Hi All,

I'm hoping some one might be able to give me some ideas. I'm trying to find the death date of Zacharias Theophile CANET b circa 1813 in France. The family were living at 8 Air St, Westminster St James, Middlesex, England in the 1851 Census. His profession is listed as tailor.

After this date, Zacharias Theophile CANET disappears from the records. I have been unable to find any further trace of him in census records or trace of his death. The last of his children was born in 1851 which would indicate that this is when he "disappeared".

There is a death for Theophile CANET - Sept 1848 District 5 Sept Q 1848 St Georges Hanover Square Vol 1 page 37 but this is I believe his son (who was born in 1843 - St Catherine Index Dec qtr 1843).

Family "history" says that he died of yellow fever. One version was that he went to Portugal to recover but died. Another is that he died in London after catching the disease from cloth imported from Brazil.

I think the truth lies somewhere in between. I believe he may have been a cloth merchant who travelled to Portugal to buy cloth and caught yellow fever there (which was a regular occurrance in many of the sea ports at the time) and then died.

I've checked just about every online index available (including British Overseas Deaths) but I haven't been able to turn anything up. I've also tried many variations on the spelling of the last name, again not luck.

The other possibility is that he didn't die but infact abandoned the family. There is a record on IGI for a marriage between Theophille CANET and Clotilde GUERGUIN who had a boy Gustave Alfred CANET 8/12/1872 at Meurthe-et-moselle, Andilly, France.

Now this would tie in somewhat as Andilly was a major linen producing area in this time.

I suppose I am looking for ideas of where else to look in the UK or if I missed anything obvious.

Cheers,
Michelle

Donegal / LOOKUP Request - Parish Records - HAMILTON Family of Killybegs
« on: Thursday 26 June 08 04:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I’m looking for information on the Hamilton Family of Killybegs, associated with Fintra House. There are many Hamilton families in the area and I believe I may be descended from this one associated with this house/estate.

I’ve been told by various people that the family is well documented but I haven’t been able to track anything down. I do have a copy of this families family pedigree as lodged at the National Archives but it doesn’t got into detail for the line I require.

There are a couple of self-published local histories that may contain information but I haven’t been able to access them (Conaghan, Charles History and antiquities of Killybegs, Donegal Democrat, Ballyshannon, 1975. and Conaghan, Pat Bygones: New Horizons on the History of Killybegs, Killybegs, 1989).

My connection would be via the daughter of James HAMILTON and b. 1772 – d. 1813) and Elizabeth JOHNSTON/JOHNSON (b. 1756 –d. 1833). Her name was given as Sarah Gantley/Gaunlet Amelia HAMILTON. She was born in 1775 in Killybegs. Here family were Church of Ireland.

The G names sounds quite odd for a girls name (unless it’s some sort of family name). I believe it might be Gwendoline/Gwendolyn. One family legend is that the O’Donnell’s are related to someone called Lady Gwendoline Hamilton. This might be how this legend came about.

I am unable to check birth records (Donegal is not the Irish Family History Foundation website). I believe the only way to find this information is to do a parish register lookup?

Sarah was supposedly disowned by her family after she married her fathers Catholic estate manager, James Lewis O’DONNELL. I don’t know when or where these two were married. At some stage just before the birth of their first child in about 1810, they moved to Tyrone. I’ve been unable to find a marriage record for them there so I suspect they were married in Donegal. I don’t know what Church they were married in, for while she was disowned for marrying a Catholic, the children all appear to have been brought up Protestant.

The information I am after:

1)   Sarah’s birth details (date, place etc) - b. 1775 in Killybegs C of Ireland
2)   Confirmation of Sarah’s parents names
3)   Hints to any possible siblings of Sarah’s (her obit mentions she is the youngest daughter).
4)   Marriage date/location for James HAMILTON and Elizabeth JOHNSTON/JOHNSON although it is possible he was married to a Lucy MORRISON at some stage (not sure if before or after this marriage).
5)   Marriage date/location for Sarah HAMILTON and James Lewis O’DONNELL some time before 1810 (give or take a few years!) possibly in Killybegs.

Sorry to post so many requests but I think all the information would be in the same location. I’d be more than happy to have any one of the questions answered.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Michelle (in Australia)
