World War One / WW1 - AIF - Sailing Dates? - 25 Nov 1916
« on: Thursday 12 June 14 06:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My local historical society (Stockton Historical Society Inc - NSW, Australia) has a major project underway to identify 18 men in a photo frame which was donated to the society.

We had no information on the men when we got the frame but have so far managed to identify two men.

On the back of one photo is the following information:

"Sailing on the 25th Nov 1916"

Does anyone know of a site which lists sailing dates for military transports or units for the AIF?

I realise this would be in the nominal rolls but I'd like to narrow it down if possible!!

Cheers,
Michelle

Australia / William Henry Taylor WILKES - London to Hunter Valley, NSW
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 03:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm following up information about:

William Henry Taylor WILKES - born 17 Jan 1821, Southwark London came to Australia on the Lady Raffles in 1839 with his brother Thomas, father Thomas and mother Ann. They moved to the Hunter Valley around Stroud and Dungog.

His marriage index is:

V1851317 80/1851 WILKES WILLIAM H T MCKINNON FLORA QA

What I am trying to find is what the "T" in his name stands for? Does anyone have the full certificate or transcription of his marriage? Does the T stand for Taylor?

Cheers,
Michelle

Essex Lookup Requests / Any SAPSFORD Marriages in 1840's - Great Hallingbury??
« on: Monday 28 April 14 13:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've searched "England, Essex Parish Registers, 1538-1900." Index at FamilySearch for all SAPSFORD marriages in Great Hallingbury.

Of course the dates I want seem to be missing! I can find multiple births and deaths for this period, but no marriages.

Would someone be able to check and let me know if there are any SAPSFORD marriages in Great Hallingbury in the 1840's? I'm trying to work out if there is a gap in the index or in the registers themselves.

I've checked the known issues for these registers at FamilySearch and nothing is mentioned.

I don't want to pay for access to the registers if what I need is missing.

Thanks in advance,
Michelle

Hi,

I'm looking for information on my g grandfather, John WHITLEY.

He was from Edmonton, and on 13 Nov 1891 he was admitted to the North London Certified Truant And Industrial School, High Street, Walthamstow.

Herts Records Office: ADMISSION REGISTER OF THE NORTH LONDON CERTIFIED TRUANT AND INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, HIGH STREET, WALTHAMSTOW. Reference ACC 2914 covering the period September 1891 to April 1899.

The National Archives Site has this: Pishiobury Approved School, Sawbridgeworth [formerly known as North London Truant School, North London Industrial School and Northcott Approved School]: records, 1884-1962 [Acc 2914]

The records are apparently held at the Herts Record Office.

I have a basic transcription of the register entry:

No. of Child on the School Register - 1421
Surname - WHITLEY
Given Name - John
Age on Admission - until the age of - 8-14
When Admitted  - 13/11/1891
Name and Address of Parents, Step Parents or Guardians:
John & Sarah Whitley 23 Eastbournia Terrace, Town Road, EDMONTON

Apparently, the following additional information is available in the register but hasn't been transcribed:

  • Previous Character
    Parents Occupation
where & when the child was ordered to be detained

If anyone is heading to the offices, I would love to get the details of the three categories listed above.

Cheers,
Michelle

Hi,

Yes, the names are correct!!

I'm looking for the marriage of John SAPSFORD b. Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex c. 1803 to Elizabeth SAPSFORD b. 1808 Great Hallingbury, Essex. I would estimate based on birthdates of children the marriage is around 1828/1829.

Not sure where the marriage took place. Could be either village. All their children were born in Great Hallingbury.

Source of wife's maiden name is birth certificate of their daughter, Elizabeth (b. 21 Mar 1843) which is listed the mother as Elizabeth SAPSFORD formerly SAPSFORD.

Since there are a large number of SAPSFORD families in this and surrounding areas, I believe it is her maiden name and they are distant relatives, rather than this being her married name and she is remarrying.

William SAPSFORD 1829 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England
John SAPSFORD 1838 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England
Samuel SAPSFORD 1840 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England
Elizabeth SAPSFORD 21 Mar 1843 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England
Emily SAPSFORD 1844 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England
George SAPSFORD 1848 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England
Jemima SAPSFORD 1850 in Great Hallingbury, Essex, England

All help gratefully received and appreciated!!

Cheers,
Michelle

Hello All,

Does anyone have access to "Brewers in Hertfordshire" by Allan Whitaker?

I'm looking on information on Stephen BOSWELL and his wife Sarah who in 1871 was listed as Beerhouse keeper. Information from National Probate Calendar and the web indicate it was at the "Jolly Bargeman".

There are two entries in the book that might have info:

Jolly Barge Man - Cheshunt, Herts p. 152

Jolly Bargeman - Ware, Herts p. 126

If anyone has access to the book, could you let me know if anyone of interest is listed? It will cost me a fair bit to get the book on inter-library loan, so I'd like to know if it's worth it before I incur the cost!!

Cheers,
Michelle

The Common Room / Help with Criminal Records? WHITLEY Family
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 01:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have two ancestors, a father and son, who both may have served time in gaol. However, I am having trouble with both of them.

The first one, John Whitley (b. 1851 Stroud, Middlesex), is serving time in HMP Parkhurst on the night of the 1911 Census. My problem with him is that I can't find out where, when and what he was convicted of. I've been told that it must have been serious, as Parkhurst was a maximum security prison. He was living in Edmonton at the time of the previous census, and his family were still at the same address in 1911, so presumably that is where he was arrested. I've checked the Old Bailey Online records, but can't find him there. I'm not sure where else to look.

The second one is his son, also John Whitley. This one is based on pure speculation. My problem with him is I know the crime and when and where is was convicted, but without access to the records, to check DOB etc, I can't tell if it's him! He was convicted of burglary at the 19 Oct 1900 Middlesex Quarter Sessions. Would these records contain biographical information about him and where would they be held?

Any help gratefully received,
Michelle in Australia

Travelling People / LUCAS / COSTER / BOSWELL / BROOKS
« on: Monday 02 March 09 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

My apologies for being part of my fishing expedition! I've got one branch of my family which might possibly have Romani or Traveller connections. It's a bit convoluted but stick with me. Basically, I'm hoping people might be able to tell me if any of the people mentioned are known to be Romani or Travellers families.

COSTER/LUCAS/WHITLEY

Firstly, I'm having trouble tracking down Sarah Ann COSTER (nee LUCAS).

Sarah Ann LUCAS was born about 1853 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. However, each census on which she appears has a different birthplace (1861 -Birmingham, 1871 - Newbold, Warwickshire, 1881 - not located yet, 1891 - Bretby Estate, Derbyshire and 1901, Cornwall). For most of these census' she is Hertfordshire.

On 2 April, 1871 I believe that Sarah Ann is resident in the Union Lane Workhouse, Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire, England. Listed with her is a 1 month old called Charles LUCAS. She is unmarried, a pauper whose previous profession is listed as General Domestic Servant. At this time, her parents and siblings are listed as living at East Barnet. This proximity leads me to believe that I've got the right Sarah Ann LUCAS.

Her father was Anthony LUCAS b 1822 Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, England, married Hannah LINES b 1825
Newbold Upon Stour, Warwickshire, England. Anthony was a road labourer.

On 20 Jul 1873, in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England, she married Henry COSTER and had three children, George Henry COSTER, Alfred John COSTER and James COSTER. Their first son was born in New Barnet, but the last two were born in Southgate, London, indicating that the family had moved during this period. In Sep 1877 Henry COSTER died.

I've been unable to find Sarah Ann LUCAS on the 1881 census. However, I have found a Charles COSTA (10 yrs), George COSTA (6 yrs) and Alfred COSTA (4 yrs) who are resident in the Edmonton Union School. All of this would seem to indicate that Sarah and her young family fell on hard times after the death of Henry and that the children were placed in the Union School while Sarah and her youngest son resided somewhere else, possibly her working in service somewhere.

In 1891 and 1901 she is living in Edmonton with her new Husband, John WHITLEY (marine store dealer).

BOSWELL/BROOKS/RANN
The other families I'm interested in are  Stephen BOSWELL b abt 1824 Ware, Hertfordshire, England d 1874 Edmonton, London, Middlesex, England. He married  Sarah BROOKS b abt 1824 Ware, Hertfordshire, England d 1875 Edmonton, London, Middlesex, England

His daughter, Emily (b 1855 in Edmonton, Middlesex) married George RANN in 1874 in Cripplegate.

Sorry some of the details are a bit vague!

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Michelle
