London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Criminal and/or Prison Records?
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 01:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just hit a gold mine in the 1911 census.

I need some help tracking down criminal records and prison records.

By using the original record, ie family schedule rather than the transcript, it now looks like my ancestor, John WHITLEY was in HM Parkhurst during the taking of the 1911 Census.

His wife filled out his info and put a note about him being there. One of the docs, there was alot of extra info on the original document that was not included in the transcript, including three children that I didn't have any other record of and had never heard of before (I now have a hint of where my inability to fill in forms correctly comes from, which in this case is a blessing).

My dear great, great grandmother had included deceased members of the family on the page and then crossed them out. There is no guarantee of this stroke of luck for everyone, but you never know.

So now I would like to find out the when, where and why of his incarceration. The family are living in Edmonton, so it's likely that's where he was arrested.

I've never had to do any criminal searches before so I'm totally in the dark.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Michelle

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Sarah Ann LUCAS/COSTER/WHITLEY - 1881 Census
« on: Monday 06 October 08 09:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm having trouble tracking down Sarah Ann COSTER (nee LUCAS) in the 1881 census.

Sarah Ann LUCAS was born about 1853 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. However, each census on which she appears has a different birthplace (1861 -Birmingham, 1871 - Newbold, Warwickshire, 1881 - not located yet, 1891 - Bretby Estate, Derbyshire and 1901, Cornwall).

On 2 April, 1871 I believe that Sarah Ann is resident in the Union Lane Workhouse, Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. Listed with her is a 1 month old called Charles LUCAS. She is unmarried, a pauper whose previous profession is listed as General Domestic Servant. At this time, her parents and siblings are listed as living at East Barnet. This proximity leads me to believe that I've got the right Sarah Ann LUCAS.

On 20 Jul 1873, in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England, she married Henry COSTER and had three children, George Henry COSTER, Alfred John COSTER and James COSTER. Their first son was born in New Barnet, but the last two were born in Southgate, London, indicating that the family had moved during this period. In Sep 1877 Henry COSTER died.

I've been unable to find Sarah Ann LUCAS on the 1881 census. However, I have found a Charles COSTA (10 yrs), George COSTA (6 yrs) and Alfred COSTA (4 yrs) who are resident in the Edmonton Union School. All of this would seem to indicate that Sarah and her young family fell on hard times after the death of Henry and that the children were placed in the Union School while Sarah and her youngest son resided somewhere else, possibly her working in service somewhere.

In 1891 and 1901 she is living in Edmonton.

I've tried everything I can to track her down and would appreciate any assistance anyone can give me!

Cheers,
Michelle

Family History Beginners Board / How Many Pages - National Archives Document?
« on: Sunday 31 August 08 09:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've found a possible record relating to an ancestor. I'd like to purchase a copy but I'm unsure of how many pages the document is. At $6AU a page, I'd like some idea of how many pages before I order.

The record is:

National Archives - UK - C 13/313/15 (part of document C 13/313)

Scope and content    [W1830 B16].
Barclay v Billinge. Bill and two answers.
Plaintiffs: Robert Barclay and others.
Defendants: Edward John Handley, Mary Ann Lodge, John Nathaniel Billinge and wife (Mary Billinge) and Algernon Robert Turnbull.
Original Bill hilary 1814 plaintiff's name Handley.
JMP
Covering dates    1830

Is there any way of finding out how big a document is (other than emailing and asking)? If asking is the only way, who do I contact?

Cheers,
Michelle

England / 1881 Census - Issues With Specific Surnames?
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 03:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've been trying to find some missing people in the 1881 Census. I thought it was just me that I couldn't find them. When I searched the census records online I noticed something odd. For this specific surname, Canet, there are numerous entries (including the people I am looking for) in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901. But for 1881 I can literally only find 3 people. I checked on FindMyPast and in 1881 only one person comes up!

I can understand specific individuals being missing from any given census, but I find it hard to believe that every person by that name (except for 3) were not home or missing for some other reason from the 1881 census. Is there some known issue with this census?

Cheers,
Michelle

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1881 Census - Margaret CANET
« on: Monday 14 July 08 04:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I'm trying to track down a missing census entry for Margaret CANET b. 1851 St James, London.

She is the daughter of Zacaharias Theophile CANET and Margaret TURNBULL.

I've found her in 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901.

Margaret CANET was born in 1851 in St James, London, England. In the 1861 census she is listed with the family of uncle Arthur Willesley TURNBULL at 95 Beresford St, St Mary Newington, Southwark, Surrey, England.

In 1871 she is living at Hyde Garden's Clarendon Village, Eastbourne, Sussex, England. This appears to be some sort of small boarding school. The Head of the household is Mary B Jenkins, a Schoolmistress and her sister, Emma Jenkins also a school mistress. All other occupants of the house are female boarders or teachers, governess or scholars. Margaret may be been sent here not only to get an education but to be trained as a teacher.

1881 missing.

In 1891 she is living at 2 Albert Terrace, Camberwell, London, England with her mother. She is listed as a Teacher Languages & Painting Music. In 1901 she is still living at 2 Albert Terrace, Camberwell, London, England but the home now appears to belong to her brother, Theophile. Her profession has also changed to that of Silk Maker.

Margaret died in Sep 1907 in Camberwell, London, England.

It is possible that she was outside London in 1881. If this is the case, I have no idea where to start except that in 1881 her sister, Honorine, also a teacher is residing at 155 Oxford Rd, Habergham Eaves, Burnley, Lancashire.

Any help would be gratefull received.

Cheers,
Michelle

Australia / Thomas BLANDTHORN - Chester, England to Victoria, AU
« on: Tuesday 08 July 08 05:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I'm trying to find out when Thomas George BLANDTHORN(E) b. 1830 in Chester, England came to Victoria, Australia. He married Sarah Ann MUNRO in Collingwood, Vic, Au in 1852, so he must've come out some time before then.

I'm also interested when Sarah Ann MUNRO came out. She was born in 1837 and came from London.

The family seems to have been based in the Sandhurst/Bendigo area and there were a number of children (born in Australia).

I've checked the online passenger records that I could find but I haven't been able to track them down.

Cheers,
Michelle

and

Philip CANET b. 1847 (St Catherines' March qtr 1847)

Catherine Honorine CANET

Catherine mostly went by her middle name, Honorine (also spelt Honerine) in following Census'.

In 1861 Honorine is listed at:

In 1881 she is listed at:

Her brother Philip is also missing from 1871.

Any assistance in locating these people will be gratefully appreciated.

Hi,

I'm trying to find Robert CANET in the 1851 Census. Robert was born in 1845, St George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England. He would've been about 6 in the 1851 Census.

The rest of his family are:

HO107/1484  Folio 123 Page 33

8 Air Street, Westminster St James, Westminster, Middlesex

Theophile Canet 38
Margaret Canet 42
Philip Canet 4
Theophile Canet 2
Catherine Wakeford (Servant) 16

I've checked the various spellings for the surname that have been used in the various transcriptions (Cauet, Canal, Canut) but I can't find him anywhere.

The family seems to have a tradition of sending the children to board for their education.

In the same 1851 Census, his sister, Catherine Honorine, is listed at:

HO107/1635 F 203 P 31

Belle Vue House, Waterloo Place, Hastings All Saints, Hastings, Sussex

Catherine H(onorine) Canet 9 Boarder/Scholar

So it's possible he is living with another family but I can't find it anywhere (checked all the available online census locations - Ancestry, Origins etc).

In the 1861 Census he is listed with the rest of the family:

RG9/339 Folio 53 Page 15

22 Lorrimore St, Walworth, Newington St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey

Margaret Canet 53
Robert Canet 15
Phillip Canet 14
Theophile Canet 12

After this, he moved to Australia. So I am keen to track him down in the UK while he was there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Michelle
