Tipperary / Help please, Moycarkey baptism, 1858
« on: Friday 24 March 17 07:17 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at the image of the baptism of Mary MAHER, April 4 1858, in the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915

This is what I see:
Mary of Edmond MAHER and Ellen MAHER, Sps: Patrick L???land, Ellen Maher, Tberadora.

My questions are:
Can I assume from this that Ellen's maiden name was MAHER?  The mothers listed in other records on this page are shown with surnames that are different from the father's surname so I assume that the listing on the record is the maiden name.

Because the entry is squashed in it's a bit tricky to sort out -  can I assume that Tuberadora is their residence and that Galbestown belongs to the record above that?

Is it Tuberadora?  This place name is mentioned a page or so earlier in these registers and that's what it looks like but Googlemap doesn't seem to find it for me.  For that matter I can't see Moycarkey either although a Morcarkey National School is shown.  Is there still a church there?  Mary MAHER emigrated to Victoria Australia (I have good information about her from there on) and the informant for her death certificate gave her birthplace as Holy Cross which I see has a very big church. Obviously the information from her baptism is more reliable than that given after her death.

PS Google tells me that there is a Catholic church built early 19th century.

Oh my, PROV what have you done?

PROV has up-dated and modernised its searches so as to make it much trickier for researchers to navigate (for this researcher anyway!)

I've so far only looked at Wills and Immigration records which used to come up with a neat list, all on one page, easy to speed-read and easy to correlate other family members.

Looking for my John MASON as an example it comes up with a snazzy yellow page with about 9 entries on a screen and I've yet to figure out how to find who came with him and others such as other relatives who may have come on the same voyage.  (I do have the info on John MASON; was just using it to see how it works)

On the Wills and Probate page you seem to have to search both sections.

I suppose PROV paid some whiz-kids many $$s to come up with this very eye-catching but very annoyingly inconvenient new way to access their indexes.

Perhaps it's just me  ::) :-[

United States of America / Maximilian BALLARD, immigrant? 1761?
« on: Sunday 05 February 17 04:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following information which I found on FindMyPast in their Record set: United States, Transatlantic Migration.

The record apparently comes from a book:
The Complete Book Of Emigrants In Bondage, 1614-1775, published and the index entry reads

p 81 Ballard, Maximilian. S s sheep at Cwmyoy R Summer 1761. Mo.

I have a short newspaper account of a trial at the Monmouth Assizes (UK) in June 1761 of the conviction of Maximilian Ballard, Mary Thomas and Mary Roberts for sheep stealing.

So I assume that the book entry is for Maximilian BALLARD, convicted of stealing sheep at Cwmyoy (a village near Monmouth) in summer of 1761, with the Mo (last word of the book entry) being short for Monmouth.

How can I find out more - did he actually go to the US? And are there any further records?

Armed Forces / John Jones DYER - chief clerk to the Admiralty, 1857
« on: Monday 30 January 17 06:38 GMT (UK)  »
I realise that this is not actually about the Armed Forces, but rather about the bureaucracy that supports the RN, the Admiralty, so i hope this is the right place to ask.

My 2x great-grandfather, John Jones DYER, was chief clerk to the Admiralty, but seems to have been dismissed in 1857, along with some others holding high positions.

Newspaper reports state:

EXTRAORDINARY DOINGS AT THE ADMIRALTY
The first clerk of the Admiralty, Mr DYER, Mr John BARROW, Mr HAUGHTON and Mr MIDLANE, senior clerks have been dismissed; or, if this term be unpalatable, removed from their situations.  The step taken by the Board is said to be of such extraordinary character that it is scarcely possible to realise the truth. - Evening Paper.

This quote is from John Bull (London, England), Saturday, February 28, 1857, Issue 1,890, p.140, with similar paragraphs in The Standard (London, England), Friday, February 27, 1857, Issue 10154, p.[1] and The Newcastle Journal (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England), Saturday, March 07, 1857

What happened?

Leicestershire / Burial registers - Affid???
« on: Monday 30 January 17 03:31 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at burials in Kirby Muxloe around the 1720s, particularly in 1728/9.  All of the burial records show the date of burial and then a notation which reads Affid or Affid Brought and another date which is usually a week later than the burial date.

What is this annotation, please?

Monmouthshire / Margaret Ballard, b 1748, Cwmyoy, dau of Maximilian BALLARD
« on: Sunday 01 January 17 07:16 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help my find this lady later than 1770 when her child, James BALLARD was baptised in Cwmyoy?  Margaret's father on her baptism record is Maximilian BALLARD, and I believe her mother was Sophia (died 1783, Cwmyoy), but I don't know Sophia's maiden name.

I see two siblings for her, William, b 1750, and Mary, b 1752.

I wonder if she married and would be interested in any information about her.

I am also looking for the death of her father Maximilian BALLARD.

Australia / FamilySearch upgrade
« on: Friday 24 June 16 01:19 BST (UK)  »
Just in case you haven't heard:
The whole FamilySearch website will be undergoing a technical upgrade Monday, June 27th starting at 12:00 am MDT (4pm AEST??) and may be down for up to 24 hours. This is because of a major technical upgrade that will greatly increase the speed and capacity of the website, will affect all functions and areas.

As use has increased dramatically in the past while, there have been slow-downs, page freezes, and other frustrating problems that they hope to eliminate by this change and increased capacity.

Tipperary / DWYER birth 1802?, McCARTHY/CARTHY birth 1804?
« on: Friday 29 April 16 08:21 BST (UK)  »
My 3g grandparents were married in Tipperary parish 1 November, 1835 (from NLI images)  They emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1841.  I have good documentation for them in Australia which consistently list their ages to fit with the above birthdates.

Michael DWYER, died 1884 aged 82 (thus b abt 1802),
place of birth (and marriage): Tipperary, Ireland
parents: John DWYER, farmer and Mary DWYER, formerly RYAN

Ellen/Ellenore DWYER, nee McCARTHY, d 1905 aged 101 (b abt 1804)
place of birth (and marriage) Greenane, Co Tipperary, Ireland
parents: Calawan McCARTHY, farmer and Honora McCARTHY, formerly RYAN
Ellen's maiden name is given as "CARTHY" in the records of baptism of her 3 eldest boys in Tipperary.

As Ellen was still alive and well when Michael died it seems likely that the information given on his death certificate is correct.

The only documents that give different ages are the shipping lists which show that Michael's birthdate would be 1810 and Ellen's 1812.  My DWYERs were bounty (assisted) immigrants so their fares were paid.  Bounty immigrants often tweaked their ages and/or occupations a bit so that immigration requirements were met.  I suspect that is what may well have happened here.  I have looked through the NLI images for baptisms in Tipperary parish in 1810/1811/1812 but could not see either of them.

Any help in locating any early information about their baptisms or their parents would be wonderful.

Apologies for knowing very little about Irish genealogy.  Was there a church at Greenane? I note that the NLI images are for Tipperary parish so would their marriage and children's baptisms (which I have) have been in the town church?
