Essex Lookup Requests / George Copsey 1801-1854 - Tilbury
« on: Monday 29 November 21 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening everyone,

I am on the lookout for the parents of George Copsey, born c.1801 in Tilbury.  (He is down on the 1851 census as being born in Giberalter Silver Hill ?)

I am not technically related to George (he was the great grandfather of the husband of my great, great aunt...) but would like to tie the Essex Copseys in with the Suffolk ones on my tree.

If anyone can help, please let me know!

Many thanks,
Emma  ;)

Hi all,

My 3xGt Grandmother Sarah Palmer had an illegitimate son, George, born in Frome in 1837.

I believe George was staying with his uncle and aunt Charles and Elizabeth Palmer in 1851 in Shoreditch, Middlesex.

By 1861, he was an AB in the Royal Navy, on the vessel Racoon off Mount Carmel Coast of Syria.  He is listed as 'married'.

In 1871, George was on the Princess Charlotte (I) in Hong Kong Harbour.  By now he was a Gunner 2nd Class.  He is still listed as married.

I'm at a loss for 1881, but in 1891 he is at 42 Johnston Terrace, Stoke Damerel, Devon.  He is listed as a Retired Gunner RN.  He is living with his wife, Mary, who was born about 1839 in Lostwithiel, Cornwall.  This is the ony sighting of her that I have, so far.

Is anyone able to find Mary on any other census records?  Any sight of a marriage out there anywhere?  It would be great to find out more!

Many thanks,
Emma

Norfolk / Quartina Marshall - c 1680 - Witton?
« on: Monday 17 May 21 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have recently discovered my 7 x Gt Grandmother, Quartina Marshal(l).  She married Thomas Chapman on 10th June 1703 in Witton, Norfolk.  She married again to Richard Mapes on 24th September 1715, after Thomas Chapman died the year before.

I am yet to find anything about Quartina's parents and siblings.  Could anyone please see if they can discover anything?

Many thanks,
Emma

Suffolk / Wordley 1600s - Glemsford
« on: Saturday 08 May 21 18:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have Roger Wordley, b. 1640 in Glemsford to George Wordley and Alice.  I can find no other children.

There is a marriage of a Georgius Wordley to a Margaretam Symondes on 12 October 1624.  There are several children baptised to them:

Elizabetha 1628
Margeria 1631
Radus. 1633
Georgius 1636

The timing would fit for George to have married a second time.  If anyone can find a death for Margaret, or a marriage for George to an Alice, I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks,
Emma

Hi all,

I am revisiting a friend's tree again.  I am still on the look out for the Irish roots of Patrick Loughrey (or various) and his wife Sarah.  I have no details of Patrick at all; Sarah was born in Ireland around 1798 and died in Whitehaven in 1853, aged 55.

This is the family on the early census records:

1841 - New Houses, Front Row, St Bees, Whitehaven

Sarah Loughrey, 40, Ireland
Daniel Loughrey, 23, Carpenter, Ireland
Patrick Loughrey, 18, Coal Miner, Yes
Mary Loughrey, 16, Yes
Charles Loughrey, 14, Yes
John Loughrey, 10, Yes

HO107/158 F29 P2

1851 - 4 Front Row, Preston Quarter, Whitehaven
Sarah Lockery, Head, W, 52, Coal Miner's Widow formerly housekeeper Ireland
Patrick Lockery, Son, Un, 28, Coal Miner, Whitehaven
Mary Lockery, Daughter, Un, 25, Nurse, Whitehaven
John Lockery, Son, Un, 20, Coal Miner, Whitehaven

HO107/2437 F175 P1

Sons Daniel and Charles both died in 1848 in a mining explosion.

I'm interested in finding out more about father Patrick and mother Sarah.  If anyone possibly has information about where they came from in Ireland, that would be fantastic.

Many thanks,
Emma

Durham / George Gibson b abt 1822-3 South Shields - getting further back
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 11:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have been in pursuit of the Gibsons for some time now and haven't been able to get further back.

20th February 1842
Parish of Jarrow in the county of Durham
George Gibson, Minor, Batchelor, Waterman, South Shields
Groom's Father: Charles Gibson, Waterman
Mary Ann Wake, Full age, Spinster, South Shields
Bride's Father: John Wake, Tailor/Sailor
Witnesses: John Wake & William Grieves

I fear the father 'Charles Gibson' is a red herring, unless anyone can find me any records that say differently.

According to the 1851 census, George Gibson was 28, so born 1822-23.  The only baptism I can find is as follows:

16th November 1823 St Hilda's, South Shields
George Gibson, son of Isabella Gibson (single woman)

I have come across this family group:

1851
East Holborn, South Shields
Thomas Gibson, Head, 51, Grocer
Andrew Gibson, Brother, 44, ??
Janet Gibson, Sister, 52
Isabella Gibson, Sister, 49
Jane Gibson, Sister, 47

All born South Shields

HO107; Piece: 2400; Folio: 241; Page: 14

1841 West Holborn, South Shields
Thos Gibson, 40, Green Grocer, Y
John Gibson, 20, ??
Andrew Gibson, 30, ??
Jennett Gibson, 40
Isabella Gibson, 36

 HO107; Piece: 297; Book: 15; Folio: 42; Page: 16

At this moment in time, I have no idea if this is even the right family for George Gibson, let alone Isabella.  Any help or suggestions for other links would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Emma
