Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Bridwell Prison??
« on: Monday 06 October 08 01:43 BST (UK)  »
I found out that one of my ancestors, in about 1821, was sent to Bridwell, Devon for "having a bastard child sworn against him", he was there for 3 - 4 days until his Master bailed him out.
Was Bridwell a prison or just somewhere they put people to deal with illegitimate births?
Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / What is a base child

Hello,
I have received a copy of an ancestors baptism record today - it states that he is his mothers base child, does anyone know what that means? Is it because he was a first child or maybe because he was illegitimate.
Thank you

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 look up please
« on: Saturday 04 October 08 17:35 BST (UK)  »
the only George Wild I can find in the 1851 census born around the right time is

George Wild age 23 a pauper in the Workhouse in St George in the East in Middlesex. It states that he is unmarried and I think his profession before he hit hard times is mariner but I can't be sure.

the census details are
HO 107 1549 page 35.

The only birth record I could find for a Emma Wild in Middlesex is for the quarter of Jan 1850 in Marylebone volume 1 page 244.
You could order the birth cert to be sure, are you sure she was not Sarahs child before she married?

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Edward MUDGE North Bovey c.1801

Just thought you would like to know Edward Endacott Mudge is definitely the man you are after.
I am a descendant of edward and Susannahs daughter Mary Ann Doney Mudge.
Edward Endacott was born  Sept 10 1799 in Chagford, he was the illegitimate Son of Thomazine Mudge and William Endacott,
I have a copy of the Bastard Court hearing (their words not mine) on Nov 03 1800 in Chagford. I think William Endacott was born in 1766 in Chagford but have not confirmed that yet. No other details on Thomazine as yet.
Edward was baptised on Oct 06 1799 in Chagford. From what I can work out he was brought up in the poor house in Chagford where William and Thomazine both had to pay weekly amounts towards his up keep. He was apprenticed out to Alexander Holmes (a local farmer in Chagford) until he was 21.
He then worked in North Bovey for a John Coldridge for a few years from about 1820, during that time he himself was placed in Bridwell prison for getting a girl pregnant, his master John Coldridge had to bail him out, I have no details on that child.
He married Susannah Bolt (her maiden name was Doney, she was a widow and had previously been married to John Bolt), they married Oct 08 1826 in the parish church at Mortonhampstead.
During their married life he became ill at least 3 times and he, Susannah and their children were removed from the places they lived and placed in the poor house in North Bovey. In 1845 Edward, Susannah, John, George and Susan were all in the Union Workhouse in Okehampton, Devon. I also have the census of 1851 when Edward was in Newton Abbot Workhouse, but Susannah and some of their children were living in Exeter, Devon. Edward died in 1863 in Newton Abbot and Susannah died 1874 in Exeter, Devon.
Hope this was helpful, I know your ancestor George married Ellen Bennellick who was actually my Great Grandfather (George Henry Bennellicks Sister)!!! George Henry Bennellick married Mary Jane Carnell, she was Mary Ann Doney Mudge and William Carnells Daughter. If you need any more help please let me know, the info I have on the Bennellicks is quite extensive.

hello peter
The marriage info - I found the marriage on freebmd.org.uk - it has the marriage dated in the quarter of Dec 1874 (Dec, Jan or Feb), the only way to be really sure is to order the certificate - the details are Dec 1874 in the district of Rochford index number 4a 381.

I moved to Wiltshire from Devon and found my bosses wife liked to do her family tree as well as me.  It turns out we were both born in the same hospital in the same year and throughout the 1841 - 1901 census we both had a member of family living in the same street. We even had family living in the same area in Suffolk!! It really is a very small world.
