these both their children?  If so presumably the first one died young so is their a burial?

I hope that you can help.

Thanks in advance.

US Lookup Requests / Re: Death Indexes

Hi Genealiza

Wow!!! How exciting.   This is as good as it gets.  Three married children identified plus two grandchildren who both technically could still be alive.  The obituary is obviously an important document as it may give details of children or even grandchildren.  If you can't access it please let me know how I can pay to get a copy.

I hope that you can find still find more of the children before our luck runs out.

Thanks once again

Kind regards

Roger

Hi Genealiza

What a star you are!!  Several have looked for the family in the 1901 census in the past but none have been successful.  Well done!

I didn't forget Grace. Sadly she died in 1925 and is buried with her parents in Soule cemetery in Auburn NY.

Yes your assumption is correct.  It is the children who had left home in 1920 or 1930 that I am still looking for.  The hope is that I might identify some of their children who theoretically could still be alive and traceable.  One can live in hope!!

Good luck.

Kind regards

Roger
