Australia / (Herbert) Russell Midlane COOMBE alias Russell MIDLANE
« on: Wednesday 25 March 20 07:20 GMT (UK)  »
This man is not my direct ancestor but I find his life interesting, and would like to know about the change in his family circumstances in later life.

He was registered and baptised in Wilton, Wiltshire, as "Midlane Russell COOMBE" in 1840 to John Henry COOMBE and Frances Agnes nee MIDLANE.  I have plenty of information about his parents.  As his father was a clergyman the family moved about a bit - in 1841 at Mere using first name of Russell; 1851 they are in Heworth Yorkshire, and his name is listed as "Russell Midlane COOMBE."

In 1855 he was appointed Master's Assistant in the Royal Navy (named as Russell M COOMBE)

The next sighting I can see is a marriage in Kooringa, South Australia in November 1863 to Bridget Bower, using the name "Herbert Russell Midlane COOMBE" He and Bridget had children who used the surname COOMBE and three of whom were still alive at the death of Bridget in Wentworth NSW, December 1917, according to the obit which makes no mention of a husband.

His youngest child with Brdget is born abt 1868

By about 1886 he begins a family with Margaret MOORE who, by 1897, is using the name Mrs Midlane.  He marries Margaret as "Russell MIDLANE" in Jan 1917 and he gives his status as widower although Bridget doesn't die till December 1919.

I think I have all the details re his children of both families and his wives, so no need to search for them.

What I'd like to know is:
How did he get to South Australia? He had only been taken on by the RN seven years before.
Did the two families and wives know of each other?
The marriage to Margaret was about 30 years after the birth of their first child.  Wondering why as it seems he didn't wait for his first wife to die. (Pure nosiness here!)

There was an earlier thread about this man where it's clear that Herbert Russell Midlane Coombe is the same man as Russell Midlane.

Sorry, a bit long-winded but might fill in some spare time in these days of pestilence.   ::)

United States of America / Maximilian BALLARD - Emigrant in Bondage 1762
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 06:48 BST (UK)  »
Maximilian BALLARD was apparently transported to "America" in 1762 for stealing sheep in Cwmyoy, Monmouthshire (South Wales, UK).

I have a father and a son called Maximilian (various spellings) BALLARD in Cwmyoy at the right time so not sure which of them was the sheep-stealer.  I have a burial in Cwmyoy for a Maximilian but, again, unsure as to which of them it was.

I have no further information after his transportation for the Maximilian who went to America.
There is a reference to him in a Journal of the Illinois Sate Genealogical Society, Quarterly, 1974. The reference is contained in a list of "British Deportees to America 1760-1763.  From this I assume that the fact that this journal was published by an Illinois group doesn't have any bearing on where Maximilian went.

Australia / Ancestry??
« on: Saturday 13 April 19 07:18 BST (UK)  »
Is it only me or is anyone else having huge problems with Ancestry searches?

For example - using information from a current thread Henry Wheeler 1798 - After Transportation did he return to England? I put into the usual "search all records"  his name, date of birth and marriage.  Up comes some info in the "Records" section - showing that there are 733 items in
Public Member Photos & Scanned Documents and 9 items in Maps, Atlases & Gazetteers.

Clicking on the "Categories"  only brings up links to the information already cited in the "Records" section with none of these links remotely connected with the chap I'm searching for.

No links to BMDs, censuses, convict info, immigration records etc etc, and no way I can find to access any of these.

 ??? ??? ??? ???

Is anyone else having this problem which I've had for a couple of weeks now?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Joseph Kitley undecipherable surname
« on: Friday 15 February 19 07:36 GMT (UK)  »
This snip is from the marrige register of St Mary Mary-le-bone for Samuel DYER and Maria TARN, 6 March 1827

I am hoping someone can help me with the surname of the male witness which looks as though it may be Jones, but I'm not sure.  His forenames seem fairly clear as "Joseph Kitley"

Thanks, Judith

Kent / Seager/Allen marriage, Sundridge, 1760
« on: Thursday 17 January 19 06:23 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if there is an on-line image for this marriage. I am particularly interested in any clues as to the bride's status, groom's occupation, any witnesses and parents of either.

The only information I have is a transcription from FindMyPast.
29 December, 1760 at Sundridge, by Licence
Richard SEAGER, residence: Greenwich,
Eliz ALLEN

Thank you , Judith

Monmouthshire / Cwmyoy - memorials
« on: Monday 07 January 19 06:44 GMT (UK)  »
My husband has ancestors who lived in Cwmyoy and wondering if there are any memorials/graves still readable for any of them.  I think at least one member of the family had a mill, or worked at a mill so not sure if they would have had enough money to put up memorials.

Maximilian BALLARD,
died August 1781, burial noted in parish register
His wife: Sophia BALLARD, d January 1783, burial noted in parish register

This couple had three children (that I know of ) with baptisms all recorded in parish register.  I do not know what happened to them.:
Margaret b 1748 - had a child James BALLARD, baptised Cwmyoy 1770, cannot find a marriage or a death for Margaret.

William, b 1750, possibly died before/around 1819 as I have papers granting administration of the estate of a William BALLARD, July 1819

Mary, b 1752. - no information after the baptism record

John BALLARD, "farmer of Cwmyoy". Probably the John BALLARD buried Cwmyoy 1830.  Noted in administration papers for William (above) as his son so John was obviously alive in 1819.  I have no other information about him.

England / Does 'kinsman' equal 'in-law'? Richard SEAGER and James AGUTTER
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 06:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have the will of James AGUTTER, fellmonger of Deptford, written in 1759 in which one of the executors is named as "my kinsman Richard SEAGER".  The will was proved in 1763 and administration granted to the other executor "my brother, William BROWNING" (which is also odd given the surname of the deceased).  I cannot make out exactly what is said about Richard SEAGER in the 'proving' section of the will - shown in attachment.

I can only find very scant details about Richard SEAGER.  His children were baptised between 1765 and 1776 at Butt Lane Independent, Deptford, with his residence given at the time as Greenwich Rd, occupation: tanner.  His wife Elizabeth died in 1788, described as a widow so he died between about 1776 and 1788.  I believe his wife may be the sister of James AGUTTER thus my query as to whether the description of Richard SEAGER as 'knisman' may be helpful here.

I can't find a marriage or burial for him and a few possible births but nothing I can verify.

Australia / Patrick DWYER abt 1818, Tipperary; died Moora, near Rushworth 1882
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 06:46 GMT (UK)  »
Previous thread:

Many thanks to ChristineR who has helped me enormously with my DWYERs and pointed me in the direction of this Patrick.

Trying to find more about this Patrick DWYER in hopes that he may be a brother of Michael DWYER, who was born 1802 Tipperary, and died 1884, Barfold, Victoria.  Michael emigrated with his wife and three children into Port Philip per ship Lysander, 1841.  I am not seeking information re Michael after his arrival.

Patrick's death certificate has these details:
1882, reg Rushworth #3201i
Died 3rd January 1882, Moora, Shire of Waranga, County of Rodney
PATRICK DWYER, Farmer, 63
PARENTS: JOHN DWYER, Farmer, MARY Dwyer, formerly RYAN - Michael DWYER's parents are listed the same as this on his death cetificate.
INFORMANT: MATTHEW DWYER, Son, Moora
Buried: 5th January 1882, Rushworth cemetery, Witnesses: Matthew Dwyer, Patrick Linnott?
Born Tipperary Ireland, 35 years in Victoria
Married in Melbourne, aged 25 years, to Ann Lynch.
Issue: Matthew dead; John dead; Mary Ann 32, James 31, John 29, Matthew 27, David 25

I cannot find a marriage for Patrick and Ann, and I'm only seeing one child's birth registration:
Victoria 1848, #41933
Matthew DWYER, parents Patrick DWYER, Ann Lynche

Patrick's will leaves all to wife Ann for her lifetime and then to the three sons, Matthew, James and John (no mention of Mary Ann or David).  I note on the probate papers and will that both Patrick and Ann made a cross rather than signing.

There is a photo of the grave at Rushworth with death of Ann DWYER, aged 62, noted as 16? Sept,  1899.  Another grave in the RC section is for James DWYER, aged 57, d 17 illegible month 1909

There's not much visible for Patrick and his family. He's certainly living in the same area as Michael and has the same parent names.  Trove doesn't seem to have any mention of his death, but dopes have a short obit for Ann

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/169719086 - 16 Sept 1899
Two old colonists lately died at Rushworth.
One was Mrs. Dwyer, who came to the colony in 1841. With her late husband, she was well-known in the Ovens, Wangaratta, and Kilmore districts prior to the discovery of gold, when they went to Bendigo, finally settling at Rushworth in 1856.

None of which helps me searching for some parentage/origin/immigration for Patrick!
Too many DWYERs called Patrick, Michael, James, John ;D
