The Common Room / Baptism before birth???
« on: Saturday 30 July 22 18:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm currently researching a friend's tree and have come across an illegitimate family.

A 'housekeeper' was living with the assumed father - certainly for the younger children - and later married him in 1888.

I am linking into a daughter, Ada, whose birth was registered in the December quarter of 1884 with the GRO, under her mother's surname of Varney.
This same lady appears in the 1939 register with a listed birth date of 17th September 1884.

However, there is also a baptism for her on 13th April 1884 - right name, right location, only mother listed on the baptism record.

Can anyone offer any explanation for this? She was born in a small village in Northamptonshire, and the names are not common ones.

Nottinghamshire / Denys/Denis Harpham ca.1680 - Tuxford?
« on: Monday 25 July 22 23:20 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,

I am tracing a friend's family tree and have arrived back as far as 1699, with Benjamin Harpham baptised to Denys Harpham in Tuxford.  I believe this Benjamin to be the one who married Ann Cowper in Alfreton in 1723.

I am interested in finding more out about Denys Harpham.  He appears on trees as being born around 1680 and married to an Elizabeth Bristowe, but I have seen no records to back this up.  I believe he also had three further sons: Thomas 1702, William 1705 and David 1709.

Does anyone have access to any records relating to Denys?  I would be very interested in any further info on him.

Many thanks.

Derbyshire / John Annable/Annabell 1831 - Belper - mother?
« on: Saturday 23 July 22 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a John Annable b.c. 1831 in Belper.  He married Mary Anne Harrison.

I am looking for his mother.  In 1851, the family group was as follows:

John Annabell, Head, Wid, 48, Joiner, Leek Nottinghamshire
John Annabell, Son, S, 20, Joiner, Belper Derbyshire
Richard Barks, Son in law, 28, Labourer, Ripley Derbyshire
Elizabeth Barks, Son in law's wife, 22, Belper Derbyshire
Hannah Annabell, Daughter, 19, Belper Derbyshire

HO107/2144 F737 P12

Can anyone find a baptism for John?
Perhaps a marriage for his parents?

Any help would be gratefully received!

Many thanks.

Peeblesshire / Thomas Gibson - Innerleithen
« on: Sunday 19 June 22 15:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm not really sure what I'm asking for here, as I have a tenuous link further down the line and the story starts south of the border in South Shields.

I have found Thomas Gibson who was married to Isabella Hogg in 1797 in South Shields.  They went on to have several children - I have found baptisms of two of them - Andrew 14/07/1806 and Jane 11/01/1803.  These took place in the New Presbyterian Church in South Shields.  I cannot find a baptism for daughter Isabella Gibson b.circa 1801 South Shields - she is potentially the mother of George Gibson, who was baptised in 1823 - my 3xGt Grandfather.

Thomas Gibson and Isabella Hogg had the following children born in South Shields that I know of:

Janet Gibson 1799
Thomas Gibson 1800

Isabella Gibson 1801
Jane Gibson 1802
Andrew Gibson 1806

William Gibson 1809
Margaret Gibson 1814
Anthony Gibson 1816
John Gibson 1821

The siblings in bold were living together, unmarried, between 1841 and 1861.

On Jane's baptism record, it states: Jane Gibson, born December 14th 1802, baptised January 11th 1803.  Daug of Thomas Gibson a native [of] Innerl[e]ithen by his wife Isabella Hogg a native of So Shields.

Which leads me here.  Thomas Gibson.  Native of Innerleithen.
Any information about him would be great, just in case.

A DNA match would be even better!!  ;D

Hi all,

I am on the look out for the father of William Debenham, born ca.1813 in Hartest, Suffolk.  He married Hannah Beeton in 1837.

I know I could get the certificate, but wondered whether there are any other records that may help before I do.  To say William Debenham is a distant 'relative' is an understatement (either father in law of 2nd cousin 5 times removed or uncle of wife of 2xGt Grandfather) so I am loathe to spend a lot out.  However, William will join the whole picture together after going right round the houses from another one of my 'step' lines.

Any help on this would be gratefully received.  A baptism would be helpful, too.

Many thanks,
Emma

The Common Room / Reverend Archibald Stobo...or not?? Scotland to America
« on: Wednesday 16 February 22 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
OK, so this spans the Atlantic Ocean and I'm fearful that I may never get the answers, but here goes...

Reverend Archibald Stobo emigrated to America and arrived there, with his wife Elizabeth Park, on 31st December 1699.  He was a founder of the Presbyterian church in South Carolina and his descendants had illustrious political and military careers throughout history.

People have Archibald's dates as 1670-1737/1740.  He achieved an MA from Edinburgh University in 1697.  His birthplace is given by researchers as Edinburgh or Stobo Castle, Peebleshire.  This is where I come in.  I have an Archibald Stobo, born 1669 to James Stobo and Christian Lawrie, and baptised at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire.

Could this be the same Archibald who became the Reverend?  Most people have no parents for him, others have linked him to a John Stobo as a father, but with no evidence.

This is quite a big one - Theodore Roosevelt was a direct descendant of Archibald's - his 4xGt Grandson, meaning I would also link in here too...IF I can ever find confirmation one way or the other!

Any help would be gratefully received!

Essex Lookup Requests / Henry Warner - ca. 1822 Great Dunmow - baptism
« on: Sunday 06 February 22 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am on the look out for a baptism record for Henry Warner, born about 1822 in Great Dunmow.  Henry is a new addition to my tree - he was my 4xGt Uncle, if the connection is correct.  Henry had a long military career.

On his marriage certificate to Martha Chary/Cherry in 1848, his father is listed as John Warner.

People have linked Henry to John and Sarah Warner.  If anyone could find a record to back this up, I'd be most grateful!

Many thanks,
Emma ;)

Hertfordshire / Sarah Dudmish ca.1826 - Barley, Royston
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Not my tree, but I'm after anything after 1851 for Sarah Dudmish.

She was born to William (ca.1807-1837) and Lydia (nee Clibbins ca.1806-1858) Dudmish and was baptised on 28th January 1827 at St John of Jerusalem, South Hackney. (Bear with me).

Mother Lydia married for the third time to John Chuck (ca. 1805-1874) on 1st October 1844 in Barley, Hertfordshire.  In 1851, they were here:

Barley

John Chuck, Head, 44, Woodcutter, Barley Herts.
Lydia Chuck, Wife, 44, Barley Herts.
Maria Chuck, Daughter, 18, Barley Herts.
Sarah Dudmish, Daughter, 24, Hackney

HO107; Piece: 1707; Folio: 390; Page: 2

I can find nothing more about Sarah beyond this point.  I wasn't quite sure which board to post on, but since this is the last sighting of her, I figured I'd stick to Hertfordshire.  If anyone could help, that would be fantastic!

Many thanks,
Emma

World War One / 8th Bn Lincolnshire Regiment - 26th August 1917
« on: Monday 29 November 21 20:14 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening everyone,

I am looking at a soldier - 13090 - who died on 26th August 1917. The death is listed as 'accidental', so I am wondering whether there are any diary entries or further information out there that will tell me what was happening on that day.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Emma  ;)
